    Publisher's Summary:
Demonstrating Woody Allen's magical math equation (comedy = tragedy + time), here is a sensational collection of witty essays about life, love, hate, kids, work, school, and more from the author of The Ex-Mrs. Hedgefund and Arm Candy.
Jill Kargman is a mother, wife, and writer living the life in New York City... a life that includes camping out in a one-bedroom apartment with some unfortunate (and furry) roommates, battling the Momzillas of Manhattan, and coming to terms with her desire for gay men. In this entertaining collection of observations, Kargman offers her unique, wickedly funny perspective as she zips around Manhattan with three kids in tow.
Kargman tackles issues big and small with sharp wit and laugh-out-loud humor: her love of the smell of gasoline, her new names for nail polishes, her adventures in New York City real estate, and her fear of mimes, clowns, and other haunting things.
Whether it's surviving a family road trip or why she can't stand Cirque du So Lame, living with a mommy vagina the size of the Holland Tunnel, or surviving the hell that was her first job out of college, Kargman's nutty self triumphs, thanks to a wonderfully wise outlook and sense of fun that makes the best of everything that gets thrown her way. And if that's not enough, Kargman illustrates her reflections with doodles that capture her refreshing voice.

    Publisher's Summary:
Two Years Before the Mast is a book by the American author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., written after a two-year sea voyage starting in 1834 and published in 1840.
While at Harvard College, Dana had an attack of the measles that affected his vision. Thinking it might help his sight, Dana, rather than going on a Grand Tour as most of his fellow classmates traditionally did (and unable to afford it anyway), and being something of a nonconformist, he left Harvard to enlist as a common sailor on a voyage around Cape Horn on the brig Pilgrim. He returned to Massachusetts two years later aboard the Alert (which left California sooner than the Pilgrim). He kept a diary throughout the voyage, and, after returning, he wrote a book based on his experiences.
Recognized as an American classic, Two Years Before the Mast was published the same year that Dana was admitted to the bar.
    Members Reviews:
    Great Historical Account
The one piece of advice I would offer if you intend on listening to this book is to download a sail plan of a early 19th century brig. Dana's descriptions are so frequent and detailed that if you don't familiarize yourself with it, most of it will be meaningless. I gave it three stars for that reason alone. Other than that there are some fascinating parts and stories contained in this book. Many great descriptions of early California. All in all a good listen.
A Memorable Adventure From the Past
This is a true life adventure of two years of the life of an American sailor in the 1830's. This is an American classic that that I feared might be dull and monotonous. Instead it was a lively tale of travel and danger.
The author was a student in Boston who developed problems with his eyes and could not pursue his studies. He decided to sign on as a jack tar sailor on a ship bound for California round the horn. Living a sailor's life for two years.
The life of a sailor was hard labor day and night. The moments of adventure and drama were interspersed between long periods of the boring, confined life of a sailor aboard ship. Many of his diary entries read "The same." The author's ship, The Pilgrim, was engaged in the hide trade. A long trip around Cape Horn brought them to California. Once there they traveled up and down the coast from San Diego to San Francisco swapping trade goods for cattle hides. The reader is given a trip to a foreign country as he reads about the author's travels. In Mexican California status was based on the color of your skin. At the bottom were the Indians who provided the labor for the white skinned descendants of the Spanish conquerors. The Castilian dialect was cultivated as another sign of status. The coastline and the desert were the landscape of the author's travels. The author rode everywhere he went in California. They had very many horses and they would ride them at a gallop and when they were tired stop and pick up fresh horses. The rush of the wind atop a running horse with the smell of the sea in the air was one of many invigorating images contained in the book.
The author quickly learned the Spanish language and had many stories to tell of the people of California. As a sailor he mingled with the laboring class and became particularly attached to the kanakas. These were people from the Sandwich Islands/Hawaii. The kanakans were susceptible to illnesses common in the white population.

