A very unfortunate series of events...

The narrators voice was a great cast. It felt as if Mr. Everts was telling me his story himself. If I ever make it to Yellowstone I will remember be more prepared that Mr. Everts was.

we enjoyed this!

we were watching the Ken burns' national park series on PBS and they mentioned this book and so we got it and are very glad we did! amazing story of survival! and we really enjoyed all the extra stories about the rescue from other people's point of view.....this was our first audible book!

Having experience in cold weather climates, one of the amazing feats of survival in this story is how Truman Everts survived without the proper clothing. Today we are kept warm and healthy with all the technology of a manufactured environment. To be hungry for so long while having to think about making decisions for your own survival is very well described in this book. It is also amazing how he got lost in the first place, his horse wandered off, then he could not find the people he was with. Later on after he's discovered, and he recovers, we find he's somewhat of a disagreeable person. You have to wonder if his getting lost was not by accident from the others that he was with. If you like the outdoors, if you have ever been to Yellowstone and the surrounding country you will like reading this book.

Only passable

Story is great. A well-told narrative of an extraordinary event. Rated it it 2 stars because the narrator's overdramatized reading (as if to a small child) was so distracting that I almost gave up.

Very heartbreaking

This story was written very well and some parts are very hard to listen to, my face was cringing. On the other hand it has made me very curious about the war in Sudan, something I really hadn't known about until I read the book Slave, which led me to reading this book, I just can't believe that this is still going on today!!!

A story that takes you there

What made the experience of listening to Tears of the Desert the most enjoyable?

I truly felt as if I was Halima while reading this. I felt her emotions so much and saw the images she described. It was really amazing how real and raw it was.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Halima's dad seemed like a really great man. He was invested in his children and never looked down on Halima for being a girl, but helped her pursue her dreams. He was very loving and caring. I truly appreciated hearing her fondness in her descriptions of him.

What about Rosalyn Landors performance did you like?

She just did a really beautiful job and had a soothing voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did a bit of both because there were a couple funny stories, but most were very sad, especially when you listen to her stories of how she was treated in school and buy those who went out to harm her in various ways. It broke my heart.

Any additional comments?

This book explains FGM and rape. It is not easy to handle, so beware that you will learn things that might really upset you and make you mad.

A Bit Slow

The story was interesting and enlightening. I had no knowledge of the horrrors that some people endured in Darfur. Halima Bashir relays the story of her journey through hell to freedom. Overall, I am glad to have read it, but found it a litte slow sometimes. It was not a book I couldn't put down.

Too much of the author's uninteresting story

There are bits that have interesting facts about aging but you have to sit through boring stories of the author's life in between the interesting points. I frankly don't care who he dated, stories of him going to ballgames with his dad, etc.

If you're looking for Humour, don't get this book!

For what I thought would be a humourous book, this turned out to not only be totally devoid of humour, but a somewhat graphic

(and depressing) discussion of the relentless progression of physiological issues we can expect as we age. As a member of the baby boomers, this is the LAST thing I want to hear!

Interesting but not Inspiring

Read this book if you are interested in how we age but not if you are looking to be inspired by the process. With some things in life I prefer the country lyrics "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then".

A book everyone needs to read!

I thought I knew something about ecology and whaling until I read this book. I didn't. I had no idea of how brutal whaling is and how much we've already damaged the oceans. But the author lays it out clearly. "Gripping" is kind of overused, but it's the word that comes to mind when I try to described this book. After finishing it, I looked up the Sea Shepherd web site and became a supporter. I hope other people will enjoy this book and perhaps also become supporters of Captain Watson's organization.

Fascinating

Heller recorded his impressions during a trip on the Farley Mowat. It's a sympathetic but not uncritical view of Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd. You get a much better idea of them than from the TV series. Very well read.

Yes, the narrator is truly terrible.

Sadly, no, I wouldn't recommend the audio version. I did, however, buy the paperback edition to give to a friend.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Whale Warriors?

The game of "chicken" the ship played with the Japanese. Even the narrator didn't ruin that.

Tripled my understanding of our economy

Never even took economics in school, but Greenspan talks about the economic history of America since he began his career after World War II. Fascinating even if you don't understand it all. Explains how capitalism really works, why it's the best system in the world so far, and what it is that keeps thirdworld countries so destitute (hint: unenforced property rights). The last chapter explains how gross domestic product is increasingly based on intellectual property rights, and what that means for our future.

Basics for wide audience

If you are not very familiar with macroeconomics and would like to know Alan Greenspan's take on economic forces, principals and issues of modern times, this is a great book. You will find plenty of historical examples, future projections as well as eloquently explained economic and political relationships and trends that shape our world as we know today. Just as interesting is the authors' opinion of many prominent public figures he met during his career.

The book is intended to be an "easy read" for an average reader, so do not expect it to be of much academic value or any in-depth research/analysis that can be used for, say, investment purposes.

The narration is excellent, arguments are persuasive and easy to follow, the amount of material covered is also quite substantial.

Ideally, I would suggest this book to an average voter who wants to understand the economic impact of various public policies. Policies like "more taxes for the rich", "more power to the unions", "deport immigrants", "erect a trade barrier with China", "freeze gasoline prices" not only have a profound economic impact (mostly negative) on everybody, but also have a long history of prior attempts that we can learn a lot from.

