Children's Moment 7/17/2016

The story of the Good Samaritan is among the most familiar of Biblical stories. Jesus told the story in response to a lawyer's inquiry, "Who is my neighbor?" In modern parlance the question becomes, "Whose lives matter?" It turns out that the parable indicates the life that matters is of anyone who needs our mercy.

Children's Moment 7/10/2016

Jesus sends out seventy (or maybe seventy-two) of his followers with the same message for those who receive them as for those who reject them: "The reign of God has come near you!" It signals a revolution that is quite revolutionary, and one that is not to come but has already arrived.

Jesus' disciples want to take revenge on a town that didn't receive him, but he refuses to let them. Then he lets them know how difficult it will be to follow him unless they give up their old ways of living, like that desire to take revenge.

This story from Luke is familiar to most of us, and in many ways it is dramatic and very frightening. It is an example of Jesus’ command of demons, but this power over them is in quite an unworldly way.
