What is the outlook for someone with pancreatic cancer?

The location and stage of a cancer in the pancreas will help doctors decide treatment options, Upstate surgical oncologist Mashaal Dhir, MD, explains. Pancreatic cancer is often discovered only after it has advanced, he notes, and the most common type of pancreatic cancer is adenocarcinoma, which arises in the ducts of the pancreas. Symptoms may include jaundice -- a yellowing of the skin and eyes -- along with pain, loss of appetite and weight loss. Treatments may include surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation, and some patients may qualify for clinical trials involving immunotherapy.
