  • Episode Thirty Three: Luke Raven - Ilkley Brewery

Hello people, Welcome to episode 33 of the when in Yorkshire Podcast - this is a special one - the first episode recorded in front of a live audience at the Podcast Social Club in thirsk. My guest is Luke Raven of Ilkley Brewery and we chat all things beer. It was great chat and a real education for me in to the world of brewing and I got taste some the brewery’s beers which I can honestly say we’re all very tasty however my favourite being the American pale ale; Hendrix which Luke gives a nice insight into.

Now once you’ve listened to myself and Luke chat about his history with beer and brewing not just in ilkley but across the world - then why not get along to the ilkley brewery on 6th December for their winter social event where they will have 20 of their beers on offer to sample. Tickets start from £5 and include a beer and go up to £15 which can include food and a beer. I’m very excited to get along so check out https://www.ilkleybrewery.co.uk/event/winter-social/ and grab your tickets I’ll see you there. We do discuss some the beers and a description of each is here:

HENDRIX - AMERICAN PALE ALEClean and fresh, the American way. Brewed with oats to soften the brazen hoppy edge. Big citrus flavours, with background tropical fruitiness and a slight piney bitterness. HANGING STONE - OATMEAL STOUTRich and creamy, with a bitter finish of forest fruits and coffee. Aromas of chocolate and smoke. Named after Celtic runes scattered across Ilkley Moor.

VIRGIN MARY - ALCOHOL FREE PALEMary Jane re-imagined. For that time when you want a beer, but don’t want to “drink”. When you want maximum flavour, minimum guilt. Low carb, low calorie and alcohol free. Did you know that a ripe banana can have 0.5% alcohol in it?

MARY CHRISTMAS - SPICED AMBER ALEAn Amber ale infused with spice and all things nice. Brewed with dried vine fruit, orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg and molasses, this is simply Christmas in a glass.

  • Episode Thirty Two: Andy Cairns - Therapy?

Hello people welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast this is episode 32 I hope you are all well. Thanks very much for joining me. This episode features Andy Cairns of Northern Irish Punk rockers Therapy? For anyone unaware of their work, Therapy? Formed in the late 80’s and have been releasing records consistently for the past 30 years so if you haven’t heard of them or you lost touch at some point, there is plenty of music to catch up on. As we discuss, through various friends playing and covering their songs, I was aware of and knew many of their songs well before I actually knew who Therapy? Were and I think it’s fair to say, they have been an influence on my songwriting for as long as I’ve  been playing music. It was great to chat to Andy about his musical past and plans for the future as well getting an insight into how the band has managed to keep going through the many changes in the music industry over the last 30 years. We met at the Brudenell Social Club In Leeds ahead of their gig there. I have recorded a fair few episodes there it’s a great venue and well worth checking out, Nathan and his team do an amazing job and have loads of amazing bands passing through - do check it out. To celebrate the 30 year anniversary, Therapy? Will be taking the ‘So Much For The 30 Year Plan’ tour across Europe in March and April of 2020 starting in Hamburg on 19th March and ending in London on 4th April so do check out their website and social media for dates and tickets links to both are https://www.facebook.com/Therapyofficial/

  • Episode Thirty: Gary Stringer - Reef

Hello people, welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, this is episode Thirty featuring a conversation with Gary Stringer from UK rock band Reef. I’ve been listening to Reef for almost 2 decades however the first time I saw them live was a couple of years ago at The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds. You might know Reef for their multiple albums or maybe just from their massive hit Place your hands, either way they have been filling our ears with funk riffs and soulful melodies for many years.

I managed to get some time with Gary after their set which was part of the 4th annual series of Get Loud gigs that happen simultaneously across the U.K. in aid of Music Therapy charity Nordorff Robbins, who I have spoken about way back in episode one with Laila K of Sonic Boom Six. Gary gives some more information about them, the amazing work they do and his experience of being involved in working with them. We mention a session he and Benji of Skindred were a part of, here is a link to the video of their session: https://twitter.com/reefband/status/1176777446382874624

  • Episode Twenty Nine: CHARLOTTE & Alan Raw

Hello People welcome to episode 29 of the When In Yorkshire Podcast. This is another double feature and the penultimate episode recorded at Leeds Festival in 2019 featuring conversations with Hull Based singer CHARLOTTE and my first return guest, the voice and eyes of BBC Introducing Yorkshire and Humberside, Alan Raw. Both of these conversations show what a great resource and platform the BBC Introducing shows are as CHARLOTTE was chosen by Alan and the BBC Introducing team to play Reading and Leeds festivals as were dozens of other bands this year and this is just one of the festivals that are supported by and support the show.

In her own words, CHARLOTTE produces soul music with her own modern, accessible twist. Her voice is great both recorded and live and she has a great presence and fantastic charisma on stage. We chatted about her musical upbringing, and how she has been performing from a young age in arenas as well as more recent high profile shows with the likes of Lewis Capaldi. If you’re looking for something new and exciting then do check her out.   https://www.facebook.com/iamcharl0tte/

The second part with Alan Raw covers the many roles he has within the BBC Introducing team from discovering and choosing artists to appear at the festival, broadcasting live, introducing the acts on stage and taking the photographs of not only the introducing stage but the whole festival. He was a busy man and it was lovely to catch a few minutes with him again.

  • Episode Twenty Eight: Dream State / Patent Pending

Hello people welcome to episode 28 of the when In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re all very well. This is a double feature episode containing conversations with CJ and Rhys from Dream state followed by Joe and Corey from Patent spending both recorded at Leeds Festival this year.

First up, dream state are welsh alternative rock / post hardcore band from south wales and whilst their songs are great and their live set is full of energy and very entertaining to watch, it was CJ’s vocals that initially caught my attention. The melodies are catchy and interesting, not predictable which is can often be the case however, as good as the clean vocals are - I was taken back by her scream. Not because she a female vocalist screaming, female vocalists can and do scream, I haven’t heard a scream that is so brutal, clear and full of emotion for a long time. The range and versatility CJ has is amazing and I strongly recommend everyone checking Dream state out even just for the vocals. Check and Rhys were lovely to talk to and it was great to get some time with them in amongst their very busy press time. If you’re listening to this as the episode is release then coming up on 18th October they are releasing their debut album primrose path from which I have added a the two singles to the WiyPodcast playlist on Spotify. They have some in store events and shows happening in October before they head out on tour across Europe with Being As An Ocean links to their site and social media are here:

After that I managed to grab a few short minutes with Joe and Corey from pop punkers patent pending. They were a lot of fun and i basically spent Ten minutes with them as they told me some amusing stories which was great fun for me! Hopefully I’ll get to catch up with them with lore time next time they come to the U.K. but here’s a little taste of these guys
