Burte Ujin Lkhagvasuren is a content creator based in America. She is a recent immigrant to America, with roots in Mongolia (born there) and grew up in Russia. Her content focuses on education in terms of embracing one’s natural beauty. She looks to show how Asian wavy hair and monolid eyes are beautiful and that Asian women and men should love that about themselves if they got that. Her big dream is to inspire others who have experienced similar life struggles and represent those who look like her. She wants to be their voice and face. 

In our conversation, we talked about her background (being Mongolian-Russian), her upbringing in Russia being Asian dealing with racism that she wasn’t aware was racism until she immigrated to America, her experience being an immigrant as an adult,  her thoughts on racism and her content creating journey (how she decided to become a creator and what’s her goal with creating content).

Just a little disclaimer before we get to the conversation that I had with Dr. Benjamin Cheung from UBC. Today’s episode is about the Hong Kong Protests that have been going on since 2019. The conversation goes into how both Benjamin and I see and feel about the Hong Kong Protests as we are both Diaspora Hong Kongers that immigrated to Canada before July 1, 1997.  We also talk about the characteristics of those in support of the government versus those in support of pro-democracy and self-determination for Hong Kong. Last, we offered our thoughts on how Hong Kong will end up in the future and Benjamin’s words of encouragement for Hong Kongers still in Hong Kong. 

This conversation might go over your head if you are not familiar with what’s happening in Hong Kong so I would suggest reading up before listening and for those that are somehow affected by the Protests, this might be something you choose to avoid if it’s too triggering. Also, if you are those that have your mindset on how “bad” pro-democracy people are, feel free to skip this episode as well. 

Last, I would like to offer two Hong Kong-based organizations that you can check out and support. They are organizations set up to help those in Hong Kong that are in need and have been greatly affected by the Protests and now the pandemic. They are the marginalised ethnic minorities and refugees living in Hong Kong that are often not taken care of by the government and society. Little Wanderers NYC is an animal rescue service rescuing/TNR’ing the neediest cats in the toughest areas of NYC- focus on the Bronx. It is a grassroots community that Elizabeth spent some time volunteering with.

Elizabeth Tsung is a super talented and successful violinist, pianist and composer. Elizabeth has played at Carnegie Hall, The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, Kaufman Music Center, The Riverside Church, The Church of St. Francis Xavier, Kerrytown Concert House, Hill Auditorium, The University of Michigan Museum of Art and more. Elizabeth is a Taiwanese American with immigrants from Taiwan and she grew up not feeling Asian American and it was only recently when she saw that she was indeed Asian American, making her feel like a lost Asian these days. 

In our conversation, we talked about her upbringing (family pressure, learning music, and more), her music career journey, the car accident that changed her life, and her experience living with mental health illness (borderline personality disorder)

Judy Jean Kwon, a Korean-American filmmaker/storyteller comes on the podcast to promote her latest project, MILFriend, a comedy series about crazy-ass MoMs in gentrifying Venice beach where culture, color and class CLash.

She shares her experience working on MILFriend, a project that she wrote, directed, produced, and starred in and her experience working in the entertainment industry being an Asian woman looking to not play stereotypical Asian roles. In addition to that, we talked about her experience of not feeling like she fit in being Korean American growing up in California raised by her grandmother and her thoughts on Asian representation in media as a whole.

Today we have Chara Kai-Le, singer-songwriter/producer based in Toronto, Canada. She recently released her song, Asian Enough that I came across that I relate to a lot. The song speaks to the feelings of many third culture kids on whether or not they are "Asian Enough" or should that even be a thing? 

In our conversation, we found out about Chara's background of moving around everywhere when she was a kid, living in England facing racism and culture shock that lead her to be quite pro-Asian and kind of Anti-White and how music was the thing that saved her when she was younger. Last but not least, we got into talking about Chara's creative journey and her road to being an independent singer-songwriter/producer trying to make it in Toronto while the world is going through the pandemic and all the social unrest. We definitely talked about her song, Asian Enough as well.

Chinese Adoptee. Physical Disability. Creative Asian. One that uses his voice for things that matter. That's how Daniel would describe himself as. And I feel that he's definitely using his voice for things that matter given what he does. 

So for those that does not know, Daniel is a Chinese adoptee from Beijing but was raised in America by a white family. He came into my radar when I joined Asian Creative Network, a Facebook group dedicated to Asians who dare to break the mold. The Asian Creative Network connects and empowers Asian creatives by providing an inclusive, global platform and resources for active community building, collaboration, and growth. Daniel is one of the moderators of the group and shows a lot of support to the creatives in the group (including myself) building a very safe and encouraging community. The group has over 47+k members right now! 

Our conversation focused on Daniel himself as is he usually more focused on sharing other people's stories and creative projects rather than talking about himself. He is also not that big on social media in his personal life so it's a bit strange how he moderates such a big online digital community for Asian creatives. 

Our conversation topics:

-His background and his Chinese adoptee experience especially with discussing race and the whole Anti-Asian Hate issue with his white family.

-How he became a moderator to such big Asian digital communities first with Subtle Asian Dating and now Asian Creative Network?

-What does moderating/building online digital communities mean?

Therese Neri is a first generation Asian American (Filipino) nurse living in Houston, Texas. She is also an artist and weeb on the side when she's not busy keeping patients alive at the hospital. The art that she does focus on the ethnic minority groups of Asia (check out her socials to see them!). 

In our conversation, we talked about her upbringing, her experience with racism in real life and online, her experience with self hate while she was growing up, her thoughts on Asian representation (don't forget Black and Brown Asian representation!), reconnecting with her roots, feeling more love in Asia than she does in America, the inter-community racism that goes on within the Asian Diaspora and her artwork. Jerry Ma is a New York based illustrator and graphic designer. Best known for his work as Art Director and contributing artist on the ground breaking comic graphic novels Secret Identities and Shattered, Jerry has also self published/kickstarted successfully his creator owned graphic novel Legend. Currently working on a line of graphic tees with the NBA in China, he also has his own line of graphic tees here in the States.

Jerry is on this episode to talk about his super exciting Kickstarter project, The Monkey King: A Chinatown Odyssey, a 64 page full colour graphic novel that features the Monkey King story (Classic Chinese literature) in modern day New York. This graphic novel will be a reimagining of the classic Chinese literature story, think Stranger Things meet Cowboy Bebop. This project is in support of AAPI Heritage Month and #StopAsianHate campaign. What that means is that by supporting this project and helping it reach its stretch goals, you can help Jerry and his team support small local Chinatown businesses in New York. Please!
