When Yes Becomes No: How to Back Out of An Agreement

Listen Later

Have you ever said yes to so many things and then realize you’ve overcommitted and now have way too much on your plate?

Or maybe you agreed to something and then your circumstances changed and you just don’t have the bandwidth for it anymore?

Or perhaps an initial ‘yes’ is now slowly morphing into a ‘no’ now that you have more info…

Noticing and voicing a change in agreement is something a lot of people struggle with - something we really have to practice to maintain and increase our aliveness.

We might feel guilty about wanting to change things up, or just decide to go through with something we don’t actually want.

But here’s the thing: it’s a lot better to speak up than it is to do something that gets us out of alignment. Instead of writing a pros and cons list, our bodies will always tell us if we should still follow through with an agreement. If we learn to pay attention to this wisdom, we can navigate these choices better.

There are so many ways to renegotiate an agreement…we can change the time, sequence and amount of ourselves that we give. But first, we must get comfortable with advocating for ourselves.

How do we notice our inner conflict about an agreement? How do we handle changed agreements with self-kindness? In this episode, we talk about moving through a ‘yes’ that has become a ‘no’.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

Learn to negotiate with yourself

Sometimes an earlier commitment we made has to be changed because we no longer have the same bandwidth that we did before. How do we recalibrate and recommit with kindness?

Use your whole body wisdom

When it comes to making a choice, most people list the pros and cons. How do we explore our inner landscape for the right answer?

Integrity = alignment

How do we navigate and renegotiate a change in an agreement without fleeing from ourselves?
