In one of our more animated recording sessions, we broke down the 1989 Best Original Screenplay category featuring Thomas Schulman’s winning script for Dead Poets Society and Spike Lee’s tragically non-Oscar winning Do The Right Thing. Don’t miss the first part of this retrospective in MMO episode 72.
This pod picks up where we left off with the category as we “discuss” AKA scream like maniacs about the Rom Com genre, it’s effects on man/woman relationships, and the Nora Ephron script for When Harry Met Sally. Mike No 1 is in rare form and bashes this story unrecognizable, but draws some serious parallels to modern times in his outrage. Also Mike tries to point out some of the film’s positives despite the smouldering volcano sitting across the table from him, and you don’t wanna miss any podcast featuring a man and a volcano, but this episode in particular is explosive to say the least.
Steven Soderberg has had a unique and illustrious career, and this indie smash hit was the film that launched it. We bio the unlikely production journey of Steven S, chronicle that amazing career, and then dive into our review of Sex, Lies, and Videotape, another time capsule of a movie that stays relevant long after it’s unearthed.
Woody Allen has been persona non grata in Hollywood circles over the past year, a long overdue reckoning as it seems, and we bio the controversial and prolific career of the New York filmmaker before breaking down the text and perhaps, insidious subtext of his Oscar nominated screenplay for Crimes and Misdemeanors starring Mia Farrow, Allen, Angelica Houston, and Martin Landau. It’s fascinating to review this film under the fresh eyes of our current Times Up society, and we try to bring our critical best.
The retrospective comes to a resounding conclusion with our Perfecting Perfection segment where we first rerank the nominees as we see fit. Then we discuss the year of 1989 at large and countdown our favorite films.
If you enjoyed this retrospective, check out previous installments. We’ve now completed a retrospective in 6 of “the Big Seven categories” including the 1997 Best Picture (ep 2), 1987’s Best Actress (eps 3 & 4), 2001’s Best Director (eps 5-7), 2012’s Best Supporting Actor (eps 10 & 11), and 1974’s Best Actor (eps 12 & 13). Stay tuned for another retrospective on the 1991 Best Actress category, and do check out our series of Best Original Song halfisodes as we mine Oscar history for audio fun.
