Publisher's Summary:
Childhood is exhilarating and terrifying. For the young Karl Ove, new houses, classes and friends are met with manic excitement and creeping dread. Adults occupy godlike positions of power, benevolent in the case of his doting mother, tyrannical in the case of his cruel father.
Knausgaard describes a time in which victories and defeats are felt keenly and every attempt at self-definition is frustrating. This is an audiobook about family, memory and how we never become quite what we set out to be.
Critic Reviews:
"Via his visceral, immersive art, Knausgaard makes the heart visible." (Independent)
"Rare and ruthless.... Perhaps the most significant literary enterprise of our times." (Guardian)
"Knausgaard's Proustian attention to detail and scrupulous analysis of emotional nuance is almost maddening - but ultimately magnificent." (Vogue)

Knausgaard takes the experiences each of us has shared, as young adolescents, in one form or another, and reveals the dramatic potential in all that we have experienced. It has been said that great dramatic intensity comes from real life with all the boring parts taken out. Knausgaard leaves them all in and transforms them into compelling action. He makes one want to sit down and write a story about one's own life. Unfortunately .......this takes genius and honesty beyond the reach of us all. But ....it seems so easy.
An Alternative Reality
When you start a Karl Ove book you might not realize that you could be trapped in it for several days ( or nights). But after awhile you donât mind and then, when you are nearly finished, you hurry and order the next one, because you donât want to leave. Also, the transitions are magical.
good and bad things alike
The series of Karl Ove Knausgaard's books is really outstanding. It is quite rare to see somebody to open up is life, good and bad things alike, to the whole world. His personality is a bit toward the dark and downcasted mood but it is gratifying to read since one can feel the author's effort to be honest. Besides, most of the blockbusters nowadays are related to witches, fairies, and spiritual considerations restricted to self-satisfaction, and reading someone interested about real life, which is much more troublesome and complex, is good.
A Must Read for the 21st Century
This multi-volume novel is very much worth the effort. New Yorker critic Evan Hughes has written "Karl Ove Knausgaard swept through New York City last week as the literary sensation of the moment. No writer has emerged on the world stage to more acclaim in at least a decade, and readers had to be turned away at all three of his events."
But this is not just the book of the moment. Every volume of this work breaks new ground and shows us where the novel is headed in the 21st century.
There are at least two other reasons to put these volumes on the Must Read list.
Book 3 in particular has very interesting side comments on the other arts such as music and photography. The last and most important reason remains that like the earlier volumes Book 3 is simply a good read -- espcially with the help of a fine English translation by Don Bartlett.
Book 3 and moving on.
If you've read the first two, you won't be disappointed in this one.
