Perspective Altering

Very disappointing, description of book misleading

This book should be described more aptly as a sermon by a preacher's daughter---I don't doubt the depth of her pain but also wished I could get my money back as soon as I started listening--author even says the book is written for people that are at the crossroads in their lives--between life and despair. Like the earlier reviewer wrote--this is a pep rally for God.

a GOD book - on and on about god, faith, rah rah so unless you want to hear how no-one can live with out the strength of GOD in your life avoid the purchase of the book

Hackneyed delivery

Dick Hill, the narrator, delivers the book in a Saturday afternoon B-picture matinee voice that quickly becomes insufferable. His attempt to sound like an "authentic" wise guy or tough guy or hardboiled detective, etc, dissolves into unintentional parody. Hill is perfectly capable (as audio samples show) of producing a genuinely masculine reading that doesn't depend on shtick; what a disappointment he didn't do so in this case.

Explains the Inexplicable

This book is an unflinching account of the author's descent into addiction. I have an addicted loved one, and despite reading book upon book about the disease of addiction I could still not get my head around how someone could allow himself to reach such depths without ever reaching out for help. This book shows, with horrifying clarity, the urgency to get one more high, the escalating paranoia, the desperation of the addict's loved ones, and the utter futility of trying to apply reason to this disease.

Thank you, Mr. Clegg, for giving us "civilians" a glimpse of how active addiction distorts a person's thinking, destoys his hope, and steals his life.

Like other reviewers, I wanted to hear more about Mr. Clegg's recovery but that is a different story.

Addict Drone

The book is a good read but the author should have had some one else read it, I think his narration is a but dull and drone like, Will come in handy if you have trouble falling asleep.

I took this because of the great reviews and indeed it's dramatic, compelling, horrifying and well told.

I really don't understand how the author can recall with such clarity and detail all his drug and drink binges, etc. Time, places, prices, restaurants, people....Is memory not obliterated by these activities?

Interesting & Informative

I loved this book, including the quirky narrator, whose Aussie accent and intimacy are a perfect match for Vanessa Wood's story of falling in love with the bonobos of central Africa's Congo. Although I knew a bit about bonobos' matriarchal social structure and "make-love-not-war" approach to communal living, "Bonobo Handshake" not only deepened my knowledge, but made me care deeply about these remarkable members of the great ape family. Equally interesting are the author's descriptions of the Congo, which is the only place in the world where the endangered Bonobos live in the wild. It's rare to find a book that's both a good yarn and educational, and this one excels at all levels.

Here's a hint: it's not a "hand"shake!

This book will appeal to all who love real life adventure stories set in faraway, exotic places, particularly if the protagonist travels to do good works. The author is in Africa to study the little known Bonobo, almost identical looking to their primate cousins the Chimpanzee, but oh so different in several notable ways. Where Chimps are competitive and can be violent, Bonobos work together in peaceful groupings and use sexual contact for almost every type of emotion and communication, including with their human caregivers.

What a survivor!

I felt that after awhile it got repetive. The story was well written. That an insperation!

Very moving memoir

I bought this book several years ago--and just read it recently. The book kept me up at night reading it. I think Trisha is an excellent example of a truly awesome spirit. The book says on its cover a story of hope and possibility and that sums up how Trisha has decided to live her life. Thank you Trisha for the words I will try to live my life by. :)

Worth the Read

What a wonderful story! I had no idea the woman I have frequently seen in yoga over the years is the central park jogger. The straightforward writing style and tone in which she tells her story in no way diminishes the absolute horror of what she endured and the amazing will and determination she exhibits throughout her recovery. I am particularly interested in Trisha's unwavering belief that community prayer contributed to her healing and her subsequent calling to use her experience to help others. This story is a testament to not only the tenacity of the human spirit but also to the abundance of good in the world that never ceases to rise to the occasion.