Length: 9 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-22-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Few people who have been slave to an addiction as vicious, as destructive, and as unrelenting as Colin Broderick's have lived to tell their tale. Fewer still have emerged from the darkest depths of alcoholism - from the perpetual fistfights and muggings, car crashes and blackouts - to tell the harrowing truth about the modern Irish immigrant experience.
Orangutan is the story of a generation of young men and women in search of identity in a foreign land, both in love with and at odds with the country they've made their home. So much more than just another memoir about battling addiction, Orangutan is an odyssey across the unforgiving terrain of 1980s, '90s, and post-9/11 America. Whether he is languishing in the boozy squalor of the Bronx, coke-fueled and manic on the streets of Manhattan, chasing Hunter S. Thompson's American Dream from San Francisco to the desert, or turning the South into his beer-soaked playground, Broderick plainly and unflinchingly charts what it means to be Irish in America, and how the grips of heritage can destroy a man's soul. But brutal though Orangutan may be, it is ultimately a story of hope and redemption.... It is the story of an Irish drunk unlike any you've met before.
    Critic Reviews:
"For its unflinching depiction of alcoholism and lack of self-pity, this memoir of addiction will find its place alongside the writings of fellow epic drinker Charles Bukowski." (Booklist)
"Colin Broderick has that magic touch that allows him to mix comedy and tragedy in just the right proportionsClear, cleanly written, forward-moving, andbest of allvibrantly alive." (Billy Collins)
"His book is part grail quest, part cautionary tale and part rollicking Irish emigrants adventure story. What makes it remarkable is that he manages to snatch a victory out of near impossible odds. This book is written in blood, it deserves to become a classic." (Irish Voice)

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
An inspiring account of America at its worst - and Americans at their best - woven from the stories of Depression-era families who were helped by gifts from the author's generous and secretive grandfather.
Shortly before Christmas 1933, in Depression-scarred Canton, Ohio, a small newspaper ad offered $10, no strings attached, to 75 families in distress. Interested readers were asked to submit letters describing their hardships to a benefactor calling himself Mr. B. Virdot. The author's grandfather, Sam Stone, was inspired to place this ad and assist his fellow Cantonians as they prepared for the cruelest Christmas most of them would ever witness.
Moved by the tales of suffering and expressions of hope contained in the letters, which he discovered in a suitcase 75 years later, Ted Gup initially set out to unveil the lives behind them, searching for records and relatives all over the country who could help him flesh out the family sagas hinted at in those letters. From these sources, Gup has re-created the impact that Mr B. Virdot's gift had on each family. Many people yearned for bread, coal, or other necessities, but many others received money from B. Virdot for more fanciful items: a toy horse, say, or a set of encyclopedias. As Gup's investigations revealed, all these things had the power to turn people's lives around- even to save them.
But as he uncovered the suffering and triumphs of dozens of strangers, Gup also learned that Sam Stone was far more complex than the lovable retiree persona he'd always shown his grandson. Gup unearths deeply buried details about Sam's life - from his impoverished, abusive upbringing to felonious efforts to hide his immigrant origins from U.S. officials - that help explain why he felt such a strong affinity to strangers in need.

The Story of My Hometown Before Me
As a businessman whose company barely, and perhaps should not have, survived the Great Recession of 2007 - 2010+, I could feel some kinship to many of the stories told by some of the people in this narrative, but I most likely would have passed on listening this book had the setting been different. The fact that these stories took place in my hometown of Canton, Ohio made it impossible to not listen to it. I am so glad I did not miss this book. For a Canton native it is a must to hear the stories of strife and struggle of our city before, during and after the Great Depression. I know for a fact that my parents, as young pre teens in Canton during these times, went through the same struggles as those who wrote the letters contained in this history of the city. I grew hearing a few a the stories of depression and subsequent war years and going to bed without food for supper. We as kids, as contrast, never went to bed hungry as my parents vowed to always have food in the house and on the table. Their memories of their childhood in the early years must have driven them to make this so. So for me this story was poignant on numerous levels that, before reading this wonderland book, I did not take the time to appreciate.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 26 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The searing accounts of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Evgeniia Ginsberg, and Varlam Shalamov opened the world's eyes to the terrors of the Soviet Gulag. But not until now has there been a memoir of life inside the camps written from the perspective of an actual employee of the Secret police. In this riveting memoir, superbly translated by Deborah Kaple, Fyodor Mochulsky describes being sent to work as a boss at the forced labor camp of Pechorlag in the frozen tundra north of the Arctic Circle.
Only 22 years old, he had but a vague idea of the true nature of the Gulag. What he discovered was a world of unimaginable suffering and death, a world where men were starved, beaten, worked to death, or simply executed. Mochulsky details the horrific conditions in the camps and the challenges facing all those involved, from prisoners to guards. He depicts the power struggles within the camps between the secret police and the communist party, between the political prisoners (most of whom had been arrested for the generic crime of "counter-revolutionary activities") and the criminal convicts. And because Mochulsky writes of what he witnessed with the detachment of the engineer that he was, readers can easily understand how a system that destroyed millions of lives could be run by ordinary Soviet citizens who believed they were advancing the cause of socialism.
Mochulsky remained a communist party member his entire life - he would later become a diplomat - but was deeply troubled by the gap between socialist theory and the Soviet reality of slave labor and mass murder. This unprecedented memoir takes readers into that reality and sheds new light on one of the most harrowing tragedies of the 20th century.
    Members Reviews:
A very interesting "other point of view"
We have read a lot about Gulag, Kolyma, and so on. But never i had a chance to "see" the facts from the point of view of somebody who was standing on the "other side" of the fence. It has been a very interesting experience for me.
    interesting and well read.
This is an interesting and well written book. It shows a part of history we have read from solzhenitsyn's point of view. This goes deeper into showing the lives of those in charge of reaching goals, getting teams to work and more.
Well narrated and a pleasant audio book with a few interesting passages.
    Disappointment
Would you try another book from Feodor Vasilievich Mochulsky and Deborah Kaple (translator) and/or Chris Patton?
    No
Has Gulag Boss turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was quite naive to expect real stories from the Gulag Boss perspective.
In this book is very little about life in the Zone. Only the afterword, explain the way of thinking of author. You will never find the truth, from the person responsible for terror. He was one of the cog in the machine of terror. However, without those cogs, machine wouldnt be able to run.

