    Publisher's Summary:
The genocide in Cambodia, which took place following the Khmer Rouge takeover in 1975, is difficult to comprehend. For many, particularly in the west, it is an ugly scar which taints the reputation of the country and the region as a whole. For others, and some who survived it and lived through the mass killings, starvation, and forced marches, it is something which has defined them in a way that cannot be quantified.
My Survival in the Killing Fields tells the story of one incredible woman, Mao Sim, and the extraordinary journey she undertook as a young girl, emerging from the horror of the conflict which engulfed her country to try to find a new life amidst the pointless destruction.
But her escape from one dangerous situation leads her into another, as she was to become an abused wife in a loveless arranged marriage.
Alone, with nobody to confide in, Mao was forced to deal with senseless brutality for the second time in her life, fighting to maintain her dignity and even her sanity, while still grieving for the family she had lost, until finally she managed to break free and find the true happiness she had always sought.
An inspirational book. One of fighting impossible odds, but one ultimately of hope.

    Excellent !!!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Great story telling for someone with no previous experience as a writer, Mao Sim should definitely continue to write after this book. I have enjoyed listening to her story about how much she struggled to finally get a life that she deserves, and almost cried at certain chapters. I had no idea that life in Cambodia was that hard in the 70's. I would recommend this autobiography to anyone with a heart!
    Powerful story about survival
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
A touching book about how one's life can have a very lonely and hard path to freedom and happiness. I love Mao Sim writing style and her story was fascinating. I can totally see this book one day as a movie, it would be a blockbuster. The narrator also did a very good job, everything was easy to understand and she expressed emotions with her voice really good. I am not a native English so a good narration is extremely important to me. I give this book 5 stars!!!
    Amazing story!
Where does My Survival in the Killing Fields rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is one of the most captivating audiobook memoirs that I have listened so far! It is about a women who has survived the horrors of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia during the 1970's, when she was just a little girl. She lost her family members, faced loneliness, and even when she managed to escape the danger, she was forced into a loveless arranged marriage and was abused by her husband. But she never gave up in seeking happiness and freedom! I truly admire Mao Sim and I don't wanna write spoilers, but the message of this audiobook is to NEVER give up and to push forward even when feeling hopeless.
the story of a brave woman
Would you consider the audio edition of My Survival in the Killing Fields to be better than the print version?
Hearing someone else read and tell the story with inflection in their voice makes a wold of difference when listening to an audio book.

    Narrator: Bronson Pinchot
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 44 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The West's most prominent lawmen and criminals tell their stories of fight, death, and survival.
In the romantic narrative of the Old West, two larger-than-life characters emerged as the perfect foils for each other - the rampant outlaw and the heroic peace officer. Without the villain, sheriffs would not have needed to uphold the law; and without the sheriff, villains would have had no law to break. Together, both personalities fought, lost, and triumphed amid shootouts, train robberies, and bank holdups against the backdrop of the lawless American frontier.
This spectacular collection of true memoirs and autobiographies, told by the very people who lived these criminal and righteous lives during the Old West, reveal the outlaw and peace officer at their worst and best. Watch as Mark Twain introduces notorious gunslinger Jack Slade; hear about Theodore Roosevelt's encounters with men, women, and game from Roosevelt himself; listen to sheriff Pat Garrett's biography of Billy the Kid, the outlaw he killed; and listen as lawmen Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp describe each other in their own accounts.
Including other carefully curated stories by Tom Horn, Cole Younger, and more, Outlaws and Peace Officers invokes danger, honor, and the fight for survival during this perilous but exciting chapter in American history.

    Ugh
Only paid 99 cents for it. About 98 cents more than I should have paid. Disjointed, convoluted and poorly written.
I have a real interest in this genre but this particular book just did not do it for me. Too difficult to finish.
Some chapter's were better than others
Some chapter's were better than others, some people would enjoy chapters i didn't. But all in all i did enjoy the read.I liked how it was written by people that were actually there. That really made a difference you got to read how people talked back thab.
    OK if you cant sleep.
It's okay. I found it a bit boring. It was not as I expected it to be. Parts of the book seem to ramble, just word to read.
    Excellent book
I really enjoyed this book as a history of some of the most popular lawmen and bandits of the late 1800s. Most of the stories were written by men who personally knew the people they wrote about.
    Enjoyed Reading
I found this book very interesting. I have always had a fascination for this topic and enjoyed the book very much.

