    Narrator: Jason Lovett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-03-13
    Publisher: Glenn Langohr
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A true account of the author's drug dealing past that turned into trumped up organized crime charges over a bad business deal with the fabricator of Custom Craft Harley Davidson's. Another true account of how the corrupt California prison union used terror tactics with then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger relating to the 3 Strikes Law. Harvard lawyer Daniel Morris has since confirmed it with, "A shameful lie."
Roll Call is a true prison story with a cast of characters that include Mexican drug cartels, Southern California street gangs and Hell's Angels all fighting for their piece of the drug culture. In the middle of it all, B.J. is hell bent for destruction until he realizes his destiny in the nick of time.
Add a good detective squeezed out of the loop by an overzealous narcotic detective; a robust prison union trying to call the shots; a handful of drug criminals trying to find their conscience and you have the perfect recipe for a revolutionary uprising, bound by blood, all leaving the reader wondering, who are the real criminals?

    A true indie achievement
The author shed a whole lot of blood, sweat, and tears to create this book. It's one hell of a story. Apparently took 7 years to write. It is really well done. Highly recommended.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Kassabova was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and grew up under the drab, muddy, gray mantle of one of communisms most mindlessly authoritarian regimes. Escaping with her family as soon as possible after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, she lived in Britain, New Zealand, and Argentina, and several other places. But when Bulgaria was formally inducted to the European Union she decided it was time to return to the home she had spent most of her life trying to escape. What she found was a country languishing under the strain of transition. This two-part memoir of Kapkas childhood and return explains life on the other side of the Iron Curtain.
    Editorial Reviews:
Poet and essayist Kapka Kassabova reveals glimpses from behind the Iron Curtain in Street Without a Name. As a teenager, Kassabova left Bulgaria for New Zealand and later the United Kingdom. In her memoir, she writes not only about her Communist-era childhood but her decision to return to her home country as an adult.
    Members Reviews:
This book took me back in time
Good book. I found many of the stories from post communist Bulgaria painfully familiar especially the ones with the family members.
The communist system produced a few lost generations of confused souls with stories that are difficult to explain to somebody coming from a free world.
Very revealing of life behind iron curtain
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Very revealing of life behind iron curtain. These things you need to know. Be prepared though; some of the recalled events will break your heart.
What aspect of Emily Grays performance would you have changed?
She's not the best ready. Didn't do very well with voices of different characters.

    Title: Rather Die Fighting

    Language: English
    Release date: 01-28-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A gripping story of suffering, endurance, and the triumphagainst massive oddsof the human spirit.
Sir Martin Gilbert, from his Introduction
Frank Blaichman was 16 years old when the war broke out. In 1942, the killings began in Poland. With his family and friends decimated by the roundups, Blaichman decided that he would rather die fighting; he set off for the forest to find the underground bunkers of Jews who had already escaped. Together they formed a partisan force dedicated to fighting the Germans.
This is a harrowing, utterly moving memoir of a young Polish Jew who chose not to go quietly and defied the mighty German war machine during World War II.
    Editorial Reviews:
By age 19, Frank Blaichman had seen most of his friends and family members die at the hands of the Nazis. Rather than hide, Blaichman led a platoon of Jewish resistance fighters in Poland.
Rather Die Fighting is Blaichmans vividly recollected true story of war and survival. "Skinny Frank" writes about escaping from the Germans, who were resettling Polands Jews, and finding his way to a group of Jews hiding in a forest that he organized into a fighting unit. His story also includes acts of daring, like posing as policeman to obtain weapons and refusing to wear the Nazi-imposed Star of David.
In his performance, Pat Young balances the heart-wrenching subject matter of this story with a note of restraint.
    Members Reviews:
    A view from the inside
This is a fascinating book written by a Jewish man who served in the partisan movement and Polish underground during World War Two. Frankly, we are lucky to have this book given the dangers this man faced every day of his life during the war.
It is not an easy book to read. The author loses most of his family in the first thirty pages of the war. He refuses to go quietly and literally would prefer to die fighting the Germans.
His first rifle was a pitchfork modified to look like a rifle with a bayonet on the front end. The result was in the dark he and his men could be mistaken for Polish soldiers. Things progressed until they eventually found serious weaponry or captured it from the Germans and turned the weapons on the invaders.
It is no minor miracle the man survived the war. As a Jew, he had plenty of people trying to kill him. Eventually, after the war he moves to the United States. This had me wondering how many of these brave men did the very same thing and started their lives over.
One of the things that became clear to me was how the war shaped post-war Poland. Large populations of people, their culture, and private property were displaced or destroyed during the war. It was hell, for sure. However, today the nation simply cannot be what it was before the war. Too many people have died.
One of the best things about the book is a very personal story. The author, despite living in swamps and forests, from minute-to-minute, manages to find the love of his life. I thought it was magnificent he succeeded despite all odds.
Over all I enjoyed the book a good deal. I think it provides great insight into an area of history that should never be forgotten. There are many lessons to be learned from this manâs valor and perseverance.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 26 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Margaret Roach has been harvesting 30 years of backyard parables - deceptively simple, instructive stories from a life spent digging ever deeper - and has distilled them in this memoir along with her best tips for garden making, discouraging all manner of animal and insect opponents, at-home pickling, and more. After ruminating on the bigger picture in her memoir And I Shall Have Some Peace There, Margaret Roach has returned to the garden, insisting as ever that we must garden with both our head and heart, or as she expresses it, with "horticultural how-to and woo-woo."
InThe Backyard Parables, Roach uses her fundamental understanding of the natural world, philosophy, and life to explore the ways that gardening saved and instructed her, and meditates on the science and spirituality of nature, reminding her listeners and herself to keep on digging.
    Critic Reviews:
"As a passionate, hopeful and often self-delusional gardener (the only kind of gardener there is!), I loved this book. Margaret Roach writes with intelligence, compassion, and-most of all-sanity. Her work is a blessing." (Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love)

