Funny Stuff. I WISH I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS SCHEME...

Clever story about a young guy looking to play some golf in the Home of Golf and determines that going to school at the University of St. Andrews is his ticket.

Nicely written. Very readable. I have become somewhat obsessed with reading about golf in Scotland and most of the non-fiction reads like a listing-guide to the courses in Scotland.

If you are interested in reading first hand accounts of people playing/living in Scotland, I'd also recommend "Two Years in St. Andrews" by George Peper and "Playing Through" (I forget the writers name) - but the book is about Gullane and the courses in and around East Lothian, Scotland....

Great coming of age golf book

Kilfara describes in charming detail the characters of St. Andrew's and his loony love of golf comes through in rich portraits of the golf courses of Scotland. A great read for anyone going to Scotland to seek out the home of golf.

Hey Mr. Author!

OK, parts of the this book were really enjoyable. The author's portrayal of the town of St. Andrews and the characters that roam its ancient streets and the oldtimers who haunt the Old Course are priceless. Also, several of the courses the author describes (Machrie and Dornoch come to mind) make me want to book a trip right away.

OK, now what's disturbing about the book. What's annoying? Well, the author gets rather full of himself (oh yeah, how many times do we have to hear that he's from Harvard???) as he plays the daring expatriate who is so much better than all of the other rude, loud American tourists roaming Scotland. News Flash! Author, you will always be an American!!

The way the author breaks clubs and treats his friends and girlfriend and any other golfer on the links who never played golf for Harvard is truly horrid. Attention readers and friends of the author: never book a trip with author. Red flag.

Essentially, I fell in love with St. Andrews because of this book. This book renewed my passion for the game. But basically, after reading the book I come away with the feeling that I don't really like the author...

(So much of this book was filled with boring, detailed hole by hole accounts of the various golf outings the author made. Shoot me! Oh, yea wait till you read how the author treats the blind guy! When you get down to it, the author acts very selfish and pompous throughout the book and treats people like garbage. But before that chapter ends he will have a moment of enlightenmnet where he puts things in perspective and he repents. Then next chapter he breaks more clubs and screams some more, followed by more enlightenment and soul searching. Repeat...)

Insightful, accurate, and quite readable

This is an approach to golf books that I would really like to see more of.

We see many of these players and, in my case, some of their fathers on TV but we are able to see behind the scenes of how or why they got their start in golf. A great book for families who love golf and want to pass the passion of the game to their children.

I was looking forward to this book as being a list of anecdotes and stories, but unfortunately I was left disappointed. It really didn't live up to the billing. The stories are ok, but there is nothing in there that really made me feel wow! Nathan is obviously really proud of his charity work - and rightly so. But there aren't enough cliff hanger stories in the book to get me really excited. True tales from war zones and other disasters they may be.. but not really enough to make want to recommend this as and action read.

How to amputate a leg?!?

Would you consider the audio edition of How to Amputate a Leg and Other Ways to Stay Out of Trouble to be better than the print version?

I don't know I have not read the print version. I have actually now bought the print version for my daughters boyfriend as I think he'll enjoy it .

Very funny book , dry humour brilliantly read by David Treddinick, brought all the intonations to life.

Lead character which I presume is the author.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several poignant sections especially when he was in the police, but the one I will mention is when he and his colleague returned with the grandfather ensuirng that the boys leg was not amputated.

Wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this book. I found it entertaining and very funny in some places. The book clicked with my sense of humour.

A great listen

I thought this book was great! I even bought it and sent it to my dad for his birthday after I loved it so much! It's not gruesome but if you like war stories it's awesome!

Heartwarming, Funny, Sad, Tragic, Uplifting and Wonderful!

Ellen's first book, Kasey to the Rescue: The Remarkable Story of a Monkey and a Miracle, is one of the most inspiring and wonderful family memoirs ever written...and then some. Ellen openly and candidly allows us to be immersed in her family's 5 year journey that is life after yet another tragedy rocks her amazing family. She grabs us on page 1 retelling of the moment she received a life-altering phone call from a hospital in Arizona informing her that her 22 year old son, Ned, has been badly injured in a car crash and is likely to not survive the next several hours. Your stomach drops, as do your tears, right from the get-go. She brings us with her through the heartache of helplessly watching a loved one fight for every breath, work through fevers, infections, surgeries, months of hospital and rehab stays and finally the frightening reality of having to take her broken boy home to start the rest of his life as he now knows it - as a brain damaged quadriplegic. Along the way, the family is uplifted not only by Ned's will to live, but his incredible and unpredictable recovery as he regains the ability to communicate, move his hands and feet, and shows us that his mind is completely up to the challenge of getting his body back in the game. Her tales of her large and complicated family, including a trio of "barkie" dogs only become funnier and more interesting as they add a service monkey to the mix. Spiritual and adorable!

