  • Episode 138 – When You Wake Up a Black Man – Charles Fai and Shannon May – Part 1
A timely discussion I am so grateful for the opportunity to have.
Charles Fai grew up in Cameroon, West Africa. Shannon May was born and raised in Minnesota. They met during her trip to Cameroon.  They call Duluth home, where they both have businesses and raise their 3 children.
Charles works as a mental health therapist, soccer (football) fan and coach. He is a trainer of the Duluth Police Department on Implicit Bias and working with people who experience mental illness.
Shannon is a Naturopathic Doctor with her practice in Duluth.
Many things have stuck in my head after recording this conversation. One of them is this… His daily mantra to himself when he wakes up in the morning. The first thing on his mind. Then, listen to his story that follows… the story that built that mantra… that prayer.
Shannon shares her experience of living in Cameroon where
she was the first white person some had ever seen.
Raising children… creating for them a home… a place for bliss and peace – And then preparing them for the world and how the color of their skin can change perceptions. She makes a great point…. we can accept kids…. but something shifts as they get older… especially boys.
How do we start to make REAL and MEANINGFUL changes? That thread is woven through our conversation.
Charles challenges us to think about our words, our division of community. Is it a problem for the “black communities” to figure out? The danger of thinking “communities of color” are separate from the community, the town, the city.
Who has the power to make change?
Charles gives us a great way to think about advantages. The Super Bowl… our team and race. Where do we… all of us.. have advantages? How do we honor those advantages and also recognize that we have them?
What does it mean to go from Sympathizer to Ally?
Food for thought… Do our businesses reflect our population? Seeing diversity as an asset not a liability What are business owners doing to attract people of color to their business as employers? How can we create opportunities for people of color to be heard… (Beyond the protests.)
Little changes can add up to big changes… if we invest ourselves a little.
How do we start those changes that need to come from within ourselves and inside our communities?
Please join us for part two as we dive deeper into this conversation.Charles shares his experiences. Some are intense… and some are all too consistent.
When you are a black man pulled over by the police. Being pulled over when you are the only sober person in your group leaving the bar… multiple times.Getting through the stress, the fear, the frustration… being held at gun point to make sure he made it home to see his wife and unborn child… for having done nothing wrong.
We talk about the concept of being “colorblind”
We, of course, continue the conversation of how we make the world a more equitable place.

  • Episode 135 – Adeline Wright – Small Business Challenges as MN Opens Up
In Minnesota, on June 1st, many businesses are able to reopen during the Covid-19 Quarantine, Safe at Home plan.
Hair salon, restaurants, etc.  – but not without plans in place to keep the employees and customers safe.
Adeline Wright joined us in March as Covid first “began” and called us to action. We check back in on her as she prepares, with many changes in operation, for her hair salon to open back up.
What are the steps Adeline is taking to keep her, her staff
    and her customers safe?
Lightening the customer load… and by nature – the salon
income, that comes along with the extra work, extra cleaning and limited
    clients allowed in her shop.
Her truth echoes many other’s with concerns about how to
financially operate at less than 50% of usual business. How will this effect
    small business in communities?
Not to mention the tension in what feels, at times, to be a harsh divide of folks who take the concern of the virus seriously and, others who actively operate against those trying to follow guidelines to stay safe.
Adeline is thinking about the client experience… her plans to keep customer’s down time engaging and fun as she holds awareness that limiting conversation is a measure of safety.
    …Operating in “The NOW normal”
We are all trying to figure this out!

Dr. Mary Louder is a physician in practice for 27 years in family medicine, Osteopathy and Integrative Medicine Holistic Certified.
Mary shares her unique perspective and her story of being very ill and hospitalized with what turned out to be Covid-19.  After a year that included losing both of her parents separately and after Covid, she watched her medical practice “evaporate” as her patients were mostly immunocompromised people who couldn’t come to the office.
Why it is so hard to get accurate information with this novel Corona virus. (There is a lot we don’t know… but many are not great with saying “We just don’t know.”)
What can we do as individuals to support our bodies. Mary shares various things we can do and consume to support our body, our cells and every-body.  Checking our stress. Also taking care of our allergies and mucus membranes.
Hope…We have an “opportunity to observe, adjust and change” as light is shown on systems that are not serving us well. Hope for the future!
    We touch on various other
treatments … light, oxygen, ozone, vitamin C… that we don’t hear too much
    about.
Suggestions to help us prepare and advocate for ourselves and the treatments we want or do not want.