    Members Reviews:
Leonore Dvorkin's "Another Chance at Life"
In this book about breast cancer, Leonore Dvorkin shares both her own experience and the fruit of her extensive research. Her story is presented in a factual and matter-of-fact style, but nonetheless it is very affecting. She takes us from the chilling diagnosis of cancer, through her decision to undergo a mastectomy to try to rid herself of the disease rather than risk what seemed less definitive treatments, through the period of adjustment to her lopsided front, to her normal, happy life ten years after the surgery when she is still cancer-free and grateful for the treatment that saved her life.
It's a good read; one can open it to any page and be drawn in to a compelling narrative. There are bits about her childhood; about her careers as language tutor, weight training instructor, and writer; and about her always-supportive husband. Details of the aftermath of her surgery are interwoven with the triumphant narrative of her recovery. Among the events included are her visit to a support group, which she did not find helpful; her decision against reconstructive surgery; and her selection of a prosthesis. The prosthesis, carefully chosen with professional help, restored a satisfying symmetry to her clothed front, but she found out, too, that if a bra's pocket does not hold a prosthesis properly, the prosthesis will shift disconcertingly. Such information, ruefully conveyed, is of interest to the general reader and can be very useful to anyone who, like Dvorkin, finds that a breast has "turned against" her and must be removed if she is to have another chance at life.
Other very practical information is available in the considerable appendix, which debunks some of the myths surrounding breast cancer, puts it into perspective with some statistics (for example, far more women die of lung cancer every year than of breast cancer), and lists factors that put women at risk for breast cancer.

    Awesome book!
Prior to listening to this audio book (narrated by the author) I had no idea what to expect, and a prejudicial voice told me, "Don't get your hopes up, it probably won't be very good." So it wasn't until like a year after purchasing the book that I actually listened to it, even though I am a huge fan of Justin Bieber.
Pattie Mallete, who more often than not is simply referred to as "Justin Bieber's mom," pours her heart and soul into this book about her incredible journey in life and is brave andcourageousfor doing so. She literally reveals her deepest and darkest secrets, which also include some not very flattering events about Justin's father, Jeremy.
While listening to the book, like a little kid I kept thinking to myself, "Talk about Justin already, I want to hear about Justin, this book is so dark." However, the first portion of the book where she discusses her struggles and upbringing is really the crux of the book and people who aresurvivorsof sexual abuse (and perhaps those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction) will find solace in her words.
The book also spends a fair amount of time discussing her faith in God, something not really up my alley since I am agnostic; however, she doesn'tproselytizeor shove faith or religion down the reader's throat. She simply shares from her heart, which makes this book so incredible for people from all walks of life, beliebers and non-beliebers alike. She makes it clear that she didn't force faith/religion on Justin either, but simply gave him the tools he needed to make his own decision.
I was shocked at her candid descriptions of her struggles as a survivor of sexual abuse, growing up with hardly any money, and amazed that she just refused to give up on life.

