    Title: Conundrum
    Author: Jan Morris
    Narrator: Roy McMillan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-25-17
    Publisher: Ukemi Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
This remarkable memoir is the classic account of the transgender journey. It is all the more extraordinary because it is the life story of a figure who, it seemed, seamlessly and publicly charted a course through the English establishment - James Morris, outstanding journalist, historian and travel writer, famed for a peerless writing style. But all the while he was concealing a very different inner world: from the age of four he felt that, despite his body, he was really a girl.
Determined to be true to an undeniable inner impulse, James Morris, in his 40s, became Jan Morris. It was the 1970s, a time and culture far from our 21st century, where such matters have now become commonplace. What was it that impelled him to take such a frightening and irrevocable step? He faced the mental and physical challenges - the operation had to be done in Morocco and, as a well-known figure, attention from the world media could not be avoided. What pressures would that put on the family - a loving wife and growing children living in a North Wales village? But that inner impulse could not be denied.
Jan Morris tells the story in a clear and honest manner, without a trace of sentimentality or sensationalism. She recounts the emotional, physical, sexual and social issues that abound on such a journey in detail and, through this highly personal memoir, presents a memorable insight into the 'conundrum'. Jan is modest by nature, and it is only by implication that one becomes aware of the immense courage and integrity needed to see the transition through.
This is a deeply moving, beautifully written, unforgettable memoir. Sensational - yes, in a quiet way. Revealing - yes; no punches are pulled. But in the end, it is humane and uplifting.
Jan Morris, now in her 90s, has written a new introduction for this recording. Roy McMillan has recorded Morris' major historical work, the Pax Britannica trilogy (available on Audible), and is the ideal reader for Conundrum.
    Critic Reviews:
"A perfectly formed work of art, achieving the state of grace to which its creator so elegantly aspires." (Times Literary Supplement)
    Members Reviews:
    "A troubled soul achieving serenity"
Published in 1974 Conundrum is Jan Morriss account of her life from a four-year-old boy in a loving family convinced that unlike his older brothers he is a girl, to her full transition to a woman finally completed nearly four decades, a faithful wife and five much loved children later. Now in her nineties, she has written an insightful preface for this recording.
James Morris had a tremendously successful career as a revered journalist (reporting all over the world including in Nepal on the successful 1953 conquering of Everest), travel writer and historian, but his life as a man amongst men (and James Morris met and worked with a multitude of powerful and interesting people including Che Guevara and Adolf Eichmann ) accentuated his own deeply incised dichotomy and sense of duality.

    Title: Echoes from the Holocaust
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Mira Ryczke Kimmelman
    Narrator: Susan Marlowe
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-11-17
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 20 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The daughter of a Jewish seed exporter, the author was born Mira Ryczke in 1923 in a suburb of the Baltic seaport of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland). Her childhood was happy, and she learned to cherish her faith and heritage. Through the 1930s, Mira's family remained in the Danzig area despite a changing political climate that was compelling many friends and neighbors to leave. With the Polish capitulation to Germany in the autumn of 1939, however, Mira and her family were forced from their home. In calm, straightforward prose - which makes her story all the more harrowing - Kimmelman recalls the horrors that befell her and those she loved. Sent to Auschwitz in 1944, she escaped the gas chambers by being selected for slave labor. Finally, as the tide of war turned against Germany, Mira was among those transported to Bergen-Belsen, where tens of thousands were dying from starvation, disease, and exposure. In April 1945, British troops liberated the camp, and Mira was eventually reunited with her father. Most of the other members of her family had perished.
    Critic Reviews:
"Simply written and unflinchingly detailed." (Publishers Weekly)
"Kimmelman writes of the terror and anguish...The result is this compelling memoir." (Booklist)

