    Title: West Dickens Avenue
Subtitle: A Marine at Khe Sanh
    Author: John Corbett
    Narrator: Eric Conger
    Format: Abridged
Length: 2 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-20-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In January 1968, the 26th Marine Regiment was ordered to a place in the far northwest corner of South Vietnam called Khe Sanh. John Corbett, an untested replacement in a clean, green uniform, and his fellow leathernecks were responsible for building and defending the combat base, and holding positions on the strategic hills overlooking the Ho Chi Minh Trail as it crossed into Laos and South Vietnam from nearby North Vietnam.
Only days after Corbett arrived at Khe Sanh, some twenty thousand North Vietnamese soldiers surrounded the base, outnumbering the American Marines seven to one. What followed over the next seventy-seven days became one of the deadliest fights of the Vietnam War - and one of the greatest battles in military history.
Private First Class Corbett, an ammo humper in an 81mm mortar section, made do with little or no sleep for days on end. The enemy bombarded the base incessantly, and Corbetts mortars returned the fire, day and night. Extremes of heat, cold, and fog added to the misery, as did all manner of wounds and injuries too minor to justify evacuation from frontline positions. The emotional toll was tremendous as the Marines saw their friends suffer and die every day of the siege. Corbett relates these experiences through the eyes of an eighteen year old but with the mind and maturity of a man now in his fifties. His story of life, death, and growing up on the front lines at Khe Sanh speaks for all of the Marines caught up in the epic siege of the Vietnam War.
    Critic Reviews:
REMARKABLE... This story, made even more poignant by todays headlines, can stand shoulder to shoulder with the handful of classic accounts of Marines under fire. (Flint Journal)
"In this short, readable account, Corbett describes his days at Khe Sanh in almost dispassionate prose and in great detail.... effectively convey[ing] the siege from a Marine grunts point of view. (Publishers Weekly)

    A Marine at Khe Sanh
An enjoyable book. I was at Khe Sanh only later in the War. It was during Lam Son 719 & Dewey Canyon ll. The discription of the airstrip and the surrounding hills is all very true. Khe Sanh is like being a fish in a barrel. The only difference is who is looking into that barrel from the surrounding hills. The Marines and anyone there caught hell from the surrounding hills if we did not control them. I enjoyed this book as it brought back alot of memories both good and bad.

Length: 10 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Just when the medical profession had given up on me and I on it, just when I seemed to be walled up in a life sentence of chronic pain, someone proposed a bizarre way out: sit still, they said, and breathe...
TEACH US TO SIT STILL is the visceral, thought-provoking and improbably entertaining story of Tim Parks' quest to overcome ill health. Bedevilled by a crippling condition which nobody could explain or relieve, he confronts hard truths about the relationship between the mind and the body, the hectic modern world and his life as a writer. Following a fruitless journey through the conventional medical system he finds solace in an improbable prescription of breathing exercises that eventually leads him to take up meditation. This was the very last place Parks expected or wanted to find answers; anything New Age simply wasn't his scene.
Meantime, he is drawn to consider the effects of illness on the work of other writers, the role of religions in shaping our sense of self, and the influence of sport and art in our attitudes to health and well-being. Most of us will fall ill at some point; few will describe that journey with the same verve, insight and radiant intelligence as Tim Parks. Captivating and inspiring, TEACH US TO SIT STILL is an intensely personal - and brutally honest - story for our times. SHORTLISTED FOR THE WELLCOME TRUST BOOK PRIZE FOR MEDICINE IN LITERATURE.

    Tim Parks - Skeptic extraordinaire!
Tim Parks, was so open about his beliefs and experiences. The fact that he could look past his self taught skepticisms and the beauty he allowed into his life, when questioning his reality, he undergoes a new perspective on his life and even his lifestyle choice. He wasn't afraid to talk about his prostate problems and does go into some amount of detail to the fact. I could however look past that, as in the later chapters it gets less medical reference and more, Tim Parks.
It was interesting to hear a skeptics criticisms and lack of belief in many alternative practices. I loved the transformation he underwent as he delved into his body and learned how to love himself, and not in that wavy new age style but essentially grounded.
It helped me see the beauty in everyone and how the childhood holds so much angst and emotional weight to us. It also helped me to be even more open to the notion that pain is not my own and that it is an experience that we can learn so much from.
    Naval gazing rubbish
I kept listening to this book expecting some wisdom or revelation. It didn't happen. I've only kept listening because I was driving but no way would I recommend this book to anyone.

