I caught up with Kirsten Beardsley this week to hear some of the incredible stories of humanity that have come out of this and how Food Banks of Canada continues to innovate and help those in our communities across the country that need it.
Sticking with the topic of food, the last year has had a lot of us reassessing our diets as we seek to make our bodies and our planet healthier. • Women at a Breaking Point, The 'N' Word, and Help For The Fashion Impaired
As we near the one year mark of this pandemic, the experts are now debating if the Covid virus can be likened to a wave or a forest fire with variants across the country threatening to roll us back into lockdown and dampening spirits everywhere. Women especially are watching this news with increased trepidation since we’ve already been carrying a heavy load and are unsure how much more we can endure. In fact my first guest today shares that only 7% of us claim to be doing well. Erica Ehm from Ehm & Co joins me to share details on a survey her company conducted recently that highlights some disturbing trends amongst moms which includes, but is not limited to less sex, more drinking, less exercise, and definitely more frustration. This is a must listen for all women and anyone who loves a woman.
Anne Brodie has the biggest Saturday Night at the Movies ever to share and all I can do is wonder where is all this entertainment coming from. No matter though because tv shows and movies are bright spots in our lives right now, and this week you’ll want to hear Anne’s thoughts on Allen vs. Farrow, a four-part documentary series about Dylan Farrow’s shocking recollections with her adoptive father Woody Allen. Plus a look at Framing Britney Spears on FX and I Care A Lot with Rosamund Pike on Netflix.
Samantha Kemp-Jackson joins me to discuss the N Word and yes, you know what n word I speak of. You will definitely want to hear Samantha’s thoughts on free speech, whataboutism, and whether or not there is ever an acceptable time to use that word.
Would you ever suspect that systemic racism could show up in how we treat breast cancer in this country? Well as we are all learning, systemic racism is insidious and shows up in everything. Dr. Paula Gordon is one of Canada’s foremost experts on breast cancer and joins me to share how breast cancer affects women of colour, how our system is currently failing them and what we need to do to change it.
If you now consider what’s fashionable your daily decision of what top to match with your flannel pjs, perhaps it’s time for a refresher course. Rachel Bristow is a fashion-savvy influencer who has spent the last year seeking out the best Canadian online shops to help us stay on trend, and in a price range we can all afford.
Finally, you’d be hard-pressed to find a person who hasn’t been doing some deep thinking about their future and what they’d like to do with it these days. The result is that a lot of women are returning to school to either upgrade their credentials or pursue an entirely new passion. York University anticipates interest in its Masters of Leadership and Community Engagement degree program will be at an all-time high this year and Professor Vidya Shah joins me to share details about this program meant to help shape our world into a better place. You’ll definitely want to stick around to hear this one because the next application period doesn’t open up until 2023 so NOW is the time.

Janelle decided it was time to help others and effect systemic change. She joins me to share her story with us, and give details on how she is driven to make workplaces more diverse, inclusive, and safe.
The heart is the focus this month when it comes to love and to health. The Black Lives Matter movement, particularly in the last year has ignited a commitment and desire for Canadians to learn more about how history has brought us to this point so that we can forge a new and better path forward. And let’s be honest, it’s clear we have not been getting the whole story and sometimes not even part of the story from our history books. Dr. Cheryl Thompson, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto dives into the history of Uncle Tom in her latest book called Uncle; Race, Nostalgia and the Politics of Loyalty which hits shelves February 16th and should be on everyone’s reading list .
Cat Coode, my go to for everything to do with privacy online joins me to discuss deidentification. Never heard of it? Me either, and yet if you own a business or work for one that collects information then you’ll want to know exactly what deidentification is and why it’s so important for your customers that you do.
Finally, Valentine’s Day can be challenging if you’re single but Natalia Juarez from Lovistics wants to change that. • Financial Feminism, Valentine's 2021, and Risky Investments
By 2030 women will control 65% of the wealth in Canada. This is big news ladies, and I have a mandate here at What She Said to make sure we are all empowered and educated enough to use this transfer of wealth for good and that starts in our own portfolios. Judy Fairburn and Shelley Kuipers from the51, a Financial Feminist™ platform aims to build mutual wealth and social/environmental impact, share knowledge and
experiences, and help women become influential investors, innovators and consumers.
