Weeklybeats was meant to get me dedicating more of my time to making music every week and yet I think the skill I am practicing is quickly recording *something* at more and more of the last minute.

So it goes.

I was way too ambitious this week and ran into big walls with several tracks which are gonna take more time to hash out. It was a little humbling frankly discouraging so I went back to my trusty minifreak and made something pensive and somber.

It's a generative patch that has a bass oscillator that stays put for a nice drone and a lead oscillator that's tuned to a min 9 scale and it's pitch is dictated by a random LFO that resets after every note. There's a lot more going on there then just that, but it's the jist.

That generative patch is then accompanied by a vocal patch adding some somber chants and a violin patch matching that vocal cadence at different intervals. Oh and noise for fire crackles. All done on the minifreak and Ableton.

It came out very pensive with a hint of a silent honor being given and it became the Funeral of Saint Drusus to continue with my 40k theming.

If I can figure out a way to post my minifreak patches I'll start doing that, same with my M8 bundles.

I'm Rob, a solo musician living in Montreal. I've only been dipping into music since the start of the pandemic, however I've always dreamed of it, just never thought I was special enough to do something like that. I picked up guitar, and with my brothers help and encouragement learned sequencers and synthesis. He encouraged me to join him in 2024 in attempting weekly beats and it was a life changing event. I had gone from taking months to finish a single recording to hammering out work better than I had ever made in under a week. My goal for this year is not just to make music every week, but to become a part of such a wonderfully encouraging community and tackle my Olympic level imposter syndrome.

Some spacey octave/reverbed guitar noodles for this week. Around 1:50 I missed the chord I was aiming for :lol: Nice to have an outlet for something lower-stakes and less planned. That said, hoping to find time for more layered/composed tracks soon.

I got a late start on this one because earlier in the week, I was trying to figure out the name of a song and ended up trying to recreate it enough that either my wife or Google music search could figure out it. (Sadly, neither of them has yet, my mind is still a bit preoccupied with trying to figure that out.)

So ultimately, I kinda threw this together at the last moment and it ended up being a bit of a mess with both SID style instruments and FX synth. I was able to accomplish some of what I've learned this year with varying energy levels in different sections of the song, so I am happy about that. I feel like I could have done a lot better with this, making it longer with a couple more variations on the existing sectinos, but just didn't give myself enough time to tweak it.

Also, I often think of lyrics just to figure out the timing of my melodies and, while listening to this just before posting, the same lyrics came to my mind that I've used before, so I think maybe I reused the same melody again. I don't have time to figure it out or fix it though, so I'm just posting what I've got.

Quick track that I rushed to completion this week. I made a basic beat on Monday.. then didn't really touch anything until Sunday morning. Kinda loud, kinda a mess like previous tracks, but got something completed for week five. Almost all sounds come from the M8, plus some glitched vocal samples and some minor edits in Reaper.

Even though this was a quick one, all feedback is appreciated!

This week was pretty busy, but I mostly wanted to try to mimic some oneohtrix point never styled pads before taking his course this month. I like where this one went, I think I'd add another synth or something into the mix with more time.
