Amazing!

I laughed with you and cried with you while listening to this audiobook. I rejoiced with you and mourned and cheered you on after your first kiss! My mom, who already had dementia from a previous stroke at age 51, is coming up on her one year anniversary of being a quad. Like you, her therapy did nothing for her. This 11 hour+ book seems to fly by in 6 hours it's so engaging!

I really got into this book! I'm into Classic Movies & knew the name Orry-Kellly from his many credits on Turner Classic Movies. I've always been a fashion follower--with a Bachelor's degree in it. This book covers both of these interests & a lot more!

Lots of humor, Art, History, sprinkled with an Aussie geography lesson. A little slow at the start, but worth getting through to the heart of it.

A fantastic insight into Orry-Kelly

This book is Orry-Kelly's story, told his way. It delves into his life and times, he treats everyone the same, from a star to strumpet, he tells it like it is. I found his description of Sydney fascinating which gave me a whole other feel for the city I live in. This book is very un tabloid. It's just Orry's story.

A gossip column, not a book.

I am not a fan of "tell all" books like this. However, as a costume designer myself, I was excited to hear about someone else's experience in the field. Peppered in between some juicy celebrity stories, I was hoping for the author's inspirational stories of struggles- such as adjusting to America as an immigrant, fighting for his passion of costume design, and struggling to make it big in Hollywood etc etc. Wow was I disappointed!

I stopped and started this book three times before I finally put it down . I could not get to the end. I was so bored of listening to the author's stories about partying while his mother paid for his expenses, long lists of women who I don't know and what they were wearing at which party, and pointless gossip.

The narrator was very good. Other than that, this book was a complete snore and a waste of my time.

Focus: Early Life of a Hollywood Mainstay

I'm sure Orry-Kelly led a glamorous life. Unfortunately, there was very little glam in the book. It focuses a lot on his early years...

Totally Worthwhile Read!

This is a hard genre to categorize: yes, it is autobiographical because it records what happened to the author, but it is so much more than that. The author weaves a complex intersection of places, peoples, her experiences, and history, and "autobiography" is hardly capable of holding all this. Her prose often takes the reader into poetry, or into transcendent experiences of the countryside. One of the jacket reviewers remarks that it is hard to grasp that this is Norbury's first book, and I totally concur. Her voice is assured and clear, and left me wanting to read most of the works she quotes from, and wanting to trace her footsteps on some future visit to England. And I will certainly read whatever this author offers us in the future. This is an amazing read, and well worth the purchase price and the time. Norbury is an amazingly insightful writer, and she has provided us with a unique story of a person, embedded in families, embedded in psychological states, embedded in a physical environment, embedded in the history of other human cultures embedded in that environment. What an amazing accomplishment!

This is a book I will recommend to my daughters,women I lead and work with and even my husband and son. Gretchen's achievements are the result of an incredible heritage, family, trust in God, discipline, struggles and a deep belief she can succeed. Her reading the book makes it especially personal. She shares secrets, behind the scenes details and is candidly honest about some of the toughest trials she has faced. I would love to have her as a life coach and hope to hear her speak in person. She is a role model for today's women!

Este libro como el otro de Maha me han atrapado...es entretenido, emocional y hasta didáctico,pues expresa sus sentimientos sin temor de ser juzgada. La admiro y admiro su decisión de salir adelante a como diese lugar.