    Title: Raising Ryland

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-23-16
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 98 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
This powerful, moving story - which has already touched more than seven million through a viral video created by the Whittington family - is a mother's firsthand account of her emotional choice to embrace her transgender child.
When Hillary and Jeff Whittington posted a YouTube video chronicling their five-year-old son Ryland's transition from girl to boy, they didn't expect it to be greeted with such fervor. Beautiful and moving, the video documenting Hillary and Jeff's love for their child instantly went viral and has been seen by more than seven million viewers since its posting in May 2014.
Now, for the first time, they tell their story in full, offering an emotional and moving account of their journey alongside their exceptional child. After they discovered their daughter, Ryland, was deaf at age one and needed cochlear implants, the Whittingtons spent nearly four years successfully teaching Ryland to speak. But once Ryland gained the power of speech, it was time for them to listen as Ryland insisted, "I am a boy!" And listen they did. After learning that 41 percent of people who identify as transgender attempt to take their own lives, Hillary and her husband, Jeff, made it their mission to support their child - no matter what.
From the earliest stages of deciphering Ryland through clothing choices to examining the difficult conversations that have marked every stage of Ryland's transition, Hillary Whittington shares her experiences as a mother through it all, demonstrating both the resistance and support that their family has encountered as they try to erase the stigma surrounding the word transgender. In telling her family's story, she hopes she can assist the world in accepting that even children as young as five can have profound and impactful things to say and share. What emerges is a powerful story of unconditional love, accepting others for who they are, and doing what's right regardless of whether those around you understand it.

Wishing The Very Best Life Possible For Ryland!
If you are at all like me, maybe you are getting tired of reading newspaper articles on the controversial transgender bathroom issue? Thinking it is a bunch of hooey and needs to just go away? I was tending toward that thinking and realized I needed to have more information, to see what the "hype" was all about. I was really feeling ignorant and along with that, guilty about my ignorance. After all, I have seen a very nice family in my neighborhood for several years with what seems to be a transgender little one growing up.
So when I saw this title, I knew I needed to listen to it. It took me a short while to get used to the mom and author's voice. Hillary Whittington sounds so incredibly young. I also had to get past what I initially interpreted as her preachiness. However, as I listened to her story, I realized in some way she needed to be a bit preachy, as she really wanted to get her message across. One of her purposes in writing this book, exposing her child to the world, was the need to educate the public. That is, people like me, who have never encountered this challenge before, never even contemplated it, who may have unjustified preconceived notions.
The Whittington's story is very moving and touching.

This is a book summary of When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi.
Original book description: When Breath Becomes Air; hardcover - deckle edge; January 12, 2016 by Paul Kalanithi (author); Abraham Verghese (foreword)
Number-one New York Times best seller
For listeners of Atul Gawande, Andrew Solomon, and Anne Lamott, a profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir by a young neurosurgeon faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis who attempts to answer the question: What makes a life worth living?
At the age of 36, on the verge of completing a decade's worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated.
When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi's transformation from a naïve medical student "possessed", as he wrote, "by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life" into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality.
What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir.
Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. "I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything," he wrote. "Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: 'I can't go on. I'll go on.'"

I spent a full credit on Book Summary - Unfair - I thought I was buying the book
Would you ever listen to anything by FlashBooks Book Summaries again?
No Never - It gave me little insight into the feel of a book that had got such reviews - I was angry to realise that Audible / Amazon made me spend my Monthly credit on a half hour book summary - This should not be allowed
    Any additional comments?
Please do not force people to spend their monthly credits on a book summary -- This is therefore a criticism of Audible and Amazon more than anything else - Book Summaries may have their place but not when you pay over €10 for less than a half hour listening - The Credit system available to monthly subscribers does not seem too allow one to buy a low cost book separately without losing a monthly credit - unfair !!

