For 25 years, Somebody’s Place in Petersburg, has been feeding the needy. Deuteronomy, and later repeated by Jesus, we’re told, “There will always be poor people in the land… be openhanded toward those who are poor and needy…” The mission of “Somebody’s Place” continues. One of the many volunteers is a long time friend of mine, Fran Lewis… She is our guest today.

If you watched last week’s program with song-writer Kerry Kurt Phillips, we covered a lot of ground, but there’s even more to ground to cover. So we’ll be back with Part Two, discovering the stories behind the song right after this...

If you look at a playlist of the old WFPC during the 1990’s many of those songs were written by a songwriter with Pike County roots Kerry Kurt Phillips who penned many classics for the likes of George Jones Joe Diffie Tim McGraw George Strait Billy Ray Cyrus Vern Gosdin Tracy Byrd and so many others. Remember Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox? She Let Herself Go? Drinkin’ Bone Almost Home I Don’t Need You’re Rockin’ Chair Down On The Farm Pick Up Man…so many great anthems for rural life started out on a piece of paper under the heel of the palm of today’s guest. We’ll be right back with Kerry Kurt Phillips after this.

For as long as I’ve been around Pike County, we’ve had the Zoar Mosquito Festival in Lockhart Township, just east of Stendal. At the old WFPC I’d usually interview Jim or Ruth Carlisle who were very active in the organization of the festival. In 2026 two of their children, Beth Goeppner and Max Carlisle help carry on that tradition and they are here today to discuss this year's Zoar Mosquito Fest!

Our nation is celebrating the 250 birthday of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It’s been the greatest experiment in governance of country. The signers of that document, declaring their freedom from the King of England put their futures and lives, as well as those of their families in jeopardy. Pike County, and the surrounding area, celebrates that day for as long as I’ve been here in Otwell. The festivities are organized by the Otwell Ruritans. Here to tell us what’s going on for 2026 is their President, Andrew Houtsch.

There is a study by the Barna Group, that tells us the largest growing segment of the evangelical church in the United States is 18-30 year olds and largely male. Gen Z, they’re going to church. They're attending more than older adults! We have a non-denominational study group in Pike County that targets that population. It’s organized by an old friend of mine, Blake Henson and his wife Vee. We’re going to have a discussion about how Christ is working through “Branches of Hope."

Over the years Indiana State government district boundaries change. Most of Pike County is now in House District 75, which traditionally was a bit more southern. So today northern Pike, from the White River, and most of Pike County stretches down through Newburgh to Ohio River! But, we have a friend in that seat, Cindy Ledbetter, who is with us today to discuss what is going on with State Government and how it affects us.