    Title: Looking Through a Keyhole
    Author: Julia Spencer
    Narrator: Diana Andrade
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-05-12
    Publisher: Brook Forest Voices
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Julia Spencer takes the reader into her dreams, her fears, her hopes, her deepest private thoughts, and her most candid responses to her shrinking visual world. With humor and a feisty yet surprisingly gentle attitude, she begins to accept vision loss, welcoming her guide dog, Irene, into her life and discovering through that keyhole-sized remnant of vision a deeper understanding of her husband and family and world. The confines of her vision loss cannot restrain the vibrant energy and independence of this remarkable woman. Anyone struggling with a life altering condition will find this story inspiring and motivating.
    Members Reviews:
Intense, clear and unself-pitying memior of change
With a refreshingly painful honestly, Jullia Spencer (please note error above - this is NOT the same person as Julia Spencer-Fleming) interweaves her past into her present as she clearly describes the twists, turns and changes that come into her life as she comes to grips with hereditary visual loss.
The narrator is exceptional as the prose flows through and around all those incidents of daily life that define a person and her place in the world. This is not so much a story about a woman becoming blind (ok, visually impaired) and reclaiming her independence with the aid of a seeing eye dog as it is an exploration of what one values and on what grounds you choose to claim as yours.
The way we see ourselves is the way other see us
Who was your favorite character and why?
Julia, obviously, but the others in her world - her husband, children, grandchildren, trainers at the Seeing Eye... Many of the characters who populate her world are kind and understanding, and wrestle with the implications of vision loss. As someone who has been visually impaired all her life, I can relate surprisingly well to a woman who led a full primarily-sighted life into her fifties. Some of her comments and self-discoveries hvae taken some of my own questions, filed away the jagged edges, and given me my own perspectives and questions.
Have you listened to any of Diana Andrades other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't. She was a wonderful narrator choice. Another reviewer has stated that it was like having Julia Spencer narrate her own thoughts to me, and I echo that sentiment.
    Any additional comments?
I loved the descriptions of guide dog training. Having lived it myself, I could relate immensely to it, but I found that it took over almost 1/3 of the book, which was quite a bit longer than necessary. Beyond that, this book was a great look at vision loss... but it's more than that.

    Outstanding courage
If ever feel that your own life is falling apart or you don't know how to carry on or simply just want a bit of soul searching then this true life eventful account of one outstanding show of courage and bravery is a must read! If someone can pull through such pain and life changing features whilst still wearing a beautiful smile and laughing through the tears then so can we all. One truly inspirational young lady.
    You are beautiful, Katie.
A marvellous book with sorrow, pain and joy. The book is so evocative and pulls you in I listen to the book in the 8+ hour, looking forward to the next book. Good on you Katie
    Inspiring
Would you listen to Beautiful again? Why?
I would listen to Beautiful again as it was an inspiring audiobook. It detailed the life of Katie before and after the attack. Listening to her struggles and strength in dealing with them was inspiring and humbling.
What other book might you compare Beautiful to, and why?
I'm not sure what I would compare beautiful to as I haven't listened to anything similar. It is very unique. Though it does illustrate the importance society places on external beauty.
What does Emilia Fox bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Emilia Fox as an actress was able to bring the characters in Katie's autobiography to life by changing accents.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It is a book I wanted to listen too all in one sitting. As a listener you want to know what happens next: how Katie dealt with one struggle after another with the attack and ultimately enduring multiple operations.
    Any additional comments?
Katie's autobiography should be listened to by everyone, particularly women. It detailed an abusive relationship - flagging warning signs of this.It is also the story of a survivor, she went through every woman's worst nightmare and overcame it.
    beautiful
So honestly writing, inspirational. emotional, wounderful. looking forward to listening to the next book and the next
    Harrowing but inspirational
This is hard to listen to not because of a bad reading or poor story telling but very challenging subject matter. Yet in the face of evil you find some truly inspirational messages coming through.