What did you love best about Cats in the Parsonage?

That's difficult to say because there was so much to like. The author did a magnificent job of relating various adventures with felines to his walk with God.

Also, the narrator's voice was so perfect for this read. He had a kindness to his intonations that gave the book so much character.

I really enjoyed the part about the baptism.

Maurice England read from the author's perspective most of the time and did a wonderful job of it.

The way the cat's play time was described was so much fun.

This is a great collection of stories for people who love cats. God also makes many appearances throughout the book, but it's not at all "preachy." It's just a lot of fun.

There are some sad parts - not many - but some. I wouldn't let that discourage potential readers because those parts are dealt with in such a tender way as to make them not only bearable, but moving.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves cats, wants to hear about God's tender mercies through his creatures, or who just wants a good laugh.

So it was informative about old FBI stuff I guess. Not so much about Bishop stuff, nor how they meshed. I bought as a time waster during my commute and it did do that. Not for long though! Firesides dont last over a couple of hours, max.

Good story, poor reader.

This is an adequate rendering of the life and career of England's greatest Naval Commander. However, the reader spits the story out like an angry primary school teacher, eager to go home after a stressful day. Maybe she was short of money and wanted to get to the end of the book as soon as possible, get her pay, and start on her next one. Her speed-reading style also results in her missing the correct intonation in many places. However, despite these annoyances, I managed to reach the end of the 3 hours farily well. Had this been a longer book, I think I may well have got fed up of the reader's style.

Too short and too rushed

I came to this after listening to robert southeys' lengthy biography hoping for a more up to date and objective look at Nelson, but I am afraid this is not nearly as good. All the major episodes in nelsons voyages are quickly raced through, although there is some interesting historical information delivered. But the worst thing about it is the narration which is really rushed and off-putting, the audiobook is about 3 hours long but should have taken at least 4 hours to read at a normal pace.

Nelson "Bye Jove"

I enjoyed this audio programme, although it has a short running time I found it factual and interesting. Nelson was truely a great British hero and this book portrays that wonderfully. My only crititism is I wish it had a longer running time to concentrate Nelson's life in more depth.

This 60 page book with blank pages between chapters has virtually no stories or tales about patient interactions.The closest one gets is when a nurse trys unsuccessfully to awaken a patient;however,we are told nothing about what happened before or after this encounter.The book simply extols the virtues and rewards of being a nurse(no argument there),sometimes using poetry.

WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE

I was the `city boy' sent by my parents from NYC to `vacation' in the summer with my grandparents and my cousins (Rema, Phyllis, Delores, Gene and Rudy) that they were raising in Powhattan, VA. I called these days the best days of my life probably because I could ride the horses every now and then. I was definitely a `tenderfoot' and got teased a lot because I couldn't run around barefoot like them and was deathly afraid of snakes. When someone, usually from the North, came to visit they would have a car and we'd `go up to Ballsville' to visit' Aunt Arnetta', Uncle Willie and my cousins, Willie John, Hattie (she was memorable, strong and outspoken), Weldon (around my age), Clyde and Lillian (small, somewhat shy and you wondered how she survived in this family of super-strong people). They worked hard; the men in the fields (They had the best looking team of mules I have ever seen), the women providing support, cooking, washing, milking cows, feeding chickens, slopping hogs, sewing, etc. No electricity was even expected and all water had to be drawn from the well. Life there was austere, with nothing promised but one would never know that from the attitudes of the people in the house built by my grandfather. The family was content but even then the kids fantasized about being able to use toilets rather than outhouses and the advantages of electricity. The house was constructed so that in the summer what air there was could go straight through the front door and out the back door to keep it cool. The long road leading to the house was, simply put, bad.

There were no telephones so calling ahead to see if it had rained was not a consideration and I wouldn't know how they made it up that road when there was snow and ice on the ground. There is one thing I know for sure and that is that it was a very long road from there to Harvard Business School then and probably even now.

The Road to Someplace Better should be required reading for middle and high school students as well as adults with any inkling of indecisiveness about their future and needing a boost in their confidence.

Hellfire. An epic Journey

Cameron Forbes takes you on a journey way beyond where others fear to go. For any Australian not to know the history of Hellfire Pass is simply un-Australian. Forbes explains the campaign and it's subsequent repercussions for both sides fluently, intimately and passionately. We will be visiting this area next month to pay our respects. Having read Hellfire, it's as though we've already been there.