Slow narration - I wish the author narrated more

The narrator plods at a deathly slow pace and painfully overannounciates every single thing... if only the author narrated more than just the introduction. At the time I bought this book they mistakenly listed the author as being the narrator, so I was doubly dissapointed to find that someone else picked up at the beginning of the book itself and continued throughout in this agonizing manner. I wish our software would let us adjust for a narrator's speed and pitch, to correct for such oversights of judgement. The book would have been great if the person who we have an interest in would have followed through and done the full narration, as has been the common routine for autobiographical audiobooks.

Happy to have found this book

I haven't finished this yet but it will take me a while (I'm listening in Spanish to learn the language better) and I wanted to write the review quickly. So far I'm really intrigued by this book. Anyone who has read "En el tiempo de las mariposas" should love this story as well-sad as it is-and it's amazing that there is actually an introduction by Dedé Miraba herself. I've listened to it over and over again and it's priceless. With as few great selections as there are in Spanish to listen to, I'm thrilled to have found this. Me encanta. Es precioso.

Taking steps toward healing with Thin Places

Would you consider the audio edition of Thin Places to be better than the print version?

Yes. Because Mary DeMuth reads her own story, it is that much more immediate and real, as if we are sitting at a table, talking over cups of coffee. As her story unfolds, I am transported to a thin placea place where I can get a glimpse of heaven, where I can see what its all about.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Thin Places?

When Mary is five years old, two neighborsbrothers who are boy scoutsrape her repeatedly. When she finally gets the courage to tell her babysitter, she thinks she will be safe. The abuse continues the very next day. Her babysitter never tells Marys mom, but little Mary thinks she has, which means she thinks her mom is okay with whats happening to her. It is only when her family moves away that that the abuse ends.

Her difficult childhood includes a mother who is divorced three times and a father who dies when she is ten. She is neglected and surrounded by drug abuse. Her mother cannot be trusted. She is an only child who hides in her room, making herself as small as possible so no one will notice her.

She tries very hard not to cause trouble or make any noise, hoping she will be loved.

In her youth, Mary is a people pleaser to the extreme, hiding her identity behind being the person she thinks others want her to be so she can be accepted and part of them.

When it comes time for boys to notice her, she alternately longs for their attention but is terrified of them.

I see myself in her as a teenager, then in collegedesperately longing for the attention of boys but utterly terrified at the prospect of getting close. Come close. Go away. Come close. Go away. That awful ambivalence.

She talks about having a mark. Once youve been abused, you have a mark on you that attracts other predators. She hopes the mark will go away after she gets married, but it doesnt.

What does Mary E. DeMuth bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Her own voice. The pain she's gone through, the lessons she's learned, the joy and hope she has because of her faith in Jesus Christ.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

As I look back over the past 20 years as an adult, at the choices Ive made, at the mistakes, at the relationships that have come and gone, Marys story ties things together for me in a long, cause-and-effect chain. Wonderful book

I enjoyed this audio book very much. I enjoy true crime. Here is a book written by a victim soon after the crime. It is well written and held my interest from start to finish. I don't think there is any book like it, giving all the details only an insider would know and so soon after the crime happened. It is riveting to hear the events that led up to the crime and the aftermath. Well written, nicely narrated, just all around excellent and gripping.

Outstanding reader

Maurice England did an outstanding job of reading this book. In itself, this book is a dramatic and compelling story of how faith overcomes tragedy. Maurice England made that story come alive.

Not your average true crime novel

This novel depicts a terrible event in one man's life but it is less a true crime novel than one man's spiritual journey. I would place it in Christianity, not true crime. It was interesting but extremely repetitive. Maurice England portrayed such emotion through the characters in this novel, he is a fabulous narrator.

If you do not like to hear about spiritual awakening, or Bible quotes this book is not for you.

Fascinating and Heartbreaking

Fascinating, inspiring story of one man's unthinkable tragedy,survival, and subsequent rebuilding of his life. Narration is excellent--couldn't have picked a better characterization. The only thing I would have changed was the placement of the interview of Terry Caffey at the beginning of the book. For those who are unfamiliar with his story (and I was), it tended to give away too much before the book actually started. It would have been better to have placed the interview at the conclusion of the narration. Other than that, an excellent listen.

A very sad story with a great ending. The narrator was perfect. A must hear book! Narrated with such feeling.
