It's More Than JUST About Birds
If you've ever been so fortunate to have shared your life with an avian companion, you will totally relate. If you've ever had a pet, you will be drawn into the interdependence of human to animal. If you've never shared your life with any animal - you'll gain an insight into what it really means to be owned.
A very enjoyable book about a woman and a bird, or, possibly, more about the lengths two beings will take to forge the bonds of trust and understanding. A must read for any human.
It was a nice introduction to what life with a cockatiel as a ...
Cute story. It was a nice introduction to what life with a cockatiel as a pet might hold. I read this to my children after agreeing to a cockatiel as a new family pet. It was nice hear how someone else related to their pet bird.
    Sweet Book
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It's an easy read. I couldn't believe how much Sugar Franklin was like my Gracie Ann. I was entertained, I learned a lot, and I just loved it! It is not a "How to care for book", It is the story of lady and her birds; you learn a lot as you read her story. BUT reader beware the end is very very sad.
    Cockatiel Love
This book was not what I expected it was going to be at all.I am not a big non-fiction reader but have always had good luck when reading books about pets and this book was no exception. The author's story about Sugar Franklin, the little yellow cockatiel she adopts, was very well written but most importantly very readable and relatable for the reader. She could have been writing about a favorite cat or dog just as easily as a bird. Somehow I had never really thought about birds having so much personality, especially as much as this little bird had.
The reader goes through the whole journey with the author-from adoption and throughout the whole of this little bird's life. By the time the book was over, I had fallen in love with Sugar Franklin and actually cried, which is very rare for me while reading a book. I had also learned a lot more about cockatiels' then I had ever known and we did have one in our family at one point. Who knew that birds could be so sociable and personable? It was definitely an education for me!
It was a really quick read for me,and I never felt the need to put it down(as in bored) because I was totally enjoying the read. I heartily recommend this book to all people that have ever loved a pet of any kind. You won't be disappointed.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest and fair review.
    Good Lessons Throughout
Cockatiel Lessons begins by advising the reader not to depend on the information in the book as medical or behavior advice for his or her own bird. Floyd tells the reader to find a good avian vet and parrot behavior consultant. With that positive first impression, Floyd put me in the right frame of mind to start the tale of Sugar Franklin, the yellow cockatiel.
Floyd admits to a semi-impulse purchase of Sugar Franklin and then tells the detailed story of bringing the bird home and the first 24 hours of waiting for her to eat and drink.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-07-13
    Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 35 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In the 1980s, Nina Stibbe wrote letters home to her sister in Leicester describing her trials and triumphs as a nanny to a London family.
Theres a cat nobody likes, a visiting dog called Ted Hughes (Ted for short) and suppertime visits from a local playwright. Not to mention the two boys, their favourite football teams, and rude words, a very broad-minded mother and assorted nice chairs.
From the mystery of the unpaid milk bill and the avoidance of nuclear war to mealtime discussions on pie filler, the greats of English literature, swearing in German and sexually transmitted diseases, Love, Nina is a wonderful celebration of bad food, good company and the relative merits of Thomas Hardy and Enid Blyton.
At the age of 20, Nina Stibbe moved from Leicestershire to London to become a nanny. Later she studied at Thames Polytechnic and worked in publishing. She now lives in Cornwall with her partner and children.
    Critic Reviews:
I adored this book, and I could quote from it forever. Its real, odd, life-affirming, sharp, loving, and contains more than one reference to Arsenal FC (Nick Hornby, The Believer)
"Adrian Mole meets Mary Poppins mashed up in literary north London... Enormous fun (Bookseller)
What a beady eye she has for domestic life, and how deliciously fresh and funny she is (Deborah Moggach, author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel)
Despatches from Family Life is the laugh-out-loud story of the trials and tribulations of a very particular family. Breezy, sophisticated, hilarious, rude and aching with sweetness; Love, Nina might be the most charming book Ive ever read (Maria Semple, author of Whered You Go, Bernadette)
Nina Stibbe is the funniest new writer to arrive in years. Love, Nina is her first book - a memoir so warm, so witty and so wise, its like finding the friend you always deserved (Andrew O, Hagan)
    Members Reviews:
An hilarious and joyful look into an era
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have already told my friends about this book - and even Twitter. It ws witty, charming and hilarious. I wish it had been longer.
What other book might you compare Love, Nina to and why?
A grown-up female Adrian Mole, perhaps. Or maybe early Nick Hornby.`
What does Nina Stibbe bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Nina Stibbe read her book and she was excellent. One knew where the emphasis was meant to be. Her sense of timing was superb. I felt as if I were in the same room as Nina.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I do not compare novels to films and do not watch Hollywood films.
    Any additional comments?
The pacing, brevity of the sentences, incredible detail and humour made this book one I will most definitely listen to again. I couldn't get enough. I loved the literary scene and references to literature. Rare these days, but most welcome.
    BEST BOOK EVER
Funny. Clever. Amazing. It was a great book and i i LOVED it. Please read this wonderful book.
    Immensely clever and very funny.
Would you listen to Love, Nina again? Why?
Book was read by the writer herself; hence, she knew exactly how to deliver the lines. Really brilliant.

