I'm a big comedy fan and a big SNL fan and I think Tom Davis has never gotten the exposure he should. I was very happy to finally get to know him a bit.

Frustrating but worth persevering with.

Julian Barnes fails to define what the nature of this book is and therein lies it's strength - as well as the sheer frustration I felt when I finished it. It is neither an autobiography nor a novel but more like the reminiscences of an old friend (and as a reader of all of his books thus far, he feels very much like an old friend) over the course of a good meal and bottle of wine.

Early on I was rather irritated by the way in which he fails to define the terms on which he is writing. Why his atheism/agnosticism? Why not "stand up and be counted" and give rational scientific reasons for his stance? Does he even know why he has the attitudes he has?

I gradually realised that many of our conversations have a logic of their own and listening to Julian Barnes reading his own work had a rationale that goes beyond face value. Yes, he fails to give a reason for why he thinks as he does; often I want to shout "justify that" or "explain yourself". But that's not what it's about nor came to realise is what satisfies. As Patrick Kavanagh says in his poem Advent, "Through a chink too wide there comes in no wonder". The book isn't meant to give all the answer - what it did for me is make me ask myself the same question and try to answer it for myself.

No, I don't agree with everything he said (or indeed most of it). But I like the way he says it and that's the attraction of the book.

Get it, listen to it and engage with him. Whether or not you agree with it isn't the point. It's not the best introduction (by a long shot) to the work of Julian Barnes but it is a great insight to all that he has written thus far.

Not to be avoided

A heavily laden listen-almost always consisting of fine ingredients for a banquet. There is no time throughout this listen that the close reader does not feel compelled to reply, to react, to smile or to laugh. Most times, quite uninvited, my mind would respond with a memory, a thought, a difference of opinion.

How consistently a fine writer can stimulate a reader to reflect on such deeply held views...marvelous.

Most insensitively, I kept wondering how this gentleman might have reconsidered this memoir? this fiction? in the light of the sad death of a much loved partner.

Guess I will have to re-listen to "Levels of Life," and be moved again ( as I remember so doing) by the fierce compassion and truth this author evokes from himself-and us.

10 hours about DEATH!

The content is in discord with the title. When audible said "before you go" at the end seeking my a rating I thought, for a moment that they were talking about death. It was a bit rambling but made me think.

The Prize at the end of a Long Struggle

I just read Chris Coste's autobiography from 2009 "The 33 Year Old Rookie". It took me two days and the 220 pages just flew by.

This is the Ultimate Underdog story and I wouldn't be surprised if someone turns it into a movie.

Coste grew up raised by his mother, a single parent and never knew his father. He came from Fargo, North Dakota, not exactly a BASEBALL HOTBED OR AN AREA THAT IS SCOUTED HEAVILY. He went undrated out of tiny Concordia College as a senior in 1995. The first independent league he played for folded about two months later. He was able to catch on with a more established Independent League the following year,The Northern League, and played for the Fargo-Moorehead Red Hawks for the next four years, where he learned to become a catcher (he had been a third baseman and pitcher in college) and sold ads on outfield walls, ads for programs, and hosted a sports talk radio show to supplement his income in the off-season.

He finally got into organized baseball in 2000 at age 27. Although he never played at any level below AA, Coste was trapped in the high minors for the next six plus years and often bypassed and overlooked by the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox front offices in favor of highly paid high draft choices that teams "were invested in". Even the team he reached the majors with, the Philadelphia Phillies overlooked him at first. In 2005, his first year with the Phillies organization, Coste had an excellent year finishing with 20 home runs, 89 RBI and a .292 batting average, but that still didn't earn him a September callup to the majors. After a tremedous Spring Training in '06, where by all accounts he had hit about .475 that Spring, played great defensively, and should have earned a spot on the 2006 Opening Day Phillies roster, Coste found himself back with the Phillies Scranton-Wilkes Barre AAA affiliate to start the season.

His ascent to the majors that May is certainly a joyous occasion as Coste recounts the moment he "got "The Call" and his first week with the team. By the time Coste reached the majors he was 33 with a wife and two daughters.

MMA Bible

I first became aware of this book watching Mike Straka of the FoxNews Fight Game interview the author. The book is a well covered glimpse at MMA and the most notable promotion, UFC from infancy to it's current status in global culture.

