In this episode Claire was joined by Matt McGowan, former General Secretary of the NTEU to discuss the issue of university wage underpayment. Matt shares his views on what's gone wrong and the significant cultural shift needed to address the problem.

While wage underpayment is an issue in the tertiary education sector affecting predominantly, but not exclusively, universities - the solutions may partly end up impacting all providers and that's because of the focus on corporate/institutional governance in a very recent letter from the Fair Work Ombudsman to the Chair of the Universities Accord Panel, Prof. Mary O'Kane. She then goes on to examine recommendations from some of the key submissions to the Inquiry into the Perceptions and Status of VET .

The Productivity Commission's report has a much heavier emphasis on higher education than VET. So if you work in the VET sector and are mostly interested in the relevant recommendations for VET then skip ahead to about the 27 minute mark - from that point on Claire unpacks the different submissions to the VET Inquiry and then looks at how the most popular submissions to the VET Inquiry align with the Productivity Commission's VET recommendations.