  • Why Did She Jump? Audiobook by Joan Childs

    Title: Why Did She Jump?
Subtitle: My Daughter's Battle with Bipolar Disorder
    Author: Joan Childs
    Narrator: Mindy Grall
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-15-16
    Publisher: New Street Communications, LLC
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
There is one day in Joan Childs' life that she wishes she could do over: the day her daughter, Pam, a brilliant psychotherapist, plunged from a 15-story building to her death. In this vivid memoir, Childs (herself a psychotherapist) explains how her daughter's life was taken by the most unforgiving of executioners: bipolar disorder. It was the delusions, not her daughter, who made the final decision to end her life.
Why Did She Jump? provides an intimate, uncompromising look into one mother's search for peace, understanding, and clarity amid the chaos surrounding her daughter's tragic death, and a masterful recounting of the events leading up to the fateful day, lifting the veil of shame and secrecy to forge a path toward understanding bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses.
Ironically, even though Pam and Joan were both noted and skilled psychotherapists, Pam still could not be saved. In heartrending prose, Joan recounts vivid memories of Pam's life - the extreme highs and lows; the many red flags; how her daughter toggled both worlds as a brilliant therapist who healed unreachable patients while at the same time she herself unraveled; and how she fooled everyone into thinking she was stable.
With searing honesty and great insight, Childs offers a rallying cry of support for anyone going through a similar struggle.
    Members Reviews:
    Frustrating
What could Joan Childs have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I bought this book thinking it was about Bipolar Disorder. However, the entire book was a memoir about the mother, her love of all five of her children, her marriages, etc. The Bipolar Disorder of her first daughter was mentioned, but was not the focus of the book. It was more of a rambling recollection of a mother who needed to grieve the loss of her daughter. So much of the book was about the mother and her life, that most of the time I was bored listening to it. I had thought I was going to get a more in depth look at her daughter's life, her disease, and how it took her life. I really didn't want to read about her silly superstitions and her ideas 'that everything happens for a reason'. Blah.
I narrator didn't help the book in the least. Her reading was flat and monotone. She read the book like she was bored with the subject. Maybe she was.
Regardless, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. It is boring, depressing and a bit silly. I never felt any connection to the mother or her children. I wanted to, but I couldn't. I was just glad when the book was over.

    Publisher's Summary:
Standing a stellar five feet, seven inches and weighing in at a magnificent 150 pounds, you wouldn't think Richie would be much of a football player. Instead he looks more like a chess player.
Richie Contartesi is a small-town kid who dreamt his entire life of playing big-time college football in the SEC. He had the heart, passion, tenacity, and love for the game, but there was a nagging problem that haunted him from youth football through college: his size. He was never the biggest, fastest, most talented, or strongest wide receiver on the team.
Richie's journey chronicles the trials and tribulations of a boy with a dream and the realities of Division I college football at Ole Miss - an inspirational story of hope, determination, and success that will fuel your inner desire to be the best you can be and defy the naysayers and odds to reach your dreams. What happens next shocks the world and will most definitely shock you, too.
    Critic Reviews:
"Richie's story and book lit a fire within me. His drive, passion, and relentless will to succeed was reminiscent of my time at Notre Dame. At 5'7" and 155 pounds, Richie overcame the obstacles and the naysayers to earn a full SEC scholarship and a place in Ole Miss tradition." (Rudy Ruettiger)

This was a really great and heartfelt novel. I loved hearing the author tell his own story using his own words. It makes the experience more relateable. During this book you laugh with Richie, you cry with Richie and ultimately you keep rooting for him to succeed. I'm inspired by his story and I'm inspired by his tenacity. If you are feeling a little down, and need a pep talk for life, take a listen. Even if your not like biggest football fan, like myself, you'll still feel pumped by Richie after listening to this . His never ending enthusiasm and his will to succeed are infectious and motivating to all.
Inspiring read! A true underdog story.
Where does In Spite of the Odds rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I'd rank it within the top 10% of audio books I've listened to on Audible.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character, Richie Contartesi, as the book really profiles his journey from under-sized walk on to SEC slot receiver.
What does Richie Contartesi bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His passion and energy. Richie's enthusiasm really tells the story itself, and lends credibility to the persistence and dedication that marked his incredible journey.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I think the book title would work well for a film, so wouldn't change anything.
    Great Read! !!
Very inspiring story of resilience and hard work! Great whether a fan of football or not. Must read for my children. Thanks for your example and attitude Richie!

