Ipswich’s Limelight Cinemas was buzzing with excitement this past weekend as the highly anticipated Moana 2 graced the big screen. The animated blockbuster drew record crowds, with the newly refurbished XD cinema – featuring recliners and daybeds – opening just in time for the film’s debut.
“We put tickets on sale just an hour before the session, and nearly 100 people attended our first screening. The atmosphere was electric,” said Lex, Limelight Cinemas spokesperson. The movie’s success cements its place among animated classics like Shrek 2 and Incredibles 2.
The weekend also showcased Limelight’s renovations, with upgraded seating and state-of-the-art laser projection enhancing the cinematic experience. The full refurbishment is set to be completed just before Christmas, promising an even better movie-going experience for Ipswich locals.
For fans of holiday traditions, Limelight is bringing Christmas cheer with André Rieu’s Winter Wonderland. The concert film features festive classics performed under dazzling chandeliers and candelabras, offering audiences a magical seasonal escape.
Limelight’s popular Christmas classics series continues with Die Hard this weekend, followed by How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Love Actually, and Home Alone. “These films are part of the festive spirit, and it’s wonderful to see families coming together to enjoy them,” Lex added.
For those seeking something dramatic, advanced screenings of Conclave begin Sunday. The film, starring Ralph Fiennes, takes audiences inside the Vatican’s political intrigue as Cardinals gather to elect a new Pope.
Limelight’s gold-class experience, featuring $15 kids’ tickets for Moana, adds a touch of luxury to the holiday season.

Ipswich City Council has endorsed a new citywide IGO Parking Action Plan to address growing parking demands over the next decade. The initiative replaces a 13-year-old strategy and focuses on key areas like the Ipswich CBD and Springfield Central.
“We’ve worked extensively with the community to understand their needs,” Mayor Teresa Harding said. The plan incorporates accessible parking, electric vehicle charging stations, bicycle parking, and loading zones, aiming for a more organized and inclusive approach to parking.
In other council updates, Ipswich’s Active Kids program has seen a 218% rise in participation this year. Over 5,000 children have engaged in sports and activities, up from 1,600 last year. Mayor Harding praised the initiative, saying, “It’s wonderful to see so many kids trying out different sports before committing to fees and equipment.”
The council has also renewed its partnership with the Greater Springfield and Ipswich Region Chambers of Commerce. This collaboration will provide funding for local business initiatives, networking events, and job expos, ensuring continued support for Ipswich’s economic growth. “Local businesses are the backbone of our community,” Mayor Harding said.
As the festive season kicks off, Mayor Harding joined the community last week to light the City’s Christmas Tree in the Nicholas Street Precinct. With carol events and community celebrations across Ipswich, the mayor highlighted the unity brought by the season.
In a show of civic pride, Ipswich welcomed 299 new Australian citizens from 43 countries during a citizenship ceremony on Monday. “It’s an honor to welcome so many new Australians to our city,” said Mayor Harding.
Residents can explore the IGO Parking Plan and updates on flood recovery efforts on the council’s website.

With the 2024 Melbourne Cup just days away, racing experts Rowan Anderson and Jason Lawson from West Bremer Radio share their top predictions for the “race that stops the nation.” Both tipsters offer insights on standout horses, as well as a few surprise contenders to watch.
Jason’s top choice for the Melbourne Cup remains Vauban, a horse he has been backing since August. “Vauban comes in as the current favourite at $6. His performance in Europe is strong, and he’s expected to handle the distance. The quality of the field this year isn’t as strong as previous years, so he’s definitely a top-two or top-three chance,” Lawson said.
Lawson also suggests Buckaroo, currently paying $6.50, as a strong contender, but notes it will need a solid strategy from jockey Joao Moreira due to its wide barrier draw of 21. Another top pick is Warp Speed ($26), a Japanese horse with proven stamina in two-mile races, which he describes as an “excellent each-way bet.”
Rowan, meanwhile, has thrown his support behind Absurd ($9), a winner in last year’s Ebor Handicap and seventh in last years Melbourne Cup, known for its stamina and consistency. Anderson’s top trifecta selections are Vauban, Absurd, Sea King, and Akita Sushi, with a surprise choice of The Map ($51), which he describes as “one to watch,” hoping jockey Rachel King could bring a Melbourne Cup victory.
The experts will also be keeping a close eye on the Big Dance at Randwick, a lesser-known but highly competitive race featuring regional winners. Gringotts from the Ciaron Maher stable is currently the favourite.
As Melbourne Cup Day approaches, both experts remind punters to gamble responsibly and enjoy the thrilling atmosphere. The Melbourne Cup will take place on Tuesday, November 5, at Flemington Racecourse.

Jennifer Howard has reclaimed her seat as the State MP for Ipswich, securing another term to champion projects vital to the city’s booming growth. Speaking on West Bremer Radio, Howard expressed her gratitude to Ipswich residents, saying, “It’s such an honour to be re-elected. I love representing this community, and I’m very, very humbled.”
Howard acknowledged the challenges of working with a new coalition government but pledged her commitment to continue advocating for Ipswich. Key projects on her agenda include the Ipswich Tennis Association court upgrades, valued at $780,000, and a new $5 million synthetic athletics track, a commitment she made in collaboration with the University of Southern Queensland. Although the coalition did not match this pledge, Howard emphasized its importance, especially with the Olympics approaching and Ipswich athletes like Gout Gout competing on a global scale.
Howard also discussed securing a $4 million commitment from the LNP for a business case on a second river crossing, a critical infrastructure project given Ipswich’s projected population growth. “In the next 10 years, Ipswich’s population is expected to reach half a million,” Howard said, stressing that infrastructure must evolve alongside the city’s rapid development.
In addition, ongoing projects from Howard’s previous term, including three new schools, an ambulance station, a police station, and a billion-dollar hospital upgrade, remain on track. “There’s no shortage of work to be done, and I’m excited to keep moving forward,” Howard noted.
Howard commended her campaign opponents, praising their respectful approach throughout the election, and expressed deep gratitude for her staff and volunteers who supported her re-election bid. With her calendar filling up fast, Howard is ready to serve Ipswich in the coming term, promising, “It’s all systems go.”