    4.5* - memoir of a survivor
    Any additional comments?
This isn't the first memoir from a holocaust survivor that I've read/listened to, and I appreciate listening to each and every one. I enjoy reading military history (audio)books and personal memoirs are an important complement to historical accounts of events. With each history book and each memoir that I read, it adds a little more to my understanding of that period of time. And, it helps me understand the context of current events better as well.
One of the main reason why I enjoy reading memoirs from the WW2 era is to understand the motives and behaviours of different people. Did the 'good guys' always behave honourably? Did the 'bad guys' always behave reprehensibly? The more I read, the more nuanced my understanding becomes. I'm always particularly curious about the feelings that holocaust survivors have towards German citizens, non-Jewish friends and neighbours, camp guards, factory managers that used slave labour, and so on. The author, indeed, comments that some survivors are much less forgiving than others - that is very interesting to me and it is one of the things that makes survivor memoirs so compelling. (I realize that I start to experience vicarious trauma when I read too many grisly details about atrocities, so that is not what draws me to survivor memoirs.) Towards the end of the book, the author commented that when she emigrated to the United States, she was clearly and strongly discouraged from talking about her experiences (she mentioned that she would wear long sleeves while at work, to cover the prisoner ID number tattooed on her arm). This is something that I haven't appreciated when reading/listening to other literature relating to the holocaust; my assumption was that survivors who moved to the States were reluctant to talk because of personal trauma, not because they felt pressured not to talk about their experiences.

    Publisher: Start Publishing Notes LLC
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Paul Kalanithi's When Breath Becomes Air is an autobiographical account of his experience with Stage IV lung cancer. Part memoir, part guidebook, and part philosophical investigation, the book is the story of his life, his work, and the difficult - but ultimately rewarding - process of coming to terms with his own death. It is difficult to separate When Breath Becomes Air from the circumstances surrounding its publication. The tragic ironies of Kalanithi's situation - a non-smoker with lung cancer, a young man with an aggressive terminal illness, a talented surgeon who fell ill before he could realize his potential, a new father whose daughter will never know him - could not pull at listeners' heartstrings more if it had been engineered in a lab. The fact that portions of the book were published as essays at high-profile media outlets like the New York Times while Kalanithi was still alive means that many listeners will come to the text with a certain level of emotional investment. The book's publication, which was posthumous, as well as Kalanithi's dedication to writing it in the midst of his swift decline, lend his words a poignancy that's undeniable.
Please note: This is a key takeaways and analysis of the book and not the original book.

If you have a heart, read this memoir.
The late Dr. Paul Kalanithi wrote a memoir of his life, of what it meant to be him, of how he sought meaning in life, and he wrote it while dying of lung cancer in his thirties. As he was about to step out on the stage of his life, step in to his full maturity as a man, he was cut down by cancer. Itâs moving, heroic and eminently intelligent.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
BuzzFeed senior writer Erin Chack hits you in the guts, the feelings, and the funny bone all at once with this collection of personal essays that sounds like Sloane Crosley for the Snapchat generation.
In turns hysterically funny and heartbreakingly poignant, Erin recounts everything from meeting her soul mate at age 14 to her first chemotherapy session at age 19 to what really goes on behind the scenes at a major Internet media company.
She authentically captures the agony and the ecstasy of the millennial experience, whether it's her first kiss ("Sean's tongue! In my mouth! Slippery and wet like a slug in the rain."); or her struggles with anxiety ("When people throw caution to the wind, I am stuck imagining the poor soul who has to break his back sweeping caution into a dustpan").
Yet Erin also offers a fresh perspective on universal themes of resilience and love as she writes about surviving cancer - including learning of her mother's own cancer diagnosis within the same year and her attempts to hide the diagnosis from friends to avoid "un-normaling" everything.
Perfect for fans of Jenny Lawson, Amy Poehler, and Kelly Williams Brown, this sharply observed memoir introduces Erin Chack as a strikingly original new voice.

