What The Nanny Heard episodes

  • Dealing with Family Crises

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie offer advice for Nannies navigating family crises, from bereavement and divorce to major household changes.

They discuss the role of the Nanny when working conditions shift — including changes to hours, communication and treatment — and how long difficult situations should reasonably be tolerated.

The episode also explores safeguarding concerns, where professional boundaries should lie, and how Nannies can handle sensitive situations appropriately. The ladies discuss how to remain professional, avoid becoming involved in parental conflict, and stay neutral while continuing to support the children.

  • Getting Attached

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie discuss attachment, and how those bonds affect both children and Nannies.

The ladies dissect the importance of attachment figures for children. It’s not about competing with parents — it’s about championing the children. Realistically it is not uncommon for a Nanny to wake a child in the morning and put them to bed five days a week, so creating a secure attachment is imperative.

They explore how strong attachments can be managed while always remaining professional. How do children process a nanny leaving? What emotions do they experience?

Millie and Charlie also share how they feel about the idea of their children becoming attached to other important people in their little lives.

  • When Two Worlds Collide

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie discuss the wealth gap between Nannies and their employers.

How do Nannies manage the wealth that their employers are displaying whilst asking you to be frugal. How can Nannies keep the children in their care grounded, whilst feeling they are on an upward struggle.

The ladies discuss the key indicators that Nannies are working with high-net-worth (HNW) families, and the pros and cons that come with these households.

    Charlotte’s DMs:

My new job started 3 months ago. And the kids are still telling me how much they miss their previous Nanny and how their previous Nanny is the best Nanny theyve ever had. I am trying not to take it personally but i am starting to feel a little sad.

  • Safety Security & Sense

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie discuss the often overlooked safety protocols. Yet they’re essential for every Nanny — especially when working solo with no one to call on in an emergency.

The ladies discuss the key safety procedures all Nannies should know, how to handle unexpected situations calmly, and when to rely on formal risk assessments versus personal initiative and experience.

From managing safety at home to navigating the wider world with children, they share practical advice on staying prepared, alert, and confident in high-pressure moments. Topics include car seat safety, first aid kits, digital safety, and the everyday decisions that help keep children safe.

  • Self Proclaimed Sleep Experts: Our View

Charlie and Millie discuss the current hot topic surrounding sleep experts and Maternity Nurses, exploring the lack of regulation within the industry and the wider gaps in postnatal support available to new parents.

The ladies question who can truly call themselves a consultant, and whether experience should be measured by years in the role or genuine expertise. They highlight how the title has become a common career progression for a Nanny, but ask the important question: who determines the level of knowledge and experience behind it?

The conversation also touches on the growing lack of consistent postnatal care and how many parents are left feeling unsupported during the early weeks of parenthood. The hosts discuss how this vulnerability can lead families to seek guidance online, often turning to social media personalities and influencers for reassurance and advice.

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie emphasise the importance of parental due diligence, discussing how a strong online presence does not necessarily equate to professional credibility, qualifications or safe practice.

The episode also breaks down the sleep guidance published by The Lullaby Trust and the National Health Service, discussing the key recommendations and why safe sleep guidance remains so important for families and carers alike.

WTNH I am an employer however I am hoping that perhaps you can help?! I have had an incredible nanny for nearly 3 years, until recently, she has stared to get really frustrated and seemingly annoyed with my 3 year old. Who, admittedly, has become rather tricky. I have asked her a few times if there is anything i can do to help, but she says no. She was such a wonderful nanny to D when she was a baby, i dont know what to do? Keep her or find someone with older experience?

  • Having The Courage To Walk Away

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie discuss the difficult moment when a Nanny realises they may have accepted the wrong role. Starting a new position can be exciting, but it can also come with the sudden shock of recognising that the job, family dynamic or expectations are not the right fit after all.

The ladies explore what a Nanny’s next steps might look like in this situation. How long should a nanny give the role before making a decision? How can they approach the situation professionally and honestly? They also discuss the emotional side of navigating disappointment while still maintaining high standards of care and professionalism.

The conversation also looks at the other side of the relationship — when employers begin to feel that their Nanny may not be the perfect match for their family after all. Charlotte, Charlie and Millie talk openly about how both Nannies and employers can handle these situations with respect, clarity and professionalism.

    Charlotte’s DMs

Hi WTNH, I am currently in a tricky situation. I look after 4 children, who for the most part are well behaved. However when they’re not I feel totally overwhelmed and outnumbered. I start to wonder if it is safe for 1 Nanny to be in care of 4 children? What can I do? What can I put in place to help me.

  • The End Game

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie discuss when is it time for a nanny to leave the profession? There’s an important distinction between stepping away from a particular role and deciding to leave Nannying altogether. Sometimes a role no longer fits due to changing circumstances, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the career itself has run its course.

Nannies need to think ahead. What will their current role look like in a few years—and will it still be sustainable? It’s worth considering how their skills can transfer into other careers, and how possible it is to retrain or pivot while still employed. The reality is that Nannying demands constant presence, which can make long-term planning easy to overlook.

That’s why it’s crucial to think about the future now. Whether it’s preparing financially for retirement, managing the physical strain that can come with the job, or acknowledging the mental load of always being on high alert, these factors matter. Without forward planning, both financially and personally, the long-term impact can be significant.

  • Gentle Sleep Practices: An Interview With Emma Dolan

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie are joined by Emma Dolan, ex Nanny and founder of The Gentle Approach, who shares a refreshingly honest account of her own children’s sleep struggles from babyhood through the toddler years. Faced with ongoing challenges, Emma explains how these experiences pushed her to an alternative to the traditional “cry it out” method, shaping the gentle approach she now champions.

Emma breaks down what gentle sleep really looks like in practice, offering clear, practical guidance on sleep hygiene and age-appropriate sleep needs. She shares helpful benchmarks for how much rest babies and children need during the day and overnight, along with realistic, Nanny-friendly tips that can be applied immediately.

The conversation also turns to the role of Nannies in supporting better sleep. Emma offers grounded advice on working collaboratively with parents while caring for a child who struggles to settle, and explains why Nannies are often in a strong position to lead positive change thanks to consistency, routine, and a step-back perspective.

  • When You’re Better At The Job Than The Parents

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie explore the question of who is responsible for setting boundaries and expectations for the children in their care. While Nannies often bring professional experience and a strong understanding of child development, parents ultimately define the values and parenting approach they want for their family. The conversation highlights that the most successful arrangements come from collaboration, where both roles are respected and clearly understood.

The discussion then moves on to what happens when a Nanny feels a situation isn’t working. The ladies emphasise the importance of approaching these conversations with sensitivity and professionalism. Rather than criticising, Nannies should focus on observations, use calm and neutral language, and centre the child’s wellbeing. Offering thoughtful solutions and choosing the right moment to raise concerns can make all the difference in how the message is received.

They also touch on the importance of checking in with parents before suggesting any changes to routines or behaviour. While a Nanny may feel adjustments would be beneficial, parents may be perfectly happy with how things are. It’s important for Nannies to remember that their role is to advise and support, not to override parental decisions.

An important reminder throughout the episode is that sometimes a Nanny and family may simply not be the right match. If a parent does not wish to change their approach and it conflicts with the nanny’s professional values, it’s okay to acknowledge that the relationship may not work long-term.

Finally, the ladies discuss the impact of a Nanny who consistently criticises the parents’ parenting style. This can quickly damage trust, create tension within the home, and ultimately affect the children. Maintaining professionalism and mutual respect is essential for a healthy and successful working relationship.
