Twenty-five years after 9/11, Nigel Hannaford asks whether the emergency ever really ended. From airport security and anti-terror laws to surveillance, frozen bank accounts and expanded digital powers, he looks at how governments kept many of the tools created in the aftermath of the attacks and whether Canadians gave up more freedom than they realized.

Natalie St. Hilaire and Randy Royer examine what they see as Canada’s growing democratic deficit, from the concentration of power in the Prime Minister’s Office to strict party discipline, judicial power and barriers between provinces. They trace many of these problems back to Pierre Trudeau’s 1982 Constitution and question whether Canada’s political structure still gives citizens and regions a meaningful voice. Royer says fixing the system may require something far bigger than another election: a new constitution built with direct public involvement.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is telling the Trump administration to “stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough” as tensions between Canada and the United States escalate. Carney says trade talks can resume when Washington gets serious about negotiating a deal that respects Canadian sovereignty and protects key Canadian industries.
The comments come after Canada-U.S. trade negotiations broke down, followed by new tariffs and a wave of provocative social media posts from President Donald Trump and other U.S. officials.

Attempts by activists to derail energy investment in Canada undermine an industry capable of delivering major economic and environmental benefits, says Shannon Joseph, chair of Energy for a Secure Future.
Joseph makes her comments tonight on Hannaford, arguing that campaigns attempting (for example) to portray liquefied natural gas projects as health hazards can obscure the tangible benefits energy development has delivered to communities.
This is particularly so of indigenous communities in northern British Columbia.

Natalie St. Hilaire and Randy Royer examine the flow of federal taxes and transfers out of Alberta and ask how much the current system is really costing Albertans. Royer estimates the total impact could reach as much as $45 billion a year through equalization, employment insurance, CPP contributions and federal taxing and spending.
They also look at how Pierre Trudeau’s 1982 Constitution shaped Canada’s transfer system, why Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. remain major contributors, and whether reforms to equalization, pensions, interprovincial trade and federal spending could leave more capital in the West. The discussion also explores whether Canada’s economic structure is holding Alberta back and what could be done to change it.

Nigel Hannaford speaks with Yaroslav Baran about the breakdown in Canada-U.S. trade talks, Donald Trump’s tariff strategy and whether Mark Carney can still deliver the deal Canadians were promised. Baran explains how Canada is targeting politically sensitive U.S. exports with retaliatory tariffs, why sectors like autos, steel and aluminum remain vulnerable, and why Alberta oil should not be sacrificed for a Team Canada strategy. He also argues Canada needs to diversify its trade, build more pipelines and reduce its dependence on the U.S., while warning that Carney could use the trade fight to justify even more federal borrowing.