    Title: Accused
Subtitle: My Fight for Truth, Justice and the Strength to Forgive

    Narrator: Hillary Huber
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-17-15
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 147 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Tonya Craft, a Georgia kindergarten teacher and loving mother of two, never expected a knock on her door to change her life forever. But in May 2008, false accusations of child molestation turned her world upside down. The trial that followed dragged her reputation through the mud and lent nationwide notoriety to her name. Tonya's life spiraled into a witch-trial nightmare in which she was deemed guilty before her innocence could be determined by a jury. Her children were taken away without even a good-bye, and her own daughter was forced to take the stand against her in a courtroom. The situation seemed hopeless, and Tonya was shell-shocked and heartbroken. But that didn't keep her from finding the strength to fight.
Accused is about more than Tonya's shocking trial and fight for justice. It is the story of a mother's extraordinary love, the faith that sees her through it all, and the forgiveness that sets her free.
    Critic Reviews:
"Accused, the true story of a Tonya Craft's fight against the criminal justice system, is much more than a blow by blow account of a woman facing a prosecutorial steamroller." (Robert Whitlow, author of The Confession)
    Members Reviews:
    Heartwrenching Story
The story of the witch hunt Tonya Craft endured is heartbreaking and shocking. The narrator brings a liveliness to the story's many characters that pulls you deeper in, especially in the courtroom scenes. I have to say, though, that while I sympathized with Tonya's ordeal throughout I didn't like her a lot by the end. Throughout the book, she peppers in phrases like (I'm paraphrasing here) "It was important that the jury know I'm not a perfect person," yet outside of two small failings she takes credit for, she presents herself mostly as the only morally upright person in the room, a person whose every action is altruistic. I really find that hard to buy. Telling people you're not perfect yet behaving as if you think you are would lend credence to ONE of the prosecution's allegations: that Tonya is a bit narcissistic. Still, narcissist does not remotely equal child molester, and this woman is so completely and clearly innocent it's ridiculous that grown adults could have ever put her and the children in their care through all this.
sickened by small town small mindedness
Here is a woman who is a great teacher, a great friend and great person... small town bias against her. These sick individuals, who were upset were her (an adult) used their children and her own daughter, against her. An eye opening story, one that I hope NO ONE else ever has to go through. Whether friend or enemy, no one deserves the kind of treatment given to Tonya. Having never met her, after hearing this story, I would trust her with my own ten year old daughter, and that says a lot to me. #JusticeForTonya
    Best Books 2016
Great read, particularly as the trial gets going. Sure hope the sale of this book can contribute towards payment of legal fees
    Amazing
What an amazing, inspirational and empowering book. I think every attorney should listen to it along with judges and all members of law enforcement. So many of us need a reminder that we should not jade ourselves to what we think we know about people accused of crimes.

    Publisher's Summary:
From popular TV personality Bob Beckel, a deeply moving, redemptive memoir about his life as a political operative and diplomat, his long struggle with alcohol and drugs, and his unlikely journey to finding faith.
Growing up poor in an abusive home, Bob Beckel learned to be a survivor: to avoid conflict, mask his feelings, and lie - all skills that served him well in Washington, where he would become the youngest-ever deputy assistant secretary of State and manage Walter Mondale's 1984 presidential campaign.
But Beckel was living a double life. On January 20, 2001 - George W. Bush's first Inauguration Day - he hit rock bottom, waking up in the psych ward. Written with captivating honesty, Beckel chronicles how his addictions nearly killed him until he found help in an unexpected ally, conservative Cal Thomas, who helped him find faith, get sober, and get his life back on track.

    Absolutely outstanding!
This is an absolutely great book regardless of your side of politics. The book is about much more than politics, it's about a human being and their struggles. I'm a loyal conservative follower of The Five and greatly missed Bob during his absence. Great book Bob and welcome back!
    Great listen
Bob has for the most part always bugged me on the 5. But at the same time I loved him as well. Much how I feel about Madonna love her music... but reject her politics for the most part. Glad Bob is back on the 5 again! His story is amazing! I want to hear about the bar fights though.
    A MUST read!
I have been down this road but to a far, far less degree than Mr. Beckel.
While I don't agree with his politics, I empathize with his journey and I commend him for his raw honesty in telling his life story up to this point.
Anyone who either is an addict or knows one should read this book. It puts it all into perspective.
