  • Lifting the Matriarchy while Crushing the Patriarchy is How We do Mother's Day
My first guest is a mother, but also a black, Jewish woman leading a federal political party. As leader of the Green Party, Annamie Paul is not only passionate about the earth, but about social justice and women’s issues. She’s definitely one to watch as we move towards our next federal election.
Anne Brodie joins me with the sweetest mother’s day documentary ever called Duty Free. She also shares details on Oxygen, a shocking sci-fi thriller that is definitely not for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia. Finally she shares details on the hilarious self-help mockumentary called Reboot Camp loaded with movie and tv star cameos.
Do you adhere to best before dates? Lori Nikkel from Second Harvest would you like you to start ignoring those please. With an astounding 58% of all the food produced for Canadians wasted, not a single person in this country, or globally for that matter should be going hungry.
Kathleen Donovan is a happiness expert, and that’s just the kind of expertise many of us our seeking right now. Kathie’s call to action to us is to unlearn what we think we know to be true, to stretch what’s possible, so that we can see our true potential and to live a beautiful life of our own design. And yes, you can even pursue this in a pandemic.
Crushing the patriarchy is on our minds and in our actions from marches and rallies, to literature and politics. GenZ in particular is claiming digital space to educate and empower women, and they are not letting the trolls deter them. Power To Her is an organization focused on empowering women within the community and I am joined by Founders Shuchi and Sachreet who share their mission.
Finally, Andriana Crawford is a Toronto-based yoga and meditation teacher, wellness entrepreneur, and writer. She created Black Yoga Society from her struggle to find Black-owned yoga studios, healing spaces, and esoteric products. Her goal is to promote well-being and self-care to BIPOC and beyond. She joins me to share her why, and with some tips stay calm in the chaos right now.

Meridian Credit Union is taking things back to basics for us this year and building out a masterclass series called “Take Control Woman!” exclusively with What She Said. VP of Wealth, Dilys D’Cruz joins me to share how we’re going to help women manage their finances through life’s various stages, from the basics, to money conversations, to building our wealth. I am so excited to be kicking this off today.
Dr. Saadia Sediqzadah is a psychiatrist at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and specializes in the care of patients with severe and persistent mental illness and provides care for people who are precariously housed. We talk about the pressure our current mental health crisis is having on mental health professionals, and how the pandemic is impacting those with mental illness.
Finally, my Dry January turned into Dry February, March and April, and I noticed a lot of women are either dropping alcohol all together or severely limiting it’s use. Ann Dowsett Johnston the bestselling author of Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol joins me to discuss the reasons why women are giving up drinking and embracing alcohol free lives.

  • Losing Expectations, Budgets Done Right, No Kiss Dating and Pay What You Can Fitness
Agnes Wainman would like you to let go of all your expectations in life because they are holding you back and down. Agnes is obsessed with expectations and how they affect our lives and even coined the phrase Expectation Discrepancy Syndrome. Full disclosure, I’m a little obsessed with Agnes now after speaking with her and I’m sure you will be too.
What happens when a woman tables a federal budget? A budget that makes sense that’s what. Allison Venditti from Moms at Work joins me to break down what Chrystia Freeland delivered this week and why it’s so important.
Considering Anne Brodie typically watches over 60 movies and shows a week, I love seeing her act like a kid when she really loves something, and this week Anne is loving The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney+ which just keeps getting better and better with Julia Louis-Dreyfus dropping into the MCU mix. She also says we absolutely can not miss Stowaway on Amazon Prime Video which presents us with a gut wrenching moral quandary in a beautifully crafted four-person character study. Plus enough to keep you going as stay at home and social restrictions continue.
Dating is hard, dating in a pandemic is especially hard. Thankfully we have a coach, Canada's Dating Coach in fact, Chantal Heide’s counter-culture approach to dating is gaining traction as she teaches women how to use a “see where it goes, kiss the right one” approach, instead of today’s “kiss, then see how it goes” method that’s causing so many unhappy relationships and breakups.
School is beginning to feel a little like a revolving door lately with a now you’re in, now you’re out approach, and frankly no return to normalcy on the horizon for 2021. So I reached out to the always calming Stephanie Sewell for her best tips on dealing with the education roller coaster.
Finally, fitness should be accessible to all, not just those that can afford fancy stationary bikes and monthly memberships which is why Sharon Devellis’s business Reflective Fitness may turn the industry on its head with her “pay what you can” model.

  • Resilience After Trauma, Kimberley Black's Incredible Story
In the early evening last July, Kimberley went for a walk in her neighbourhood as she often did and was found 18 hours later lying in a creek with multiple life-threatening injuries, after being assaulted and left for dead. Less than a year later Kimberley is moving forward with her life, and is offering up tales of resilience through her #bpositive initiative to help other women move forward after traumatic events in life.