    Title: Playing House
Subtitle: Notes of a Reluctant Mother
    Author: Lauren Slater
    Narrator: Abby Craden
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-05-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Acclaimed author Lauren Slater ruminates on what it means to be family. Lauren Slater's rocky childhood left her cold to the idea of ever creating a family of her own, but a husband, two dogs, two children, and three houses later, she came around to the challenges, trials, and unexpected rewards of playing house. In these autobiographical pieces, Slater presents snapshots of domestic life, populating them with the gritty details and jarring realities of sharing home, life, and body in the curious institution called "family." She asks difficult questions and probes unsettling truths about sex, love, and parenting. In these pages, Slater introduces us to her struggles with her mother, her determination to make a home of her own, her compromises in deciding to marry (her conflicts manifesting as an affair on the eve of her wedding), her initial struggle to connect with her newborn child, and the dilemmas of mothering with a mental illness. She writes openly about her decision to abort her second pregnancy and her later decision to have a second child after all. She tells us about the searing decision to have elective double mastectomy and how her love for her husband was magically rekindled after she saw him catch fire in a chemical accident.
It's not all mastectomies and chemical fires, though. Slater digs into the everyday challenges of family living, from buying a lemon of a car and fighting back menacing weeds to gaining weight and being jealous of the nanny. Beautifully written, often humorous, and always revealing, these stories scrutinize the complex questions surrounding family life, offering up sometimes uncomfortable truths.
    Editorial Reviews:
After a traumatic childhood, psychologist Lauren Slater discovers deep complexity in motherhood. Abby Craden takes on the musicality of Lauren Slater's memoir of a mother. Speaking with intimacy, Craden pulls us into these stories as a good friend does. She gives well-deserved warmth to Slater's brutally honest struggles. This audiobook may feel uncomfortable at times in its forthrightness, but ultimately it proves both loving and gratifying. Listeners who want to go beyond the cliché of motherly perfection will be moved by this audiobook.

    Title: The Family
Subtitle: Three Journeys into the Heart of the Twentieth Century