  • Dear Mr Bigelow Audiobook by Frances Woodsford

    Title: Dear Mr Bigelow
    Subtitle: A Transatlantic Friendship
    Author: Frances Woodsford
    Narrator: Patience Tomlinson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-20-11
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Dear Mr Bigelow is an enchanting selection of weekly 'pen-pal' letters written between 1949 and 1961 from an unmarried woman working at the Pier Approach Baths in Bournemouth, to a wealthy American widower, living on Long Island, New York. Frances Woodsford and Commodore Paul Bigelow never met, and there was no romance - she was in her forties when he died aged ninety-seven - yet their epistolary friendship was her lifeline. The 'Saturday Specials' as Frances dubbed them, are brilliantly-packed missives, sparked with comic genius, from post-war England. We follow her travails at the Baths (and her ghastly boss Mr Bond); the hilarious weekly Civil Defence classes as the Cold War advances; her attempts to shake off Dr Russell, an unwanted suitor; life at home with Mother, and Mac, her charming ne'er-do-well brother; and escapades in their jointly-owned car, a 1934 Ford 8 called Hesperus.
Most importantly, we get to know Frances - and her deep affection for Mr Bigelow. She started to write to him as a way of thanking his daughter for the clothes and food parcels she sent. But what had begun as a good turn offered Frances the chance to escape a trying job, and to expound with elegance, wit and verve on topical subjects from home and abroad, bringing us a beady commentary on her life and times that leaps vividly from the page. Her letters to Mr Bigelow during his final illness are a tender and moving farewell, a touching conclusion to a unique record.
    Members Reviews:
    a sleeper
This book deserves wide readership in the US. It offers a window into the time of the "greatest generation" as well as a peep into a quirky relationship. The author's sense of humor is frequently evident, but this series of letters offers a social history of the less than famous, three-quarters of a century ago. I hated to come to the end, knowing that there could be no more.
    Beside the Seaside
A provincial British seaside town in 1952. No, not the Brighton of Graham Greene, but Bournemouth. Doesn't sound promising, does it? Yet Frances Woodsford's Dear Mr Bigelow, a collection of her letters about her life reminds us how much the world has changed since then yet so much remains the same.
On a trip up to London, she describes the ten days of 'long drawn out agony' of public mourning for the death of King George. A family numb with grief on public display, where in this case the Queen Mother appearing lonely and lost, reminded me of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
This is but one sombre note amongst a set of mostly resolutely cheerful and delightful letters describing her life. Her purpose in writing to pen friend Paul Bigelow, (who she always addressed as 'Mr Bigelow' as they had never met) was to brighten up the lonely elderly man's life. His daughter Rosalind had been very kind to Frances after the Second World War, sending her food and clothes parcels from America as it was not until 1954, fourteen years after the end of the war that rationing finally ceased in Britain. Wine, chocolate and biscuits were treats, brought out on very special occasions, not everyday indulgences as they are now.
The author comes across as immensely likeable, who hardly ever moaned or thought of herself - so refreshing compared with modern life. And Frances had every reason to moan - but she never gives in to self-pity.

Only Book in the Wellesley Bookstore in the 1st week of August 2005!
Patricia Williams has a column in the Nation, Diary of a Mad Law Professor, which I found out about
through reading this great book. I was at a music conference at Wellesley last summer and happened
upon this in the bookstore. There were not many other books, but thank God they decided at least
to have something there by an alumna, because the three books I had brought were not wearing well:
    1) a cynical though I suppose funny report on Howard Dean's presidential campaign, 2) a book about how
to survive in a nasty office environment and 3) I forget the third. Not great energy! But Williams' book was
very warm and funny. I was particularly admiring of how much she knew of her own family background.
A lot of family background sections in the beginnings of autobiographies can be ho-hum. This one was
a wild ride! It reads as though she knew her ancestors personally. The book is a very important discussion
of race relations and you just want everything to go her way.

    Publisher's Summary:
Without a map, navigate by the stars. Susan Tweit began learning this lesson as a young woman diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that was predicted to take her life in two to five years. Offered no clear direction for getting well through conventional medicine, Tweit turned to the natural world that was both her solace and her field of study as a plant ecologist. Drawing intuitive connections between the natural processes and cycles she observed and the functions of her body, Tweit not only learned healthier ways of living but also discovered a great truth - love can heal. In this beautifully written, moving memoir, she describes how love of the natural world, of her husband and family, and of life itself literally transformed and saved her own life.In tracing the arc of her life from young womanhood to middle age, Tweit tells stories about what silence and sagebrush, bird bones and sheep dogs, comets, death, and one crazy Englishman have to teach us about living. She celebrates making healthy choices, the inner voices she learned to hear on days alone in the wilderness, the joys of growing and eating an organic kitchen garden, and the surprising redemption in restoring a once-blighted neighborhood creek. Linking her life lessons to the stories she learned in childhood about the constellations, Tweit shows how qualities such as courage, compassion, and inspiration draw us together and bind us into the community of the land and of all living things. The book is published by University of Texas Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"Walking Nature Home is the engrossing, lyrical story of one woman's spirited engagement with natural world and how it, quite literally, leads her home. But it's also a profound testament to the power of wild places to heal and make us whole. An inspired and inspiring work." (Mark Harris, author of Grave Matters)
    Members Reviews:
A Courageous, Unconventional Path to Healing
In her remarkable-crafted memoir, Susan Tweit recounts the courageous, unconventional path she took after being told in 1980, at the age of twenty-three, she has an autoimmune disease that will likely kill her in two to five years. Instead of succumbing to the medical establishments prognosis, as a plant eco-biologist, she used her knowledge and intuitive wisdom to allow the rhythms of the earth and the constellation of the stars teach her how to live with her disease. She left a marriage that was not healthy for her. She found the love of her life. She initiated their move to a small town in Colorado that would feed their spirit by giving space to express their artistic passions. Thirty-six years later, living in alignment with the healing powers of nature, love, and creativity, she thrives. This is a most unusual and inspiring read.
    A Courageous Journey
Susan Tweit is grounded to time and place on this earth by the heavens. Having always loved the stars, in this memoir of faith and courage in the face of a severe illness, an autoimmune disease that some twenty years ago was supposed to kill her in five, she heads each chapter with a short story about the constellations. She also finds courage and faith and grounding in the act of walking and once took a hike of one hundred miles through a Wyoming wilderness with only a dog for a companion.