    Publisher's Summary:
Carlos Eire's story of a boyhood uprooted by the Cuban Revolution quickly lures us in, as 11-year-old Carlos and his older brother, Tony, touch down in the sun-dappled Miami of 1962 - a place of daunting abundance where his old Cuban self must die to make way for a new, American self waiting to be born.
In this enchanting new work, narrated in Eire's inimitable and lyrical voice, young Carlos adjusts to life in his new country. He lives for a time in a Dickensian foster home, struggles to learn English, attends American schools, and confronts the age-old immigrant's plight: surrounded by the bounty of this rich land yet unable to partake. Carlos must learn to balance the divide between his past and present lives and find his way in this strange new world of gas stations, vending machines, and sprinkler systems.
Every bit as poignant, bittersweet, and humorous as his first memoir, Learning to Die in Miami is a moving personal saga, an elegy for a lost childhood and a vanished country, and a celebration of the spirit of renewal that America represents.

A MUST READ BY ALL PEDRO PAN KIDS
Would you consider the audio edition of Learning to Die in Miami to be better than the print version?
I have not read the print version. Cannot opine.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Carlos. He told his story which was almost my story and the story of most kids who were sent by our parents to the US at the beginning of the Revolution.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When they went to the Country Club in Miami. As a child I also went to that club and it brought back many many memories.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. It made me both laugh and cry. It reminded us of the great sacrifice our parents made for us and it also made me thankful that they did.
    Any additional comments?
I can't wait till Carlos writes another book. He is a great story teller.
Excellent memoir of a forgotten time in history
My book club read this book, thinking we would be familiar with the topic since we live in south Florida and have many friends and coworkers with Cuban roots, but this memoir told a different story than anything we had heard before. Sure, we had heard of the "Pedro Pan" airlift which "saved" lots of kids from Castro's Cuba, but this first-person account was nothing like the glib news releases we had heard years ago. The author tells about his experience as one of over 14,000 children, mostly boys, who were flown to Miami from Cuba between 1960 and 1962. Each was told that their parents would be following shortly afterwards, but in most cases, this was not possible. These kids relied on the kindness of distant relatives in the U.S., former friends or neighbors of their parents, and in one compelling part of this story, an unrelated Jewish family who could relate to losing one's home country. A loose network of social workers, foster parents, and church officials oversaw the welfare of the kids until the parents were able to join them some years later. Carlos Eire tells what it was like to be one of these children.

Julie Klam was 30, single, and working as a part-time clerk in an insurance company, wondering if she would ever meet the man she could spend the rest of her life with. And then it happened. She met the irresistible Otto, her first in a long line of Boston terriers, and fell instantly in love.
You Had Me at Woof is the often hilarious and always sincere story of how one woman discovered life's most important lessons from her relationships with her canine companions. From Otto, Julie realized what it might feel like to find "the one". She learned to share her home, her heart, and her limited resources with another, and she found an authentic friend in the process. But that was just the beginning. Over the years, her brood has grown to one husband, one daughter, and several Boston terriers. And although she had much to learn about how to care for them - walks at 2 a.m., vet visits, behavior problems - she was surprised and delighted to find that her dogs had more wisdom to convey to her than she had ever dreamed. And caring for them has made her a better person - and completely and utterly opened her heart.
Riotously funny and unexpectedly poignant, You Had Me at Woof recounts the hidden surprises, pleasures, and revelations of letting any mutt, beagle, terrier, or bulldog go charging through your world.
    Critic Reviews:
"A funny, wise and moving account of being dragged into reluctant adulthood by a pack of abandoned Boston terriers. It didn't just make me laugh - it also, I'll confess, made a grown man cry." (Ken Foster, author of