    Narrator: Geoffrey Cantor
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-15-13
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 47 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The author of the The Children's Blizzard delivers an epic work of 20th-century history through the riveting story of one extraordinary Jewish family.
With cinematic power and beauty, best-selling author David Laskin limns his own genealogy to tell the spellbinding tale of the three drastically different paths that his family members took across the span of 150 years.
In the latter half of the 19th century Laskin's great-great-grandfather, a Torah scribe named Shimon Dov HaKohen, raised six children with his wife, Beyle, in a yeshiva town at the western fringe of the Russian empire. The pious couple expected their sons and daughters to carry the family tradition into future generations. But the social and political upheavals of the 20th century decreed otherwise.
The HaKohen family split off into three branches. One branch emigrated to America and founded the fabulously successful Maidenform Bra Company; one branch went to Palestine as pioneers and participated in the contentious birth of the state of Israel; and the third branch remained in Europe and suffered the Holocaust.
In tracing the roots of his own family, Laskin captures the epic sweep of 20th-century history. A modern-day scribe, Laskin honors the traditions, the lives, and the choices of his ancestors: revolutionaries and entrepreneurs, scholars and farmers, tycoons and truck drivers. The Family is an eloquent masterwork of true grandeur - a deeply personal, dramatic, and universal account of a people caught in a cataclysmic time in world history.
    Members Reviews:
Great potential, but doesn't quite make it
This book looks at three branches of the same Jewish family from pre-WWII Europe and the three routes they take--emigrating to America, Palestine, and staying in Europe. Each branch had a different outcome. The book is the result of the author's research into his own family. I liked, but didn't love, the book. I had a hard time tracking some of the family members and their stories, and I felt the writing was, at times, cumbersome.
    Unforgetable!
What made the experience of listening to The Family the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed the author's look into his family background with a riveting eye to detail. He displayed his sense of humor and his penchant for fantastic research, compiling a compulsively readable account of three branches of his ancestry. There are many players on this stage, and with such a large canvas it is occasionally hard to keep track, but what a wonderful chronicle!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Family?
The early immigrant experience in new York, Sonya's risky venture to Palestine, the horrors of the Holocaust...
    Any additional comments?
This book and performance were fantastic! My only quibble about the audio is related more to post-production than the narrator himself. There were several passages - only a sentence or two - where the narrator's voice was pitched low, and the sound quality was quite obviously different..

    Publisher's Summary:
In Strong Advocate, Thomas Strong, one of the most successful trial lawyers in Missouri's history, chronicles his adventures as a contemporary personal injury attorney. Though the profession is held in low esteem by the general public, Strong entered the field with the right motives: to help victims who have been injured by defective products or through the negligence of others.
As a twelve-year-old in rural southwest Missouri during the Great Depression, Strong bought a cow, then purchased others as he could afford them, and eventually financed his education with the milk he sold. After graduating law school and serving in the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps, he rejected offers to practice in New York and San Francisco and returned to his hometown of Springfield.

    Worth a listen
Would you listen to Strong Advocate again? Why?
I might. I didn't know who Thomas Strong was before listening to this book, but he seems like the kind of attorney young attorneys should model themselves after. The story of his life the challenges he faced as a young man, and how he used his circumstances and losses to propel himself into a successful legal career were inspiring.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The time he spent talking about his cases and his philosophy in approaching and taking on new cases.
Have you listened to any of Alan Taylors other performances before? How does this one compare?
Never listened to any other of Alan Taylor's performances, but when a performer disappears into the role and does not distract from the content of the text, I think he or she does a great job. I think Mr. Taylor did that.
    SOLID

Length: 9 hrs and 18 mins

    Release date: 09-17-13
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 43 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author and environmental activist Bill McKibben recounts the personal and global story of the fight to build and preserve a sustainable planet.
Bill McKibben is not a person you'd expect to find handcuffed and behind bars, but that's where he found himself in the summer of 2011 after leading the largest civil disobedience in 30 years, protesting the Keystone XL pipeline in front of the White House.
With the Arctic melting, the Midwest in drought, and Irene scouring the Atlantic, McKibben recognized that action was needed if solutions were to be found. Some of those would come at the local level, where McKibben joined forces with a Vermont beekeeper raising his hives as part of the growing trend toward local food. Other solutions would come from a much larger fight against the fossil-fuel industry as a whole.
Oil and Honey is McKibben's account of these two necessary and mutually reinforcing sides of the global climate fight - from the center of the maelstrom and from the growing hive of small-scale local answers. With empathy and passion he makes the case for a renewed commitment on both levels, telling the story of raising one years honey crop and building a social movement thats still cresting.
Includes a bonus interview with the author.
    Members Reviews:
    Informative, historical and well written.
Would you consider the audio edition of Oil and Honey to be better than the print version?
Easy listening, but handy with a computer nearby for research.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Oil and Honey?
Speaking about the rise of the 350 movement on a global scale (fighting for the environment, against the Keystone Pipeline in particular), and the plight of bees and his efforts on a local level (interspersed with personal notes on meetings with important figures or events, etc.) made for very interesting read. I unfairly presumed this would be a dry read/listen, but feel far better informed, and even entertained after having read this.
Which character as performed by Kevin T. Collins was your favorite?
    N/A
A life threateneing challenge for earthlings
Where does Oil and Honey rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    N/A
What did you like best about this story?
McKibben debunks climate change deniers with hard data that is easily understood. The overabundance of fossil fuels, specifically known oil and gas reserves. The data does not consider supplies from fracking, tar sands, shale and coal. We can burn up our planet many times over and turn our atmosphere into one like Venus that will not sustain our life forms.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When deniers say to me that these events have occurred before and the planet has survived, I have some factoids: specifically, this number of extreme weather events has not occurred during the last 120,000 years. The number of extreme events is compounding each year as global temperatures rise.
    Any additional comments?
This book is a good tandem for The Sixth Extinction.
McKibben a Great Man; His Book Good but Not Great
The emphasis on bees and honey is a stretch., detracting from what the book is about.

