Show Notes Episode 470: Danger Zone Part 1-Able Archer 83

This week Host Dave Bledsoe said on Tuesday night he needed a little something to take the edge off, we dug him out of a dumpster in Bayside naked and screaming Friday morning. (In fairness, this is not unusual for him) On the show this week we kicked off a two parter about nuclear war in the 80’s (You know, to lighten the mood!) with the story of Able Archer ‘83 and how it almost started a nuclear war..

Along the way we discover that Dave was beat up a lot in high school. (Nothing shocking there) Then we dive right into how the Cold War was chilling out until a certain someone got elected in 1980! (Our old friend is back!) We learn how Reagan freaked out the Soviets and caused them to think he might just nuke them for funsies.  (Mostly because he was saying he might nuke them for funsies.) and how this resulted in what was called an “escalation of tensions”. (We would call it a full bore freakout!) The end result would be the world teetering on the brink of nuclear annihilation for about a week and the West not even noticing. (So much for the CIA!)

Show Notes Episode 474: Santa Went to Sears

This week Host Dave Bledsoe was ejected from Macy’s after getting drunk and trying to climb on Santa’s lap. (He also tried to kiss him under the beard.) On the show this week we celebrate the True Meaning of Christmas™: The annual Sears Wishbook Catalog.

Along the way we learn that Dave was playing with dolls well into puberty. (It would be slightly less sad if they were sex dolls, but they weren’t). Then we learn a brief history of commerce in human history before he finally gets around to talking about Sears. We learn how the Wishbook went from a Depression era supplement to the annual announcement of the Christmas Season for an entire Generation. (This is one thing that belongs to Generation X entirely.  Boomers got pensions, we got a discontinued catalog.) Dave explains the math behind toy acquisition before the Internet before detailing why the Wishbook is no more. (It is more Walmart than Amazon.) Finally, we close with the cultural impact of the Wishbook and a frankly unnecessary digression into how the catalog framed the sexual awakening of Gen X boys. (We’re so sorry.)

Show Notes Episode 473: IT’S THE KILLER BEES

This week Host Dave Bledsoe had a terrible dream that he was being attacked by bees only to discover he was drunkenly taking a piss on a light socket. (Again.) On the show this week we examine a moment in our history when Americans were convinced their country was being overrun on our southern border, but with bees. Killer bees.

Along the way we rediscover why Dave is so messed up about sex. (Again, he tells this story at least once a year.) Then we dive right into why bees? (Honey is yummy.) We examine the importance of honey bees in the past and present.  We meet a suspiciously German sounding scientist in Brazil with an interest in genetic manipulation.  (But with bees.) And we learn how his experiments go horribly wrong.  (Again, talking about bees.) From there we follow the Africanized Honey Bees north to the United States and talk about the strange cultural fixation that came ahead of them.

Show Notes Episode 472: “Are You Threatening Me?!”

This week Host Dave Bledsoe got blasted on Espresso Martinis when he gatecrashed a charity fundraiser and was ejected after screaming he needed “TP for his bunghole” (Just an average Tuesday afternoon.) On the show this week we took a look at the cultural high water mark of 90’s television: Beavis and Butthead.

Along the way we discovered that Dave tried to murder his cousin with fireworks. (Or at least traumatize him for life.) Then we dove right into the story with a short history of animation from Neanderthals to Walt Disney. (We asked him to stop, he just won’t!) Then we meet Mike Judge, a Baby Boomer who was so Gen X he created pretty much all Gen X comedy culture. (Dave made Gavin wear a Winger t-shirt in the studio all week.) Then we learned all the ways that Beavis and Butthead were destroying the youth of America and why none of them were things that actually happened. Finally we wrapped up with an interesting theory that Mike Judge might just be a prophet.

WTH Movie Night: The Day After

This week Host Dave Bledsoe hit the bottle because he was terrified by the memories of something he saw on television as a kid. (Sigmund and Sea Monsters, Sid and Marty Kroft were FREAKY!) On the show this week it is a WTH Movie Night, we talk about the movie that scared the shit of Generation X: 1983’s The Day After.

Along the way we learn that someone was stupid enough to trust Dave enough to give him access to nuclear weapons. (He still has a plutonium core in his closet!) Then we dive right into the backstory of how ABC made a movie so scary an entire generation still freaks out when they think of it. (The same could be said of Jaws) We examine what it took to get the movie made in an era when television was more Love Boat than Masterpiece Theater. We talk about how the urban legend that says Ronald Reagan changed his nuclear policy because of this movie (Nope!) and the guy who REALLY thawed out the Cold War, Mikhail Gorbachev! (He really loved Pizza Hut!) Finally we hear from the people traumatized by the movie and why it haunts them still

This week Host Dave Bledsoe gets lost trying to find his way to the bathroom in a strange bar and blames “The Spirits” when he got caught pissing in the corner. (Again) On the show this week Spooktacular 2024 continues with the tale of a mansion in California that was haunted for business purposes, the Winchester Mystery House.

Along the way we discover that Dave thinks antique dealers might be evil. (We are kind of on board with this one.) Then we dive right into America’s favorite invention, guns that kill a lot of people without reloading! (God bless the USA!) We meet the man who made the Gun That Won the West!