As an added bonus the book also does well to tell the tale of one of the toughest fighters in MMA history, Pat Miletich of Bettendorf, Iowa.

It was a thrill to listen to and had the entire book polished off in few short days. If you like the UFC or MMA in general this is a perfect book to better understand the history of the sport and the fighters that made it what it is today.

What made the experience of listening to Blood in the Cage the most enjoyable?

I'm a fan of MMA and I've watched the sport evolve into what it is today. I knew of Pat Millitech as a smart fighter and world class trainer, but I didn't know much about his personal background. Very inspiring story. It's always nice to hear about someone who faces tragedy and adversity, and winds up living to see a happy ending.

Who was your favorite character and why?

**SPOILER ALERT**

The guy who tried to back Pat down in a bar fight by claiming to be Pat Milliech. Also, funny to hear a semi-official version of the Gene LeBell vs Steven Segal story. I've heard so many versions of that story over the years.

Which character ??? as performed by Phil Gigante ??? was your favorite?

Gigante is a very good all-around reader, but he doesn't seem to know much about MMA or the characters. For some reason he gives Pat a southern accent and he pronounces a lot of names wrong or weird. Like pronouncing Bas Rutten as though he's a fresh water fish. ;-)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Great insight into mental illness

What made the experience of listening to Four Rooms, Upstairs the most enjoyable?

I think Linda Shapiro told her story well and showed remarkable insight into the world of mental illness. She did not preach or whine about it just wove it into her autobiography.

Who was your favorite character and why?

George. While George did not narrate this book, I have listened to him many times as the narrator of other books and he is one of the greatest narrators I have ever heard. Also Linda who had the grace to hold herself above the family problems.

Which scene was your favorite?

When they were in the theater and George was on stage. The mother had a funny albeit embarrassing reaction to the kissing scene.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book is not exactly time well spent, but it might be interesting to some in a sort of ho-hum way. There's really no surprises here, any first-year psychology student could come up with the same complaints about any disturbed parent, and I had the feeling Linda Shapiro should just get over it already!

Would you ever listen to anything by Linda Appleman Shapiro again?

I don't think I would listen to another book by this author, who seems to be to have a rather ordinary mind.

Which character as performed by Suzanne Toren was your favorite?

None of the characters are especially memorable, but there's some nostalgic interest in the descriptions of the old neighborhood, which I know well, and the old days, to which I also belong.

Was Four Rooms, Upstairs worth the listening time?

It was o.k. as entertainment, mild, inoffensive, but finally too predictable.

I heard lots of positive and some negative feedback on this book... it took me forever to decide to buy it, but I'm glad I did. Elizbeth Gilbert talks so well about the different phases she went through, and it's full of humor, emotion and insight. I am surprised this is abridged because parts of it were very detailed. I loved Gilbert's narration.

I loved this book when I read it and enjoyed it all over again hearing Elizabeth Gilbert read it herself. She brings the events and people even more to life.

Great book-for-girls!!! Amazing narration !

Bought this audiobook because I wanted to "read" the book before watching the movie. Honestly, the movie trailer was the reason I decided to read this best seller and I`m so glad it did. The story is sweet, I liked the way the author describes in an "earthling" language, her inner journey to God and Divinity but what I did enjoy from beginning to end was Elizabeth Gilbert's narration. She totally brought all characters to life and transmited all kinds of feelings toward them. It was so vivid, like having cofee with your best friend and hearing all about her vacations.

What a delight! Thank you Elizabeth for your amazing gift I was enthralled and like another compulsive addictive I couldn't stop listening. Your book is the second book I have listened to and I am hooked.

I recommend this book to all who want to get connected to themselves or simply want to feel good about themselves.

Carter is the man!

One of the funniest books I have read in ages. Was listening whilst driving in my car and at one stage literally had to pull over cause I was laughing so hard!

The author is the narrator so it really is like being at a party listening to his story!

Funniest book ever!

This book is hilarious. My mum had heard Paul Carter read exerpts of this book live and had said how good he was. I thought "yeah, yeah", but she was right. I had people looking at me strangely on the train because I kept laughing out loud. Not only is the book itself very well written with really funny with stories most people couldn't even make up, Paul is an excellent reader and puts on voices and accents to portray the characters and does this really well. Because he wrote it, he reads it with a familiarity that makes the story flow and sound like he's telling you his latest escapades over a beer. Seriously recommend this book.