    Enjoyed the audio version..
This book is about the journey of being a dog owner and rescue person. I own 4 dogs myself and dog sit for another. 4 out of 5 are also Boston's. I could really relate to the Author. What I liked about this book is that the stories are true and heartfelt. They made me laugh and cry. What I really liked is how the book shows how important it is to be a responsible pet owner and how much our pets need us. I recomend this book for all dog lovers but especially for someone considering getting their first dog.
    dog lover in virginia
The title is titilating, but I had to stop listening after the first two hours. I couldn't take the obsessiveness of the character, the fact the dog dies without any reference to its aging or demise. The author then launches into her marriage and having kids. It made it hard to follow or stay engaged.
    Fell in love with Boston's
What did you love best about You Had Me at Woof?
I'm a bully-breed mom, but listening to this made me miss my French Bulldog, and actually fall in love with the smush-faced breeds all over again. I really related to the author, and felt that if she wasn't in NYC, she could be me!
    Which scene was your favorite?
SPOILER ALERT: The moment she realized that she truly loved Dahlia was heart warming. It takes dogs for so many of us to figure out many aspects of our lives, and seeing her realize that age isn't the end of the world was just wonderful.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were times sitting in my car that I'd be stuck in traffic and just start weeping. I felt what the author felt, and I laughed and cried hard more than once!
    Any additional comments?
Highly recommended to any dog lover.

    Publisher's Summary:
A groundbreaking and inspiring exploration of the unique relationship between dogs and humans, from the best-selling author of Dogs Never Lie About Love.
Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson has long been interested in the relationships between humans and animals, and hes always been aware that there was something very special in our bond with dogs. No other animals love us in quite the same way as dogs love us. And it is mutual. Is it possible that we developed our capacity for love, sympathy, empathy, and compassion because of our long association with dogs?
In The Dog Who Couldnt Stop Loving, Masson considers the far-reaching consequences of the coevolution of dogs and humans, drawing upon recent scientific research. Over the past forty thousand years a collective domestication has occurred that brings us to where we are today - humans have formed intense bonds with dogs, and the adoration is almost always reciprocal. Masson himself has experienced a profound bond with his new dog, Benjy, a failed guide dog for the blind, who possesses an abundance of uninhibited love. Masson knows that the love he feels for Benjy - the same feeling Benjy has for all the people and animals around him - is not unique, but exemplifies a love affair unmatched in the animal world.
With wisdom, insight, and a brilliant analysis of recent scientific findings, bestselling author Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson delivers a provocative and compelling book that will change the way we think about love and our canine companions.

Who Loved First and How Did We Learn?
This book made me remember the dogs of my childhood in a different way and appreciate the dogs I have had in my life as an adult. How can we ever give our dogs as much love as they give us? I don't care if they were once friendly wolves who taught us to care for one another or if some of our ancestors just made friends with the wolves. I appreciate what we have been given in companionship, in loyalty, in protection, and in emotional growth. The author made it obvious that his dogs made his life more than it could have ever been without them. This book was not what I expected, but it made me think and understand some things I had never before considered. It was definitely worth reading.
If you have a dog you'll like this book
This is a thoughtful, insightful look at the mechanics of why dogs love humans and humans reciprocate. It's a bit clinical at times and I had hoped for more information on what in retrospect seem maybe trivial such as "when a dog does (this) it means (that), when it (does something else) it means (something else). The thought was to be able to interpret dog facial expressions, head position, body position etc. as a look at what the animal was contemplating.
That said, it was a pleasant read and one that stirs emotions, especially if one has dogs that have gone on to the Rainbow Bridge
This is written like a scholarly paper
This is written like a scholarly paper. It tells about the author's personal dog but in many ways like it is a test subject instead of a pet. Much of the author's thoughts are based on the evolutionary theory. I am a creationist and so disagree with some of his thoughts. The premise of the book is proving the dogs are capable of the emotion of love.
