In this familiar story Peter first refuses to let Jesus wash his feet. But Jesus is unrelenting, demonstrating that although we are called to help others, we are also called to receive help. It is through receiving help that we learn how to help.

Jesus calls us to abide in him and love as he loves. That loving part is his commandment. How do we follow what Jesus commands us to do is such a divisive culture?

Jesus says that he is the resurrection and the life, then provides proof by calling his friend Lazarus from the grave. We know that Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, were pleased with this, but what about Lazarus? Did anybody ask him?

Jesus understood the importance of taking care of one's body. We see that in the times when Jesus touches someone and heals them. But we also see it in the prominence that eating meals together takes in Jesus' life. We practice that, too, in our service of communion.
