  • Episode 78 – Marcy Kernez – Eagles Nest Massage Therapy

Marcy talks about the long history of massage as a health practice.  How it evolved in the U.S. and in Duluth, MN. Then she shares her history of massage and her 30 years in her business at Eagles Nest Massage.

We learn what sets the experience of Eagles Nest Massage

business model apart from many other massage therapy businesses and larger
    corporate chains.

Recently in Duluth we had an incident of a massage establishment being used as a front for sex trafficking. Marcy talks some about the city’s proposed changes around licensure, etc.   And, how, if you are new to massage, this is something you do not have to fear running into as it is very much the unusual exception.

The etymology of the titles for massage therapists and how

it has changed over time.  Spoiler alert…
“massage parlor” is on the outdated, possibly even offensive, list for massage
    therapists.

    And much more!

  • Episode 71 – Farm to Patient Program at NorthLakes Community Clinic – Sarah Tarkington and Lesley Burg

I LOVE to see this!  A direct action

that exemplifies preventative care as well as whole person minded care.

Sarah Tarkington  – Wellness Manager for NorthLakes Community Clinics and Lesley Burg – mental health therapist at NorthLakes share about the Farm to Patient program at the clinics.

Sarah shares how this program gives patient’s access to local farm fresh

food, information and support on how to use and maximize their shares. They
have been creative in figuring out HOW to help people have access directly, but
then to also look to having a greater ripple effect in the community beyond
    those folks in the program.

Lesley talks about the many ways she sees the program feeding and improving people’s mental well being on many levels that we don’t often address: social aspects, self efficacy, improving depression and anxiety, etc.

    Their Vision  – Healthy prosperous

    engaged communities where everyone thrives.

What a great concept! They are taking action to help support and shift what is around them well beyond the clinic walls.

Scattered in our conversation you’ll find some great ideas and reminders for ourselves to encourage us to eat well… “well” meaning more than just the food we consume… and who doesn’t need THAT occasionally, right?

  • Episode 69 – Wendy Quarrington – Good Food Bank coordinator in Ontario Canada

Wendy and her crew of the Good Food Bank at the Table Community Food Centre in Perth, Ontario, Canada not only feed hungry people in their region with healthier food options and health awareness leading to life style change – The work they do has a health positive effect on those they serve and, impressively, reaches out into the community in a pretty big and multifaceted way!

Wendy talks about how this has come about… some intentional,

    some by happy accident.

It is fun and really impressive.

We talk about her perspective on the challenges of living in poverty, and discuss inspiring “lenses” we might look through when giving to our local food shelves in food, funds or our time.

Since the first conversation I had with Wendy while doing some research for a class project in college, not only was I inspired and wanted to have a go at some of these ideas where I live, but I also wanted to help share the ideas out into the world for others to be inspired and take any nugget that they could… be they a worker at a food bank or simply a community member.  The podcast was still in zygote form… but HERE WE ARE!  It has come to fruition! (Ya, I know… my community health geeky enthusiasm is showing!)
