Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re all very well. This is episode 52 and wraps up the recordings from Slam Dunk Festival 2021 at Temple Newsam in Leeds. 

This was a lovely way to end the day before heading out to enjoy The Alkaline Trio and NoFx, both of whom I last saw at Temple Newsam as part of the Leeds Festival nearly 20 years ago!

My guest is DJ Zoe London. Now I had only heard of Zoe around 8 months prior to meeting her but in that time I have noticed her name on Leeds MadiGras, Leeds & Reading Festival, the Download festival Pilot and In the park festival featuring McFly, scouting for girls and others. Having then seen a few videos from these events I was genuinely fascinated as to how she got into the DJ world and where her influences come from as she has built a solid reputation for her mixes and entertaining show. 

I managed to get time with Zoe after she had finished with a few hours of press time and had made herself comfortable on the sofas. She was incredibly open and happy to chat about anything including how all other DJs she knew growing up are shit - not her exact words and I may be exaggerating a little there. 

Zoe educates me in the world of Twitch streaming and ways in which the DJ community have supported each other through the pandemic as well as the attitudes she has to deal with as a woman in the music industry.

Hello People! Welcome to episode 51 of the When In Yorkshire Podcast, how are you? I hope you are all getting by as well as can be.

I am back with another episode recorded at Slamdunk festival in Leeds - it was a busy day! If you’ve seen who my guest is this week, have a general Interest in punk rock and or podcasts, then this man needs not introduction. For the sake of everyone else, I will still do my best to summarise Mr Matt Stocks. 

I first remember seeing Matt conducting interviews on Skuzz TV and then he was one of the voices behind Kerrang Radio both of which were done very well and were informative and entertaining however after not hearing anything of him for a few years, I noticed his name crop up on a few festival posters where he was DJing and then it was his podcast Life in The Stocks which really captures my attention. I can’t remember how I came across it but I remember listening to his episode with Frank Turner, then Tom Green, Jamie Lenman, Andy Cairns and Grant Nicholas all of which captivated me and I have been hooked on Life in the stocks since. It’s not just the amazing guests he manages to get, although there are some huge names from the world of entertainment but it’s the tone and candid nature of the conversations. Matt has a great ability to get his guests on a level where they seem to feel comfortable covering any topic and many divulge very intimate thoughts and feelings. As a listener, it feels like a blend of interview and then getting to hear a private conversation between friends which ticks all the boxes for me. 

And then we move on to his latest podcast with Killswitch Engage vocalist Jessie Leech he which, if you haven’t heard - I am jealous of the amount of amazing hours of conversation you have ahead of you. These episodes focus on the people anf their experiences only really touching on their work if it’s relevant and really has created a community where listeners are guests on the show too.

Whilst Matt is known to be an open book and I was aware he would answer anything I asked if him, I inte ntionally kept this conversation light as it really felt like the day was a real milestone in the journey of his life in music and I wanted to get his take on this. There are many more questions I’d love to ask Matt and hopefully we’ll get to do a follow up episode in the future. Hello people! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you are all well. This is episode 50, we made it to half a century of face to face conversations held in venues, houses, tour buses, tents, festivals, coffee shops, hotels and pubs around Yorkshire. 

I want to thank everyone one who has given their time to have a conversation, Alun, Kieran and Mosh for their help with the recordings and everyone that has listened, got in touch and shared this podcast to help spread the word - it is massively appreciated. None of these episodes would have happened without the various PR companies who have dealt with my many, many emails, artist managers and tour managers who fit these conversations into the busy day of the touring party. Which moves us on to my guest for episode 50, the wonderful Tre Stead, tour manager extraordinaire for Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls. 

I first met Tre in January 2019 as she got me past security and through the labyrinth that is the First Direct  Arena in Leeds in order to record episodes 10 and 12 with Frank Turner and Nigel Powel during the mammoth Be Kind tour with amazing supports of Grace Petrie and Jimmy Eat World. 

It was clear from our brief interaction that day that she was shit hot at her job of ensuring smooth running of day to day life on tour including rounding up members of the bands, crew and as happened that day, facilitating multiple interviews and pulling people out of said interviews to go and sound check! My bad on the timing, sorry Tre!

We have then crossed paths a few times and I heard through other people that Tre can legitimately claim the title of best tour manager as she has won an award for this exact reason. Having seen the impact the pandemic has had on the non performing side of the live music industry as was highlighted by the #wemakelive movement, it felt right to chat to someone who has got through this and is back on the road. 

Unsurprisingly, Tre was a delight and gave a really fun conversation.

