A new show featuring a puppet named Gabbo premieres in Springfield and competes with Krusty the Clown's show. Krusty's show is soon cancelled. Bart and Lisa decide to help Krusty get back on the air by staging a comeback special.

A misunderstanding leads to Marge being imprisoned for shoplifting. In her absence, the family, and eventually, the town itself, descend into chaos.

Marge attempts to home school Bart after he is expelled from Springfield Elementary. Meanwhile, Lisa protests a barbaric local holiday centred around clubbing snakes to death.

Bart and Lisa decide to write their own episodes of the "Itchy and Scratchy", while Homer has to attend night school after it is discovered that he never actually graduated high-school.

Homer becomes union leader and leads a company strike when Mr. Burns takes away the company dental plan.

After getting arrested for drunk driving, Homer tries to remain sober, at Marge's request. Meanwhile, Lisa attempts to prove that Bart is less intelligent than a hamster after he ruins her first science fair project.

Feeling sorry for Ralph, Lisa gives him a Valentine card. She soon regrets it as Ralph develops a huge crush on her.

Bart, fed up with Homer's neglect, joins the Big Brother program posing as an abandoned child. Homer exacts his revenge by donating his time as a big brother to a real orphan named Pepi.

Selma decides to have a baby, and searches for the perfect father. She then experiences what life with children is like by taking Bart and Lisa to Duff Gardens, which does not go as planned.
