Benjamin Cheung is a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, teaching courses primarily on research methodology, social psychology, and cultural psychology. He came as a settler on unceded Musqueam territory from the former British colony of Hong Kong, and has been interested in acculturation and bicultural identity ever since. As an undergraduate student at UBC, he majored in Psychology (with an emphasis on cultural psychology), and Asian Language and Culture (with a specialization in Korean). He obtained his MA and Ph.D. at UBC, working on projects related to cultural adaptation. Understanding the intersection of cultural environment, cultural identity, and cultural experience has always been an interest of his. 

We are in for a treat today! We got Benjamin Cheung, super smart Ph.D on the podcast to talk about acculturation, bicultural identity, diaspora identity, and everything about being Asian in the West! He got a wealth of knowledge that will open your eyes on being diaspora or seeing things from the POV of a diaspora if you aren't diaspora. Super cool stuff! Background:

Roa of Roa's Podcast and I both got into KPOP during the second generation of KPOP (2008-2010 time period). She is still a fan of KPOP and follows it especially girl groups and BTS while I fell out of love with the genre in 2011. She is interested in the KPOP and Korean culture explosion in the West given that she is a Korean-Canadian herself. 

With the current popularity of BTS, Blackpink, Korean drama, and Korean culture as a whole in western media, we talked about how she feels about it and why she is happy and also worried at the same time in terms of this popularity. She also talked about how she does not care if any KPOP groups or musicians makes it in the West (We don't need white people to like KPOP). Last, she recommended some of her favourite KPOP groups and musicians that you can check out!

Preserving Your Heritage Language Being Diaspora 

Ewen is an Internet friend of mine that I hope to be able to meet one day (once Covid is over *fingers crossed*). The reason being, is that he is someone that I share a lot of similar experiences with and someone I relate a lot to. 

Ewen is a CBC (Canadian Born Chinese) of Cantonese background with parents being from Hong Kong that immigrated to Canada during the 80s/90s period. Ewen is a Diaspora Asian with a linguistic background and passion for Cantonese (his heritage language).

In our conversation, we talked about being CBC living in the area of Canada with a lot of Cantonese speakers and a lot about our diaspora feelings. We got into the discussion of preserving our heritage language (Cantonese) as Diaspora and what he plans to do with the Ontario Cantonese Heritage Language curriculum. Also, we touched on our motherland, Hong Kong, and all that is happening there (protest, social unrest, government issues, etc). To end it off, we talked about our favourite Hong Kong foods!

Suraj Kandukuri is a MBA student that will head into a corporate consulting career after graduation. You would think that this would be his "main" hustle. Well, you are wrong! He actually said that podcasting is the "main" hustle for him and his consulting career will be his "side" hustle. He's the producer and host of Brown People We Know Podcast, an interview podcast exploring the non-traditional paths and shared experiences of the South Asian American diaspora. Suraj's podcast and this podcast both look at interviewing Asians about their life and the shared experiences of Asians in the diaspora so it was very exciting to be able to talk to someone with a similar passion and goal in terms of podcasting. 

In the conversation, we touched on many things including the following (but not limited to):

-His identity as a Telugu American and the reason behind his choice in how he identities himself

-His family immigrant story going from Saudi Arabia to Canada and now finally in America

-His childhood and upbringing

-Racism and microaggressions that he dealt with living as an Asian American

My guest today is Emery Fung, a Hong Kong-born, native English and Cantonese speaker who has lived in the UK for over 10 years. His joy so far has been in working with people. His skills are in building a community, foresting relationships, business development, research and pitching. Outside of his professional life, he is a LGBT advocate, Social Media Junkie and Sports fanatic. He can be found playing football, hockey or wake-surfing across Hong Kong! Claire is a Taiwanese living and working in NYC right now. She is a journalist, photographer, and food blogger. She was born and raised in Taiwan, attending international/American school in Taiwan that formed her third culture/diaspora identity despite only living in the West during her university days and now as she is works in America.