The perfect balance of LOL and "the feels" in one great book!
I could not stop laughing out loud at this collection of essays chronicaling the transitional years of childhood and adolescence. The stories were hilariously honest, realistically relatable and made you root for the author with every awkward encounter. This is the perfect read if you want to feel like you are sharing life with your hysterical soul mate of a friend as you journey through the first days of school, your first love, your first reality check with situations like a cancer diagnosis, or having to call late into work because you got a menstrual cup stuck. While targeted at a YA books, I feel that it is a book for all ages where you can feel accepted during the perils of adolescence, be nostalgic of the "good ol days" and challenge yourself to live life to the fullest regardless of the lemons tossed in your direction. A millennial guidebook to life and all it's awkward amazement.
    brilliant, incredible
Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before
    Wonderful read!
Upon reading the first sentences in the very first chapter, I quickly became totally and completely sucked into Erin's stories for the better part of a Saturday. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book, so I wouldn't have had it any other way!
    GET IT
She is so real and so funny. Read this book and you will get a few hours of sheer entertainment. Somehow she takes a metaphor that could be so cynical and turns it into something real and feeling and honest. My boyfriend's not my soul mate, he's my carrot. This is so relatable and describes me to a T! Love this, love her, can't wait for book two.
    Very real! Very funny!
I bought this book because I know Erin and her family. As I started reading, I found that I could not put it down! I was laughing out loud and couldn't wait to see what Erin would say next. Will there be another book? I hope so!

The day that will live in infamy was just the beginning....
In 1940, still in high school, Henry P. Lawrence joined the Navy Reserves. Little did he know that a year later, in May of 1941, he'd be called to service and deployed to Hawaii. No one believed the Japanese would be aggressive enough to attack a US territory.
Their plan...to cripple the United States military.
The attack at Pearl came hard and fast. I Was Just a Radioman is a collection of the memoirs of ARM Henry P. Lawrence, a WWII Pearl Harbor survivor, Black Cat, and decorated war veteran.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting but lacking in details
Interesting about his personal experience, but lacking in details
    A fast, easy read
This book was a narrative as told to the author regarding one manâs service in the Pacific during World War Two. The narrator was a radioman on a PBY Catalina flying boat in the war.
Some of the things I thought were quite interesting were the descriptions of the aircraft and how they were used in the war. These flying boats could carry two thousand pounds of bombs and had half a dozen machine guns of various types attached to them. While they were a lacking in elegance in comparison to other period aircraft, they certainly could attack shipping quite successfully.
Another interesting aspect of the book was the personal description of the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were some details mentioned here that I was not completely aware of. It was also hard to imagine such a young man being present at such a major and tragic event.
This book is told very much in the style of a fireside chat. It lacks some details in places where it would have been nice to know more. However, if you see it as an old man telling a story it is quite fascinating in places. When a book is this good it is hard not to want more.
    Poignant Memoirs and Photos.
This book has some very poignant memoirs of Mr. Lawrence who was a Black Cat and ARM in World War II. I Cried and Smiled. WWII is one of my favorite times in history to read about especially Pearl Harbor where American Tragedy struck suddenly from The Japanese Suicide missions. killing thousands and injuring hundreds. Author Pamela Ackerson writes so wonderfully in relaying the memories of this heroic man and what he dealt with. I loved the pictures included in this book. I have learned so much from this telling. If you liked this book you will love Dear Margaret. Please read both. They will give you a quick history lesson for sure. Thank you Pam for letting me read them. I am so happy and honored.
    Interesting Account.
Not particularly well written and kind of brief treatment. My Dad flew the PBY-5 with VP-71 and the 5A with VP-12, and it was impossible to get him to give any sort of detailed account of the war, except for colorful anecdotes. Like this book, much more could have been said. Be thankful for what you can get. The story does provide some insights of the final version of the Black Cat night raider in action.
Pleased that I discovered this book
Ron Miner, author of âSketches of a Black Catâ
It has been my good fortune to have had the pleasure of interviewing quite a number of WWII Black Cats in the last few years, and I dearly wish Henry Lawrence had been one of them.

