Thank you for listening and supporting this podcast. I wanted to use this episode to share some of my reflections for the year and also to give thanks to those that really made a difference in my podcasting journey so far. Hope everyone listening will have a great 2021 and can be able to accomplish whatever they want to accomplish. For me, I'm just going to keep doing this and hope this will the audience that will find it of value. Even if it doesn't reach to lots of people, I am still going to do it as I enjoy having conversations with people about being Asian. Thanks again and more content in 2021 (I promise).

EP 16 UNDERSTANDING HMONG PEOPLE AND CULTURE

GUEST: RENEE YA (HMONG AMERICAN) (@reneecya)

Renee Ya is Hmong American and grew up in Fresno, CA. With over 16 years of experience in the technology and video game industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. Co-founder of Tiger Byte Studios, a full-service technology company actualizing products and games. A Product Manager by trade and mother to the next feisty generation of women warriors. She is also heavily involved in the preservation and promotion of Hmong culture in America through the Celebrate Hmong art and music festival that she is involved in.

In today’s episode, Renee shared her knowledge of the Hmong culture/people/history along with her reasons why she is so passionate about knowing and understanding her culture. We also talked about her career in the gaming industry and her thoughts on the gaming industry. Last, she talked about what she does to preserve her culture and also a lot of interesting stats and facts that you didn’t know about Hmong people in America.

EP 15 PRESERVING FAMILY LEGACY ONE RECIPE AT A TIME Randy Lau (@MADEWITHLAU) - CHINESE AMERICAN 

Randy is a Chinese American (SF Native) that is UCLA educated with an Engineering background that ended up working with many different start-ups. He started Made With Lau YouTube channel in September of 2020 and has over 10000+ subscribers and over 100000+ views. The channel focuses on showcasing Chinese food recipes of Randy’s dad who had been a chef for over 50 years. The videos are filmed, edited, produced by Randy himself with his Dad being the main person doing the cooking and explaining of the recipe and food, his mom being there for additional commentary, and his wife and his baby son joining the whole family at the end for a family conversation and to eat the food that was made during the video together. In this episode, Randy and I talked about his upbringing, his journey as a Chinese American, his relationship with his family, how he plans to raise his son in America given his Diaspora Asian identity, his journey so far with the channel, his plans for the channel, and his favorite dishes that they have made on the channel so far. Last, we talked about why he started the channel in the first place and what are the biggest things he has gotten from doing this channel and also from reconnecting with his family on a deeper level through doing this and also further conversations with them now that Randy also has a young son as well. In today’s episode, I got Al, a Korean-American world adventure traveler with his own Youtube channel, Travel Like Water showcasing his travel nomad lifestyle as he has travelled to over 30+ countries in his time.

We talked about his Korean-American upbringing growing up in America, his journey to becoming a professional basketball player in Korea that ended up taking him into teaching/coaching basketball in China. Through that, he became a frequent traveler to different countries leading him to becoming a travel nomad. We talked about what he got out of travelling and his views on Asian representation and the reasons why he has his Youtube channel. Aaron is a Hong Kong Chinese Canadian CPA accountant that is also the founder/host of First Generations Podcast. First Generations Podcast share stories and lessons of people that paved their own path to success! It's a successful podcast with over 6000 followers on Instagram! 

He was such a joy to talk to as he was giving off such positive energy and vibe during the whole episode. He also shows great gratitude to what he has and he believes in living well means to serve well. I believe it is all that which has made him so successful in what he does. 

In this episode, we talked about growing up in Canada as a Chinese Born Canadian (CBC) and feeling like a black sheep/a banana. He also has a martial arts background and we got into it and talked about his martial art lessons. We talked about being Diaspora Asian and the question of where is home when you are Diaspora Asian (my favorite thing to talk about). Last, We talked about his podcast, why he is doing his podcast, what he has learned, the power of networking and his self-help/motivation/positive mindset. Ep 12 TINA - CONSULTANT/DANCER/YOUTUBER/CREATOR - CHINESE-AUSTRALIAN (@ttinaat)

Tina is a Chinese-Australian that immigrated to Australia with her parents when she was 8. She is a consultant full time and a content creator (Youtube) on the side as a hobby.

In today’s episode, I talked to Tina about her passion topic, our relationships to our parents as children of Asian poc immigrants. We specifically talked about how Diaspora Asians can have a better relationship with their immigrant parents? For context, Tina feels that she has a pretty good relationship with her parents and would love to share her thoughts on how to do so and help others that are trying to improve their relationships with their own parents.

Is it through listening and doing everything they tell you to do? Is it to try to explain your side of the story to them in the best way possible? OR, is it just to treat your parents like regular human beings that had lives before kids and try to understand where they are coming from? Listen and you will find out!

We also talked about Tina’s creative pursuits with dancing and also now creating content on Youtube. She is an aspiring lifestyle Youtuber trying to make all sorts of different content and learning the craft. It is very cool, you should definitely check her out and subscribe to her channel!

EP 11 JULIE - ARTIST, PAINTER, PHOTOGRAPHER  - CAMBODIAN-AMERICAN

In this episode, I had a conversation with JULIE, a jack of all trades in the creative field. She is an artist, painter, and photographer living in America. In our conversation, she shared her stories and experiences being a daughter of a Cambodian mother who went through the Khmer Rouge. We talked about her childhood, her shaky relationship with her mother, her feelings and mental health thoughts, and how she cut off her mother from her life. We also got into whether or not she will reach out to her mother or not and the thought process of regret and feelings of guilt in terms of not deciding to reach out to her mother again before it's too late.

In today’s episode, I had a conversation with Vaidehi Gajjar. Vaidehi is an Indian-American diaspora Asian in the hospital management field with side hustles in writing, advocacy, and journalism. Her passions include writing, mental health advocacy, and South Asian representation. Her works have been published, displayed, and shown in many different platforms. She has a book coming out called, “I’m not Crazy” Anthology so check that out!

S1E8 - JORDAN LEUNG (@69RANCH), HONG KONG AMERICAN COMEDIAN 

In this episode, I got the super funny Jordan Leung on the podcast. 

We talked about his journey and his experience being a third culture kid that moved to America by himself for high school and how he was super smart (Columbia master actuarial science grad) and having a pretty solid career before he branched off to just doing stand up comedy and content creation. 

We also talked about how doing stand up comedy in America and in Hong Kong is different in terms of audience and also the languages. Last, we talked about Uncle Roger and how he's funny and okay despite the accent.