  • Episode 131 – Grounding in These Interesting Times with Judge Shaun Floerke
Shaun has been doing “the judge work” for over 15 years. He has specialized in working with people who have substance abuse disorders and struggling with mental health trauma.
A thoughtful calming voice emerging through the noise.
    What did we chat about?
This current experience – how is it shifting our thoughts and leveling the playing field. As we each are having a version of a similar experience all over the world.
How do we ground ourselves and be present? What do we have agency over?  Where can we put our energies?
What will come out of this? How will we shift??  We are being faced with the ability to examine our habits, our path… individually? Our community?  Beyond? This purposeful collective work and mindset…
What does community service mean in this current situation?
Being informed without letting our amygdala hijack our brain. Think about how we consume media.  Finding the balance.LOOK OUT FOR THE HELPERSA group effort with Jon Reznick with the Rambler Food Truck and Shannon Cornelius of Yellow Bike, Brianna and more coming together to support health care workers with food and coffee to keep them going physically and mentally.
Nature It keeps its rhythm as ours drastically shifts.   Noticing nature and being in nature helps us re-attune to nature… to our own rhythm.
Releasing low level non violent offenders from jail in efforts to protect our fellow community members, and those that work in them, from the “Petri dish”? Judy’s words not Shaun’s… of jails during Covid.
We are a country with 5% of the worlds population.  We have 25% of the worlds incarcerated population.   (A fact that always is staggering to me, Judy… so many more questions than answers….)We want folks… these, our brothers and sisters in our community… to come back to society better than they left it.  Is our current system allowing for that outcome?
What is the reality of the new community and how do we find connection?
“Stay safe, Stay strong and Be in the fight…”  Even if it is a tiny way of participation with gratitude or sharing beauty.
“Be present” and “Live out loud!”
    QUOTES
“When we are no longer able to change a situation – we are challenged to change ourselves.” – Viktor E. Frankl
“I’m convinced of this: Good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they’re stones that don’t matter. As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late to do some good.” – Maya Angelou

  • Episode 130 – Liquor Stores – Why They Are Open and Essential During Quarantine – Dr. Michele Perron
Why are the liquor stores open?   A question I saw pop up in various places
    with varying answers.
I invited Dr. Michele Perron, a clinical supervisor with Lionrock Recovery, back to give us the answer. Lionrockrecovery.com is a 100% online recovery treatment to support folks in need. (She also is a TSM coach with CThreeFoundation.org using the Sinclair Method). If you know someone who needs assistance at this time, please pass this on.
    WHAT DID WE TALK ABOUT?
Things you might need to know for a loved one or yourself about alcohol consumption and trying to quit during this period of quarantine.
Why are liquor stores seen as essential and open during this time of quarantine?
How much alcohol does it take to have our body start to get dependent on the alcohol What happens if we just stop? What does withdraw look like when someone is drinking daily or binge drinking?
Alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures and can be fatal.   It is estimated that, if liquor stores were closed eliminating access to alcohol that 15% of Americans could need emergency medical attention due to withdrawal. (Taking away hospital space and staff from potential Covid patients.)
If you are afraid they might shut down liquor stores but you
feel you are drinking too much. How do you safely start bringing the daily
    drinks down safely?
If you ARE at a place where you don’t have work and other daily stresses to deal with and this IS a good time to quite or cut down your alcohol consumption and you want to make a change, Michele and Lionrock’s model is an experienced online recovery program model.
Alcohol damages DNA and interrupts immune function. Something to be aware of, especially if you are choosing to drink heavily. You may be adding to your risk of not being able to fight the virus as well.
Steps to take if you are alone and want to quit drinking
    during this time.

    ABOUT?
When we look at bottles of cleaner in our cabinets or even advertisements we see words like disinfect, sanitize, etc. What do they ACTUALLY mean?   Something many of us haven’t really had to think about. We may even use these terms interchangeably without knowing that they actually have very particular definitions, and proper use instructions, giving us clear expectations of what they accomplish.
Defining terms… Clean Deep clean Sanitation Disinfection
The importance of following directions and taking EPA warnings seriously on cleaning products.
    Product contact time
Some suggestions on getting outside help when needing to
disinfect or reset a home, work place or other space.
The benefits of a dry fog hydrogen peroxide solution.
