  • Episode 498: Is It Safe To Go Back In The Water?

Show Notes Episode 498: “Is It Safe To Go Back In The Water?”

This week Host Dave Bledsoe got drunk and kicked out of the New York Aquarium for shouting “I AM NOT AFRAID OF YOU” at the shark tank. (Again.) On the show this week we talk about the movie that changed how Americans went to the movies and how they went to the beach! We talk about Jaws on its 50th Anniversary!

Along the way Dave explains how childhood trauma made him the man he is today. (Drunk and afraid of sharks) Then we “dive” into why the Jersey Shore is a thing for people and sharks.  From there we dig into the story of the movie (Not the plot we all know it) and how it shaped popular culture.  From how movies were made and watched to how fear of sharks made people go out and kill sharks. (Rude!) We explain why a tasteless gluey soup killed more sharks than Roy Scheider could ever dream of.  Finally we examine the movie’s role in gender dynamics and male friendships. (Trust us, it is funnier than it sounds!)

Our Sponsor this week is Sean the Friendly Shark, who wants you to know that SHARK stands for  sharing happiness and radiating kindness! We open with the Jaws trailer and close with The Seaweeds and a romance gone wrong.

  • Episode 497: Come, As You Are

Show Notes Episode 497:Come As You Are

This week Host Dave Bledsoe was asked by a trendy New Yorker where he thrifted all those “awesome vintage clothes” and told them WalMart in 1997. (Clearly a lie, like he could fit in the size he wore in 1997!) On the show this week we examine the music and style that came to define Generation X: Grunge.

Along the way we discover that Dave has always had terrible taste in music. (He has a Phil Collins poster above his bed!) Then we take a look at the history of the city that became synonymous with Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs. (And also Grunge) We move on to the story about the Zine that launched the label that launched a scene, Sub Pop.  We meet the band that launched the Seattle Sound into the mainstream and how everyone imitating that band had an entire generation dressed like an unemployed lumberjack.  (So much flannel) Finally we learn how Grunge was far more short lived than most people remember.

Our Sponsor this week is  Frank’s Second Hand Flannel, because no one wants an unfaded flannel! We open with a story about Nirvana and close with imWisco who doesn’t want you to dress for him!

Show Notes Episode 496: It’s Not Tv, It’s The Green Channel

This week Host Dave Bledsoe got hammered and spent four hours trying to explain to a bartender how you could see boobs in TV  static when he was a kid. (Again.) On the show this week we take a look at how boobs and sports changed television forever, we talk about the birth of HBO!

Along the way we learn that Dave’’s grandparents were too poor to afford more than one television station. (We think?) Then we dive into the history of paying to watch something you can get over the air for free. (Yay Capitalism!) Then we meet a man with a dream, a dream to get people to pay to watch television! We follow his struggling launch of HBO in Wilkes Barre PA. (Scranton was too good for it!) Then we explain how cursing, bare breasts and boxing created a channel that would go on to change how Americans watched and thought about television.  (For the good, for a change!)

Our Sponsor this week is Bulg Box, it’s like Brit Box but for Bulgarian television! We open the show with the HBO intro and close with KarlisMusik who is feeling being green..

  • Episode 495: The Buck Stops Elsewhere Part 2 of Iran Contra

Show Notes Episode 495: The Buck Stops Elsewhere

    Part 2 of Iran Contra

This week Host Dave Bledsoe demands immunity from paying his bartabs only to be found in contempt by the bartender. (Again) On the show this week we take a look at the fallout from the Iran Contra Affair. (Spoiler: No one went to jail.)

Along the way we discover that Dave has a dubious idea of what “truth” means. (If you are just now learning this, welcome to the show) Then we dive into why Congress has the ability to investigate things. (Campaign advertisements) Then we talk about how a plane crash in Nicaragua and a magazine in Lebanon caused the whole Iran Contra Affair to come apart at the seams. (The magazine was Highlights for Kids) We take a look at how the Reagan Administration reacted to being accused of doing all the crimes they actually did and how Congress “accidentally” made sure no one would suffer any consequences for breaking the laws.

Our Sponsor this week is Shreds It All, when you need documents gone fast, call Shreds it All.  We open with the Gipper denying he did anything wrong and close with Lily Kerbey and Tom Parker who want to be clear, it wasn’t them.