Adding to my collection of The Sleeping Souls (Ben and Callum - I’m coming for you!) and another conversation held at Slam Dunk festival where The Sleeping Souls played on the Punk in Drublic stage, this was a conversation I’ve wanted to have since way back in January of 2019 after speaking to Nigel Powel about Dive Dive and was reignited after seeing the amazing work VFB did throughout the pandemic. 

We chat about these topics and more bit, if you have not taken the time to fully appreciate the magnificent bass work that Tarrant adds to Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls or even if you have - please go and check out not just the back catalogue of his work but also any live videos you can find as, without leaping into the air, he without fail delivers a technically perfect  and visually entertaining performance every time - or at least every time I’ve seen him play.

This is episode 48 and a return to some of the conversations I had at Slam Dunk Festival 2021 featuring multi instrumentalist member of The Sleeping Souls and Mongol Horde, Mr Matt Nasir. 

Now, I love a Frank Turner Solo gig but when The Sleeping Souls are in full flow, it’s quite a force and has produced some of my favourite gigs and festival sets of the last decade and probably more! Matt is a key element in this and has now gone on to duet with Frank. This was lovely to chat and it was also great to add to my Sleeping Souls collection. 

We get in to discussing Matt’s introduction to music and he is quite possibly the guest who started working as a musician  at the youngest age, how he came to join Frank, joining a hardcore band whilst disliking much of the hardcore- also we agree on a plan to get a new Mongol Horde album recorded.

Hello people welcome to the when in Yorkshire Podcast, I hope everyone is as well as can be. 

This is episode 47 and features Mr Jon Gomm. 

Way back in the autumn of 2018 when I was thinking about starting this podcast, Jon was one of the first people I had on my list of people to chat to as I was a fan of Secrets nobody keeps and was aware he lived in Yorkshire along with people I know who have previously met giving favourable reports which all led me to believe this was meant to be. However due to a mixture of not being free at the same time and a global pandemic, it has taken 3 years to sort out. 

If you’re not aware of Jon’s music he is a guitarist singer songwriter who uses percussive and finger tapping techniques to create layers and add additional dynamics to his songs. 

I met Jon at his home in Yorkshire where I was lucky enough to see his signature Ibanez JGM which is a beautiful looking and sounding guitar released in 2021 - there is a link to a video about the conception of this

Hello people! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re all well and if you’re listening close to the release of this episode I hope you’ve managed to get out and enjoy some of the September sun!

It’s been 2 weeks since slam Dunk festival in Leeds and Hatfield.

 It has been amazing seeing the reaction from those who attended, performed at and created the festival. 

Before we get into the conversations I want to use this introduction to talk about a couple of points. Firstly I was incredibly grateful to be at the festival this year - it was my first live music event and first public event since March 2019. The fact that Slam Dunk went ahead this year should not be taken for granted - this was rescheduled multiple times, took place in September instead of May, went through many line up changes and yet still managed to include sets by U.K., international and bands that for all intents and purposes, don’t exist anymore! The amount of work that has gone into this from the Slam Dunk team, which is no where near as big as you might think, is impressive. They have taken financial and reputational risks to keep the festival going and pulled it off whilst still keeping the scale and both north and south legs. 

Secondly it was brilliant to see how the festival has evolved and grown from the one I first attended in 2006 which had one stage in millennium square of Leeds and featured the last time I saw Capdown prior to this year. Having previously taken over Leeds city and many venues, this 2nd outing held in the original site of Leeds festival took me back to memories of early festivalemorie - this felt like an extension and development of the concrete jungle stage which is where I first heard bands like reel big fish, bowling for soup, the Ataris, the crockets and Alkaline trio. 

From what I remember as a club night and and some fantastic gig at the now closed cockpit in Leeds during the early 2000s it was amazing and a little emotional to see what the team created - not just a solid line up in difficult times after many last minute changes but the atmosphere which was full of energy and positivity. 

It was a busy day of conversations but also great to catch some brilliant sets and also meet up with friends, some of whom I hadn’t seen in person for 2 years.

It was great talking to Ben and hearing about his own experiences and what caused him to set this project up.

Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re all well and still getting by as best you can. 

This is episode 33 and features my conversation with Diamond Dave Thompson who is a radio presenter,  an author and all round delightful human being. I first met Dave when he was giving a reading of his book ‘Here Comes Chaos’ at my daughter’s school and despite having only met him a few times, I could have chatted to him for hours more and in fact, we did continue to chat for some time after recording finished. Dave tells me about his life in music and the friendships he made with bands such as previous guests Therapy?, his upbringing and love of music, the heart attack and stroke that effectively put an end to his life on the road but which ultimately inspired him to write the children’s book.