Publisher's Summary:
A young boy's awakening to the conflict between innate gifts and social class is at the center of this searing memoir about the unforgiving sovereignty of money.
Hoping to make a killing in New Jersey real estate, the author's father, Monroe Siegel, takes a draw from his employer against unearned commission. When the recession hits in the 1970s, Monroe finds himself owing a small fortune to his firm. He sinks toward divorce and bankruptcy, while Lola, Lee's mother, suffers a nervous breakdown that turns her into a different person. Shamed and enraged by his father's fate, Lee grows up wondering what society owes a person who has failed materially but preserved his humanity. "Other men got rewarded for their cold-heartedness, and often for their dishonesty, while he, Monroe Siegel, who had never hurt anyone, had to groan and stumble through life. Did not kindness deserve an income?"
As a teen, Lee tries to make a different life for himself. He goes to a private college in the Midwest, is forced to leave due to his father's bankruptcy, and returns to New Jersey to work a series of menial jobs. He enrolls at a state college and then drops out to seek a better existence abroad, only to return to the United States in debt and in despair. Suddenly, a promising new life opens to him. At a price. The Draw touches on fundamental questions: How do we balance our obligations to ourselves with our obligations to others? What do we owe society when its rules have a legal basis but not a moral one? Written with startling candor and psychological acuity, Lee Siegel's The Draw is for anyone who has ever struggled with money, or who has tried to break through the barriers of family and class.
    Members Reviews:
    A real page turner
A quietly moving book, The Draw recounts the author's upbringing in a home crippled by financial problems that affected both his parents' marriage and their ability to parent, and Siegel's attempts to get away from it all. I highly recommend.
An brutally honest account of the making of a man
In this memoir of his youth and young adulthood, Siegel turns his critic's eye to the family and circumstances that forged his character. There is his father, struggling to hold on to himself in the face of personal and financial collapse, and his mother, who seeks confirmation of her fading sex appeal and attractiveness from her son. Siegel does not spare himself in this brutally honest account, rather he paints poignant pictures of his journey to find himself and his place in the world. He opens the breadth of his experience with a frankness that sometimes borders on the cringe worthy. In this era of fake news and fabricated reality TV drama, a book that pulls no punches is a refreshing change indeed.
    So Much for Good Reviews
Great disappointment. I read a lot of memoirs and was looking forward to this given the reviews. However, the title has little to do with the bulk of the book. The author is slightly more whiny than he needs to be and honestly, you would think he would grow up a little faster and use some common sense.

    Publisher's Summary:
A funny, moving memoir about a son's discovery that his mother has a genius for understanding the intimate connections between cooking, people, and love.
Peter Gethers wants to give his aging mother a very personal and perhaps final gift: a spectacular feast featuring all her favorite dishes. The problem is, although he was raised to love food and wine, he doesn't really know how to cook. So he embarks upon an often hilarious and always touching culinary journey that will ultimately allow him to bring his mother's friends and loved ones to the table one last time.
The daughter of a restaurateur (the restaurant was New York's legendary Ratner's), Judy Gethers discovered a passion for cooking in her 50s. In time she became a mentor and friend to several of the most famous chefs in America, including Wolfgang Puck, Nancy Silverton, and Jonathan Waxman; she also wrote many cookbooks and taught cooking alongside Julia Child. In her 80s she was robbed of her ability to cook by a debilitating stroke. But illness has brought her closer than ever to her son. Peter regularly visits her so they can share meals and he can ask questions about her colorful past while learning her kitchen secrets. Gradually his ambition becomes manifest: He decides to learn how to cook his mother the meal of her dreams and thereby tell the story of her life to all those who have loved her.
With his trademark wit and knowing eye, Peter Gethers has written an unforgettable memoir about how food and family can do much more than feed us - they can nourish our souls.

Now that we know Peters cats and family, he has to write more for us to live vicariously thru his words.
    Thank you Peter.
    Interesting!
A bit too much repetition of events but a very interesting story of an iconic family and their businesses.
Couldn't figure out hue to get the PDF files for the recipes!!
For Anyone Who Loved Their Mother
I loved this book. Heartfelt, funny and full of lessons about life... a moveable feast.