  • Episode 494: Ollies Big Idea Part 1 of Iran/Contra

Show Notes Episode 494: Ollies Big Idea

    Part 1 of Iran Contra

This week Host Dave Bledsoe tried to implement a plan where the bartender gave him whiskey, he drank it and the tab was paid by a third party which would remain classified. (It did not work.) On the show this week we talk about the time the United States did one crime to pay for another crime, we talk Iran Contra!

Along the way we learn that Dave’s idea of acceptable parenting, isn’t.  Then we dive into the history of the National Security Council, fighting the Reds since 1947. (Heroes, everyone!)  From there we meet the man who would be at the center of a criminal conspiracy that threatened to take down the Presidency of Ronald Reagan if only Ronald Reagan could remember that he was even President. We follow the money from missile sales to Iran to weapons drops over Nicaraguan jungles. (As conspiracies go, this was one of the dumber ones) until we wind back in Washington DC where everything starts to fall apart.

Our returning Sponsor this week is Second Hand Boom, our guns aren’t new, but they will do.  We open with news from Lebanon and close with Lauren O’Connell who is talking about the man.

Show Notes Episode 493: Secret Dealer Man

Part 3 of the Crack Epidemic

This week Host Dave Bledsoe tried to make a bartender believe he was an undercover agent for the state liquor authority and drinking for free would help their case. (It would have worked if his “badge” didn’t read Female Body Inspector) On the show this week we FINALLY conclude the Crack Epidemic and Coke Month with the story of how maybe the CIA did the crack epidemic.

Along the way we discover that Dave will do anything for love, but he won’t do that. (That being to help a stripper smuggle drugs) Then we dive into the not so secret history of the Central Intelligence Agency. Then we meet a CIA asset and Panamanian dictator who trafficked so much coke the US Army got involved. (In taking him out, not buying his coke, we think.) Then we talk about a reporter, a hot story that was almost too good to be true. (Turned out it actually was too good to be true.)

Our Sponsor this week is the Central Intelligence Agency, less evil than you think, more evil than you would like.  We open the show with 60 Minutes and close with Kirby who is living a life of danger.

Show Notes Episode 492: You STILL Want A New Drug

Part 2 of the Crack Epidemic

This week Host Dave Bledsoe thought he was done drinking but discovered his credit card company had (Foolishly) upped his credit limit. (This will not end well for either of them) On the show this week we deliver part two of the crack epidemic talking about all the lies told by white people to scare themselves about black people doing crack.

Along the way we find out that Dave is a little snitch.  Then we dive right into a totally unnecessary lesson on the historical geography of Washington DC. (Flimsiest pretext yet for a tangent.) Then we learn how the President of the United States entrapped a high school student to sell him crack. (Every word of that is true and mostly accurate.) From there we discover how Ronald Reagan (HE’S BACK!) set the stage for the mass incarceration of two generations of Black Men. (We’re sure it was an accident.) Finally, we explain the most heinous lie of the whole damn lot of them, about moms, babies and medicine.

Our Sponsor this week is Creative Problem Solving, fixing it by making it worse.  We open the show with Poppy Bush sharing his stash and close with Carson McKee who wonders if it will EVER be over?

  • Episode 491: You Want A NEW Drug? Part 1

Show Notes Episode 491: You Want A NEW Drug?

Part 1 of the Crack Epidemic

This week Host Dave Bledsoe found himself unexpectedly in a serious situation when we staggered into an Irish wake and had to pretend he was cousin Eamon from Cork. (He was quickly figured out because his fake Irish accent kept sounding more Jamaican.) On the show this week we unexpectedly found ourselves tackling a topic way more serious than this dumb show should be allowed, the Crack Epidemic.

Along the way we discover that Dave was a tattle tale growing up and then dive right into the backstory of crime in the 70s, 80’s and 90s. (This is where everything started going wrong.) Then we learn how someone (could be kids from Barbados could be kids from Berkeley, or the CIA) learned how to make crack from stuff in your cleaning cabinet.  We take a look at the economic and social conditions that made the crack trade so popular in the inner city. (This is where shit got real) before laying out crack’s real top customers.  (White people, surprise!) Then we look at the impact of crack on the communities that sold it. That is when the show became a two-parter.

Our Sponsor this week is Clean Cut Baking Soda, don’t step on your product dirty, use Clean Cut!  We open with Bette Midler telling kids that crack is whack and close with The Comatose Brothers seeking a second pharmaceutical opinion.