Lastly, as much as Greenspan tried not to come across this way, but he surely seems to be riding a rather high horse. His opinion of self-importance and self-righteousness could use a trim..

Not worth the time

I like Greenspan, but unfortunately this book is not worth the time. It's really two books in one, the first being a banal but amusing autobiography and the second an eye-lid dropping overview of the current economic state of the world.

Review

Overall a good book. I would have preferred to have Alan Greenspan read all the book himself instead of reading only the introduction. I found the book a little too long and self flattering. A touch of modesty would not hurt Alan Greenspan.

A deeper understanding

If you are curious what it takes to be an economic leader, this is your book. If you wish you could understand economics and why particular decisions are made based on that information, this is your book. If you question the ability of Alan Greenspan, this book will give tremendous insight to his capabilities, and what his limitations within the structure of the Fed and government were. He was an extremely important man and worked in some capacity in government from Nixon to Bush Jr. He also gives perspective of what may happen over the next 20 years, and why. If you like economics as they relate to politics, get it.

Outstanding

This is an outstanding book. Everyone in business and government should read/listen to this work. The topics covered are essential. The reader does a great job. I have been through it 3 times already.

Excellent insight into the U.S economic structure

Mr. Greenspan has made what should be a dead boring topic into an interesting journey through the ups and downs of the American market economy.

He also gives, with excellent wit and accute observation, insight into some of the biggest "movers and shakers" in US politics and business in the last half century.

This is great view behind the facade of Washington politics and Wall Street wheeling and dealing into what REALLY keeps the wheels turning in the American economy.

Good balance between the man and his craft

The book offers just the right balance between reading about Greenspan the man and his profession. It was interesting to read about him without sensationalizing his life and hearing about embarrassing events. The more 'technical' part of the book was good too, it never got too complicated and boring. I think the book did a really good job showing how Greenspan's work was his life - how he lives (lived) this stuff.

Healing words

What a delight this book is, from beginning to end! All of the stories are simple and wonderful; told by the author in his soothing, smiling and knowing voice. Robert Fulghum states in one of his essays that he wishes he could have spent time with his grandfather--I wish Robert Fulghum WAS my grandfather! Instead, I am inspired to look about more closely in my world, to see if I can spot the wonder, humor and softness so often hidden behind the unescapable war, trauma and nonsense which crowd the headlines. If the author is not an official Zen master, he's certainly one in my mind--and my newest hero. I am grateful that I stumbled across this book. Should you, like me, be looking for something to soothe your ragged souls, you will find solace here. A sheer delight in every way!

Inspirational

This audiobook, as with all of Robert Fulghum's works, leaves the listener with a sense of inspiration and hope. His stories are so much more than stories. They are deep teachings masterfully disguised as simple stories. You can never go wrong reading or listening to anything created by this wonderful, amazing man.

Amazing outlook on very simple things

life's biggest lessons from such simple things as watching a sunrise to working of a round mirror ... from a janitor's right thing to do to simply eating a chair to a father's Christmas gift... thanks for the such a awesome book... it was very good listening.. though the stories may make you cry....

An enjoyable good listen

I thoroughly enjoy listening to Robert Fulghum essays and short stories. I find them meaningful, fun, and wholesome. A wonderful collection of thoughtful and inspirational works that are heartfelt jem's.

Memories

As always I love Robert Fulghum. His unique thoughts and commentary on his world and the things and the people he comes in contact with make me stop and appreciate some else's point of view. This is my first audio book. I chose it specifically because it was Fulghum's and he was the narrator. I was doing a lot of long distance driving and I needed something like a conversation I could follow. What better than the man with "uncommon thoughts on common things"? He sounded just as I imagined, like someone I could sit down with and have wonderfully long conversations. Someone I could while away with about nothing, anything, and everything.

Spellbinding

I wasn't paying attention when I purchased this book. I thought I was getting one of those true crime tomes done by authors like Anne Rule. Nothing wrong with that, but what this book is is so much more.

Once I got past the initial shock of hearing about the author's childhood (not something I thought I was interested in), I settled into what turned out to be a thrilling read. This book is really about that thing in us that allows intelligent, educated and giving individuals to settle for less in love than we deserve. It happens to both sexes and this book is clearly dealing with the subject in depth.

I think the author, Janine Latus, is a genius in coming to relate the horror of her own marriage, the murder of her younger sister and the pain caused by this inability to get out of what surely are horrific relationships.

I don't think I've learned as much from a book in recent years. This is a spellbinding search for our real souls.

Message Lost in Delivery

Such a great opportunity to get a strong message "out there" lost in borderline narcissism. Sigh. Would feel better if Janine had spent less time belaboring the point that they BOTH made bad choices in men (thanks, dad) and more time telling what she's learned. It would turn this from whiny to redemptive! Great narrator, tho!

Very quick listen

Overall the story was well told and the narrator-decent. It was quick and easy to follow along with but just not that intersting in my opinion.

Amazing

This book truly moved me and I plan on buying a copy to circulate between my sisters and my friends.

gritty and short

the descriptions of the atrocities in Bosnia and Croatia revealed a piece of darkest hell on Earth. more of a series of vignettes then an overarching story. Not much context of the situation in that area of the world was given . powerful, Too Short powerful, too short, and the voice acting was occasionally off point, but otherwise quite effective. recommended for the inside it provides into the often-overlooked Baltic Wars and overlooked real life of mercenaries