    Title: The Dark Path
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: David Schickler
    Narrator: David Schickler
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-12-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Since childhood, David Schickler has been torn between his intense desire to become a Catholic priest and his equally fervent desire for the company of women. Growing up in a family of staunch Catholics in upstate New York, Schickler senses God along what he calls "the dark path", a shadowy trail that winds through the woods behind his childhood home. On this path he begins his ongoing, frustratingly one-sided talks with God. Things don't get any clearer for Schickler at college, where he initiates serious conversations about becoming a Jesuit just as he enters a passionate relationship with a vivacious, agnostic young woman. He tries various obsessions-karate, beer, writing fiction-attempting to duck the mystical God he feels called to serve as a priest. His pursuits of these passions, and of the young woman, take him from Germany to New York City and eventually to New England, where he has a life-changing reckoning about whether he will end up wearing the clerical collar or getting the girl.
Candid and funny, lyrical and blunt, The Dark Path is an evocative portrayal of one man's struggle with faith and women . . . both of which he tries to love with bold, bracing honesty.
    Members Reviews:
Should Schickler become a Catholic priest -- or screw his girlfriend?
I read a lot, in many genres, and I LOVED this book. David Schickler is VERY funny. He shares his vulnerabilities in a refreshing way. His dialogue is wonderful: honest, true, and laugh out-loud funny. Truth be told, I discovered this book on the New Non-Fiction shelf at my local library. Even though I finished it long before the 2-week due date, I ordered a fresh copy from Amazon, so I could own it.
Reading Schlicker's memoir prompted me to go back to his 2001 best-selling book, Kissing In Manhattan. I recommend it highly, too: beautifully written, with sexy, clever twists. [ASIN:389667167]
I hope to meet David Schlicker in person someday to tell him how much I enjoyed reading The Dark Path -- and to thank him for helping me resolve some of my personal quandaries.
Funny and poignant, and great storytellng above all else
I'll admit to being a fan of David Schickler's since his first New Yorker short story. I loved Kissing in Manhattan and Sweet and Vicious, and I've been waiting a while for his next book to come out. When I heard it was a memoir, not another novel, I gave a moment's pause, because I'm not typically a fan of memoirs -- most of which I find over-indulgent and myopic.
What a treat this one is! The stories Schickler tells are hilarious, and he weaves those stories together powerfully with his personal reflections and struggles about his identity and his calling. I'm not particularly religious myself, and I certainly never considered joining the priesthood, but Schickler's story is not just about religion. He describes his personal evolution with such clear-eyed honesty and self-awareness that you can't help identifying with him at numerous times throughout the book.
Above all, Schickler has not lost his touch for storytelling. It's a memoir that reads like a novel, and writing is absolutely brilliant. At times share, at time dreamlike and at times rollicking, The Dark Path never disappoints.
    A good writer with a not-so-great story
I really struggled how to rate this book.