    Truly a remarkable young man
If you could sum up Honor Bound in three words, what would they be?
    Honor, patience and faith
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
I thought I was pretty well versed on this case before I read this book but I was still surprised by a few facts in this memoir.
Giulia Bongiorno maybe my new personal hero. Judge Hellman is up there also.
Have you listened to any of Seth Numrichs other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first audiobook read by Seth Numrich and I enjoyed his pace and voice, I would listen to him again.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I think the title of the book says it all - Honor bound.
    Any additional comments?
Fast paced and straight forward. It was compelling to see Raphaelle's point of view, largely viewed as merely pawn in this tragic series of events; he is brutally honest and doesn't always paint himself in the best light but is unwavering in his pursuit to do the right thing. All for a girl he had known for barely more than a week.
This book also details the immense cost this trial took on his family which was touching, I particularly felt for his sister. Their father should be proud of having raised such upstanding children.
I was always amazed at how easily he could have chosen to save or at least help himself but stuck to the truth. He possesses qualities that are increasingly rare in this day and age.
    Enjoyed immensely!
I really enjoyed all aspects of this book.
Where does Honor Bound rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
If you were interested in this case, you will enjoy this book
What was one of the most memorable moments of Honor Bound?
We all heard about this case. Now I feel like I know what really happened.
Have you listened to any of Seth Numrichs other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
My heart hurt for everyone involved. There are no winners.
    Any additional comments?
Also read Amanda Knox's book, Waiting To Be Heard
    Great book!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! This put to clarity every question I had after listening to Amanda Knox' book.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The complete consistency with which Sollecito's story and Amanda Knox story of the events parallel.
What does Seth Numrich bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Good overall dramatization
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I wish I could have.
    Raffaele Explains His Side
Would you listen to Honor Bound again? Why?
    Yes
What did you like best about this story?
It was extremely nice to get more Raffaele, than Amanda.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, is one of the finest historians of our age. A former special assistant to President Kennedy, he received the National Humanities Medal in 1998. In this first volume of memoirs, Schlesinger turns a keen eye on his own remarkable life - from his Midwestern upbringing, through his days at Harvard, to his involvement with World War II.
The engrossing story of his life reads like a timeline of the 20th century. With anecdotes featuring the major politicians, intellectuals, and entertainers of the era, it is easy to see why Dr. Henry Kissinger called this work "one of the definitive histories of the period." Schlesingers shrewd observations and sharp wit have long helped Americans understand who they are and where theyve come from. Now his own story comes to life with a lucid, often humorous narration by Nelson Runger.
    Members Reviews:
    Perfect Combination
Sclessinger read and interpreted by Nelson Runger provides a very enjoyable experience well worth a couple of listens.
This memoir, more of an intimate history of the times, focuses on the people more than mere events in telling in a vivid fashion what is was like to grow up and live in the first fifty years of the momentous twentieth century. Schlessinger draws from his personal experiences to describe the interwar years in the Ivy League, then a very comprehensive yet readable account of the New Deal, or, rather the New Dealers. Throw in the liberalalization of U.S. politics, including the nascent Communists and finish with a most unusual look at Harry Truman, and you have a very intoxicating look at the first half of the century.

    For Churchill fans
This book is very well written and narrated, but its subject matter is a bit narrow in appeal. It details the final years of Churchill's life. As a Churchill admirer, I enjoyed the book and felt it was a way of spending time in the presence of the great man WSC was. You will learn about people around WSC and more about the issues of the day, but there are no bright new insights into his character.
The author is a very literate and amusing guy, who only occasionally uses this forum to settle political scores. Two strikes against this book are: 1) the first quarter is about the author prior to his association with Churchill. That may not appeal to everyone but I liked that part. 2) This is perhaps the WORST sound editing I have ever heard in an audio book. Things go along fine for a stretch and then there's duplicate lines, long pauses, repeated words, etc. It's as if no one bothered to listen to the final audio product and correct the many recording errors. I don't know how to rate this defect, The narration, by the author's nephew, is very good, the story is interesting, and the book overall is fine. But if there were a category for "sound editing", I would give one star.
    Fasting Account
Anthony Montague Brownes account of his career and the twilight years ofSir Winston Churchill is well written and full of interesting observations and anecdotes. The book brings the reader (listener) into the intimate fold of Churchills life. John Milligans narration is perfect and is a worthy complement to the book.