This Valentine’s Day is going to be so different for our kids but that doesn’t necessarily mean worse. Jaime Damak, always a bright light, joins me with some super sweet ideas that focus on making memories that neither you or the kids will forget anytime soon.
Anne Brodie is sharing love stories this week with Netflix’s Malcolm and Marie starring Zendaya and John David Washington (Denzel’s son) and Two of Us, a touching story of the love between two senior women who have kept their love for each other a secret from others for years. She also shares details on HBO’s remarkable anthology called Black Art; In the Absence of Light from documentarian Sam Pollard which reveals a vivid history of a strong African-American culture of art and the new talent springing up all over the US.
We’ve all been caught up in the Gamestop phenomenon happening in the stock market, and some of us might be thinking it’s a good time to jump in and invest in some of these heavily shorted stocks. Not so fast says Melissa Leong one of Canada’s best-loved authorities on personal finance. Melissa isn’t saying no necessarily but she does want you to definitely look before you leap.
Let’s face it, we are all running out of things to do and so it’s with great joy that I can share The Quest with you today, a month long virtual experience you can sign up for at home. Added bonus? You can help raise funds for the more than than 240,000 people living with Alzheimers in Ontario. Even better? • Unschooling Rules, The Little Things, Gut Health, Suspended Disbelief and More
Over the last year our education model has been flipped on it’s head, and many parents, are finding that the current way public education is modelled is no longer working for them. It’s a huge discussion topic, and over the next few months one we’ll be diving into it deeper as we look at alternative models of schooling and ways to inspire our kids in their education journey. Heather MacTaggart, founder of UnschoolingSchool.com believes there is no “school as usual’ in this Covid moment and now is the time to create schooling that works for kids.
Anne Brodie joins me twice this week. First she’s here with the latest entertainment reviews including the edge of your seat suspense thriller The Little Things starring megastars Denzel Washington, Jared Leto and Rami Malik. Plus an understated, and moving performance from Justin Timberlake in Palmer on Apple TV, Penguin Bloom staring Naomi Watts, and Amazon Prime’s Small Axe.
How’s your gut? In the past few years we’ve learned that the state of our microbiome can be directly related to everything from mood disorders to chronic disease. Most recently, science has discovered that poor gut health could put you at risk of more severe outcomes if you contract COVID-19. Dr. Sapna Makhija Gastroenterologist and Co-founder of GI Health Centre in Burlington, Ontario joins me to share what you need to know.
In the month of January we talked about resilience a lot, but simply talking about and defining resilience isn’t enough. Sometimes you need to see it in action. Heidi Latsky has done just that with her short film Suspended Disbelief, featuring Erin Ball, a circus artist, who when lost on a winter hike for six days suffered such severe frostbite that she had to have both legs amputated from the knees down.
Anne Brodie is back for a second segment this week with an exclusive interview with Emma Caulfield, who plays Dottie, Queen of the Suburbs on Disney Plus’s new Wandavison. If you haven’t started watching this yet, I can confirm it’s a must see and of course once you get to know Emma a little better, you’ll definitely want to tune in.
Finally, I haven’t highlighted a lot of Canadian musicians on What She Said recently but when Julie NEff’s EP was sent to me I knew I had to have her on for two reasons, 1) Julie’s voice is mesmerizing and the songs are too and 2) how can I not have someone on who titled their album Over it because if that doesn’t describe every Canadian woman right now, I don’t know what does.

We live in a world divided on just about everything. From wearing masks, to left or right politics, and to conspiracy theories. Where are you getting your news from? Chances are you find headlines through Google or Facebook. The problem is that 80% of Advertising revenue that used to go to Canadian media is now being funnelled to tech giants outside our country and that puts the squeeze on news organizations who pay journalists for investigative reporting. That’s bad news for Canadian content, and equally as bad news for democracy. I share 10 minutes of my interview with Heather Bakken from ipolitics in today’s show, but it’s such an important topic, you can catch the extended interview on podcast.
From headlines to waistlines. How many times have you started a new fitness routine and then quickly forgot about it?