A 25-year-old backcountry wanderer, a man happiest exploring wild places with his dog, Dan Bigley woke up one midsummer morning to a day full of promise. Before it was over, after a stellar day of salmon fishing along Alaskas Kenai and Russian rivers, a grizzly came tearing around a corner in the trail. Dan barely had time for bear charging to register before it had him on the ground, altering his life forever.
Upper nose, eyes, forehead anatomy unrecognizable, as the medevac report put it. Until then, one thing after another had fallen into place in Dans life. He had a job he loved taking troubled kids on outdoor excursions. He had just bought a cabin high in the Chugach Mountains with a view that went on forever. He was newly in love. After a year of being intrigued by a woman named Amber, they had just spent their first night together. All of this was shattered by the mauling that nearly killed him, that left him blind and disfigured.
Facing paralyzing pain and inconceivable loss, Dan was in no shape to be in a relationship. He and Amber let each other go. Five surgeries later, partway into his long healing journey, they found their way back to each other. The couples unforgettable story is one of courage, tenacious will, and the power of love to lead the way out of darkness. Dan Bigleys triumph over tragedy is a testament to the ability of the human spirit to overcome physical and emotional devastation, to choose not just to live, but to live fully.

    Publisher's Summary:
Some tall girls grow up to have perfect posture and are later seen gracing the pages of magazines. Some are natural athletes with toned legs that mask their overlarge feet. Then there are other tall girls: the ones who are always tripping over themselves; who never look normal in any size of clothing; who literally dont fit in.
Comedian Margot Leitman was one of these awkward giants, and Gawky is the painfully funny chronicle of her experiences growing up tall. Reaching five feet six inches in fourth grade - and approaching six feet in high school - Leitman realized early on that she'd always stand out from the crowd. To cope, she developed a thick skin and a sharp sense of humor, and instead of forever trying to blend in, she decided to embrace her center-of-attention status. Leitman wears funky, Ziggy Stardust-era jumpsuits (in the 90s); takes up any cause she can find (whether saving the public beaches or protesting prom); and generally makes as much use of her big presence as humanly possible.
Leitmans memoir is a hilarious celebration of growing up gangly. Endearing and encouraging, Gawky is a cathartic release of everything awkward girls endure - and a tribute to a youth larger than life.
    Members Reviews:
    Hilarious and heartwarming book
I just finished this book and I loved it. Margot Leitman is not only hilarious, but you're rooting for her the whole way through. She perfects the delicate balance of ripping on the high school morons who didn't quite "get" her, while also coming off as so likable and endearing--no easy feat. There were quite a few moments when I laughed out loud while reading this book on the subway--when she talks about her middle school's endless supply of men with AIDS, when the college hottie suddenly kisses her and she exclaims, "what was that for?" them compares that to someone puffing his shirt and saying "Hot enough for ya?" These things KILLED me. Such a fun read. I recommend it for people of all heights!
    So funny and well written
So funny and well written. It's rare that a book makes me laugh out loud like this one did! Even though I'm short I totally related to Margot's tales of being the oddball. Highly recommend this book!
    brilliant comedic essays!!
I just got done reading the book -- it's smart, hilarious, and touching. I couldn't put it down. Margot Leitman can really write a solid comedic essay based on embarrassing life experiences.
    Love this book!
Hilarious! Such a great coming of age story about figuring out where you fit in. Margot Leitman captures the awkwardness of youth so perfectly.
Interesting and reminds you of your own awkward phase
I think because I am so short I felt drawn to this book. I have always wanted to be taller and it seemed funny to me that tall people also have issues about their height.
Although this book did have a lot of humour and some of it was truly laugh out loud funny, the way the story unfolded was rather disjointed in places.

Who were the Ship It Holla Ballas?
Arguably the most successful poker crew of all time, they took advantage of the online poker boom to win tens of millions of dollars before most of them were old enough to set foot inside a casino. Then they did what any red-blooded teenagers with mountains of cash and no responsibilities would do: They partied like rock stars, transforming themselves from Internet nerds with zero life skills into legends, at least in their own minds.
In Ship It Holla Ballas!, Jonathan Grotenstein and Storms Reback trace the rise and fall of Internet poker through the eyes of its most unlikely stars: A group of teenage college dropouts, united by social media, who bluffed their way to the top of the game.

If you know what it means to short stack 50NL or have ever read the 2+2 forums you will love this book. During the poker boom anyone could regularly pull up live tables of these guys playing for tens of thousands of dollars and more. This is the story of how they got there and how the poker boom and subsequent bust evolved.
