On this episode I am proud to have Jim Meacham a lifelong friend, world traveler, cartographer, and until recently head of the Info Graphics lab at the University of Oregon. We talk about Yellowstone, Mongolia, Ungulates, and some of the achievements of his former students.

Jim recently retired as executive director and co-founder of the UO's InfoGraphics Lab. He also is a senior research associate in the Department of Geography. He is a former president of the North American Cartographic Information Society. His interests include map and atlas design and data visualization. Jim taught map design in the UO Geography Department. He is a co-author on the Wild Migrations: Atlas of Wyoming's Ungulates (2018), Atlas of Yellowstone (2012), the Archaeology and Landscape in the Mongolian Altai: An Atlas (2010) and the Atlas of Oregon (2001) publications. His current projects include a revision of the second edition of the Atlas of Yellowstone. These atlas publications have received several major awards from the American Association of Geographers, the Cartography and Geographic Information Society, the Association of American Publishers, and the Wildlife Society among others.

The area in Africa I am trying to think of on the podcast is the Masai Mara.

Suzanne Munson joins me on the podcast today to talk about her latest book The Metaphysical Thomas Jefferson. A unique and interesting way of finding out what's in the mind of one of the most well known historic figures.

PREMISE: IF YOU COULD TALK WITH THOMAS JEFFERSON, WHAT QUESTIONS WOULD YOU ASK?

Eight Jefferson authorities devised questions, thinking they were participating in a "history class project." Instead, they became part of an amazing adventure: a journey to the immortal mind of Mr. Jefferson himself, facilitated by an experienced medium.

From his place in spirit, Jefferson is not happy with the evolution of America's government and culture since the days of the Founding Fathers. America's government has lost its footing and is in need of a new revolution--not of war, but of integrity, he observes.

The Metaphysical Thomas Jefferson records his views on Congress, the presidency, foreign policy, higher education, the military, religion, the media, slavery, race, and Sally Hemings. On government, Jefferson is discouraged by generations of "corruption, self-dealing, conformity, and confusion" in Washington. He is especially concerned about a gradual, insidious loss of freedom in the country.

The book concludes with Jefferson's call to action to the next generation of leaders: to form "Circles of Integrity," large enough to realize crucial reforms. He calls for a restructuring of all major American institutions.

Bio:

Suzanne Munson is a lover of history and author of books about America's Founding Fathers. She has just published The Metaphysical Thomas Jefferson and previously wrote a biography about Jefferson's mentor, George Wythe, titled Jefferson's Godfather: The Man Behind the Man.

She lectures on the legacy of these two Founding Fathers at the college level and at various other venues. Following a career in corporate and non-profit communications, she turned her attention to writing and teaching. Her interest in history began as a child, hearing of the trials of her ancestors in 17th century Jamestown-area settlements and the exploits of her pioneer forebears a century later on Virginia's westernmost frontier.

On the show today I have the pleasure of talking to Evan Stern host of Vanishing Postcards a new podcast now available everywhere. We talk about how he got into podcasting, making a narrative or documentary style podcast, and all the things that he had to learn to produce the podcast.

A native of Austin, TX, I caught the performing bug at age 11 with a second prize win in the famed O Henry Pun-Off. After studies at Sarah Lawrence and the British American Drama Academy, I moved to NYC to pursue a career in performance where I had the honor of appearing as a soloist at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center among many distinguished venues.

Following a lifelong passion for raconteurship, and budding interest in audio storytelling, I grabbed a microphone and returned home to Texas in January of 2020 to try my hand at collecting oral histories. This project evolved into Vanishing Postcards, a documentary travelogue in which listeners are invited to join me on a road trip exploring the hidden dives, traditions and frequently threatened histories discovered by exiting the interstates. Featuring humorous, often touching dispatches from the backroads, within one week of its launch the show was named one of the Best Podcasts of 2021 by Digital Trends.

Dr. Stalker strongly believes that the most effective way of imparting one's knowledge to others is by showing to the rest of the world how that knowledge has helped you become a better individual.