Dr. Amanpreet Brar wants you to know that although all of this may feel familiar, this is a brand new pandemic and the stakes are higher than ever. Dr. Brar has been an outspoken advocate for paid sick leave, and joins me today to discuss the increased danger with the new variants, if current public health measures are enough, and the importance of staying at home.
If you’re waiting for the perfect time to pursue that new business, explore a new career, go back to school, or have kids -- you may be waiting forever and Mandy Gilbert doesn’t want that for you. An author, speaker, investor and CEO Mandy believes the biggest obstacle in reaching our goals is the limitations we place on ourselves and she joins me today to share some of her best tips for pursuing your dreams.
Anne Brodie is here with loads of new entertainment to keep us busy at home, starting with the absolutely can’t miss edge of your seat action film, Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk. Also new is Kate Winslet in a new HBO Max seven part series Mare of Easton, the hilarious Frank of Ireland on Amazon Prime, Disney+ Secret of Whales and the can’t miss documentary MLK/FBI which explores the extremes of harassment of civil rights leader Martin Luther King by the Federal Burau of Investigation chief G. Edgar Hoover.
Women going through peri-menopause and menopause will relate completely to Dana Goldstein and her memoir Murder on My Mind which throws back the curtain on the most challenging years of a woman's life with humour and brutal honesty.
Nutrition is key for a long life and that means it should start from the womb. Food to Grow On is the ultimate guide to childhood nutrition, and covers every stage from pregnancy to feeding babies and toddlers to packing lunches for school-aged kids. It covers both how and what to feed children, in a relatable, humorous tone. Co-author Cara Rosenbloom joins me to share what you need to know about iron
Finally I promised last week that I was going to end the next few shows on a mindfulness note to hopefully help anyone struggling during this third wave. • Cities are Sexist, Which is Why Women Should be Designing Them
I think about the space I take up in the world a lot as a woman. There is rarely a day that goes by that I’m not acutely aware of how my gender affects the outcome of a lot of the choices I make but like many, I’m so immersed in my experience that I rarely give thought to how the world I interact in actually determines the space I have physically. My next guest has done a deep dive on this matter thankfully. Leslie Kern, is a feminist geographer, and has laid out what a female centric city might look like through the lens of motherhood, friendship, protest, and safety in her new book Feminist City: Claiming Space in a Man-Made World. Trust me, you’ll never look at the infrastructure surrounding you quite the same way again.

Kim’s determined efforts are keeping those that need the most help front and centre at the federal level and shares ways we can all get involved.
Where would we be without Anne Brodie every week? Likely bored to tears I suspect, thankfully Anne never stops bringing us entertainment and this week she joins me with details about the long awaited Nomadland starring Frances McDormand on Disney+ now. Anne is hoping this one sweeps the Oscars and when Anne says that I know it has to be a stellar movie, plus she shares her thoughts on Made for Love on Amazon Prime , and Held available on demand.
Every woman who listens to Kimberley Black’s story will have chills.

Amanda DeGrace joins me to discuss how the pandemic is adding an extra layer of stress for expectant moms and what they can do to prepare ahead of time for delivery and for life with baby postpartum.
I could have spent the entire hour with Anne Brodie this week, there’s just so much entertainment on the docket this weekend, but we crammed as much as we could into the short time we have including Michelle Pfeiffer in French Exit, Godzilla vs Kong which might be the campy escape you need this weekend, plus HBO Documentary Films brilliant four-part series Exterminate the Brutes from Raoul Peck which is a no holds barred, dizzying examination of the cost of men's greed, genocide, and colonialism.
Have you ever wondered what life might look like if women designed the world? Thankfully Leslie Kern has. A feminist geographer, Leslie has laid out what a female centric city might look like through the lens of motherhood, friendship, protest, and safety in her new book Feminist City: Claiming Space in Man-Made World.
Misconceptions about obesity has led to an increase in weight shaming during this pandemic and frankly it’s a stigma that really needs to end now. Dr. Sarah Nutter from Obesity Canada’s Every Body Matters collaborative joins me to share what’s driving the behaviour of some to judge others and the damage it can do.
Finally, we’ve all been looking for comfort during the last year, so it’s fitting that this Easter weekend, you might find it with a Rabbit, and it’s trust Bear friend. • Bella Brave, TikTok Megastar and Medical Mom Kyla Thomson
If we’re being really honest with ourselves, we have to admit that many of us have got caught up in the “poor me” loop of living through a major pandemic and all the negative effects it’s had on our life. You can certainly colour me “guilty as charged” but when I have those moments, I look for two things, 1 )Perspective or contrast and 2) Uplifting stories, which is why I reached out to my next guest to join me because both of those things are achieved every time I check in on them. Kyla Thomson is the mom of Bella, and their account on Tiktok has grown to over 1.9 million followers as of this air date, and it just keeps growing. Listen to Kyla as she shares Bella’s story of over 800 nights in the hospital before she was 7, her wait for a bowel transplant, the weight of Covid, how Bella is dealing with Tiktok stardom, but most of all, listen for the love, hope, and determination in this story, and then ask yourself, if Bella can do it, why can’t you?
