On Toby's Terms is an endearing story of a beguiling creature who teaches his owners that despite their trying to teach him how to be the dog they want, he is the one to lay out the terms of being the dog he needs to be. This insight would change their lives forever.
An inspirational dog story with a happy ending.

A really heart warming read with a good feel factor
I never had the pleasure of meeting adorable Toby or infact Toby Junior, but I feel like I know them so well having previously posted about him and Charmaine, the author, some years back. It was great to get to read the new and updated version of this book. Anyone who owns a dog or has dealings with one will love this read and completely sympathise with Toby's owners. The outstanding fact of this true life story is the owners determination to not give up on Toby and find his true nature and calling.
Like our own two dogs, Toby was adopted from a dog rescue centre and again like our two he came with his own ways - some bad, some good!! Toby found a lovely home with author Charmaine and her husband but everytime they left him he left a trail of destruction and heartbreak. The stress that this causes brings the marriage to breaking point. After trying dog training and several dog experts they finally find their answer in getting Toby a purpose and a focus, this comes about when they take Toby to a hospital who look after people with mental illness. Toby's new purpose is becoming a Pet Assisted Therapy Dog and the effect it has on both Toby and the patients is amazing and it turns his life completely around.
It just goes to show that just like humans if you are prepared to invest in something you love and give the time needed the rewards are boundless. A really heart warming read with a good feel factor which will restore your faith in the ones you love. Toby's journey began the inspirational efforts of raising over $10,000 for charities and teachings of character development in children across North Amercia.
especially for those like myself who love animals
This is not a genre I usually read, and I wasn't sure at first if it would be 'my cup of tea'. But I am not one to turn down a book so I gave it a try! It turns out On Toby's Terms is very much a page turner, especially for those like myself who love animals. On Toby's terms has be laughing and crying at parts. I praise Charmaine and her husband for their patience with Toby!
If you love animals, this book is definitely for you!

    Title: Maternal Threads
    Author: Frances Susanne Brown
    Narrator: Jane Oppenheimer

Length: 6 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-17-15
    Publisher: Frances S Brown
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Maternal Threads is a compelling story that weaves one woman's search of her childhood with the secrets that have been kept from her since birth. While researching her family, Frances Brown finds herself unearthing stories of flappers, prohibition, and strangers that seem to never quite materialize. It isn't until the death of her mother that she's driven to explore the details of her maternal heritage.
    Members Reviews:
    A wonderful memoir, beautifully done!
Maternal Threads is a memoir, a personal reminiscence of the author's life from her childhood to the present day, and as such it could easily have become tedious and the opposite of a "page turner." But it's neither. Frances Susanne Brown is a gifted writer who vividly describes the key moments of her formative years so skillfully that I not only felt I was there on the scene witnessing it all firsthand, I was completely caught up in the story she is telling. The people in her life, especially her mother and her aunt, both so different in their own ways and in the impact they had on her, are fully realized and I felt if I knew them. The experiences, from such simple things as school attire, to a job at the mall, to a strange and bad date that could have ended horribly wrong, to her adventures as a fashion designer and the ongoing search to solve a family mystery, are totally engaging and delightfully told. There are moments that are touching, even heart-wrenching, as well as those that made me laugh.
The narrator, Jane Oppenheimer, is a perfect match for this writer and this book. Far from being just a flat reading of the material, Oppenheimer truly becomes the voice of the author, totally real and convincing, a wonderful "story teller" with just the right touch and the right balance of drama and humor, always compelling and never out of character or over the top. I doubt anyone else would be better suited to narrating this book or could even have done it as well. She is a pleasure to listen to.
This is an audio book that I will want to listen to again, and that I do not hesitate to recommend. I think it's excellent.

    Title: Growing Up at Grossinger's
    Author: Tania Grossinger
    Narrator: Laura Giannarelli
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-28-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From 1919 to 1986, Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel provided a summer retreat from the city heat for New York's Jews, and entertained the great, the near-great, and the not so great, Jews and Gentiles alike. A melting pot of the Borscht Belt, sports, and show-biz worlds, loyal visitors included Red Buttons, Rocky Marciano, Eddie Fisher, and Jackie Robinson. Tania Grossinger grew up there. In her fascinating insider's account of life in the hospitality industry, she sheds light on how hotel children keep up with the frenetic pace of life, and how they come to grips with the outside world (which intrudes now and again), sex (happening in every room), and, occasionally, their intellectual interests. Growing Up at Grossinger's is both a wonderful coming-of-age story and a sentimental reading of a chapter of the Jewish experience in America that has now closed.
    Editorial Reviews:
Press play on Tania Grossingers bright memoir Growing Up at Grossingers and prepare to be whisked back in time and space to Grossingers Catskill Resort Hotel, that infamous summer getaway for the hoi polloi of New York City, where, from 1919 to 1986, celebrities mingled with commoners during the muggiest months of the year, and mischief and matchmaking reigned supreme.
Laura Giannarellis voice has a compellingly brash quality, sarcastic and incredulous by turns, and she brings a wonderfully wry humor to this light, nostalgic trip down memory lane. Even for those who never experienced a charmed Catskills summer, theres much enjoyment to be had from this funky memoir.
    Members Reviews:
    A lovely memoir
What a great story! The good stuff and the bad of being one of the lesser Grossingers living and working at the famous resort in the Catskills. Funny, intelligently written, great name dropping, the inside scoop. What a blessing in many ways that the author had a chance to observe, meet and befriend quite a few of the late greats. And what a powerful network and support system to have as she made her way educationally and career wise. The letter from Jackie Robinson got me all choked up. A very mature and thoughtful accounting of an interesting life.
    Growing Up at Grossingerâs
I enjoyed reading this story. Although I never went to Grossingerâs, I did go to 2 of the others with our grade school age through high school children and my parents in the 80âs and 90âs. There were still many of the same activities offered. We all dressed for dinner in a âdressy casualâ way. The men wore still wore sport jackets. We all found activities that we could do together and felt bonded. I enjoyed getting a personal perspective of how it was growing up in this environment.
    Gotta Love The "G"
Loved this memoir - really a great insight of a bygone era from someone who had a birds-eye view and spent their formative years here.Wonderful retrospective. So vivid, you felt like you were on staff here as well. Fun and interesting gossipy tidbits on the stars and the staff at the "G". Interesting life - and it wasn't all chopped liver and Simon-sez.

    Title: Beyond Xs and Os
Subtitle: What I Learned about Friendship and Success from a College Football Legend
    Author: Hayden Fry, Tom Berthel
    Narrator: Maurice England
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-25-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
How the mentorship and leadership principles of a legendary college football coach can help make you a success.
Tom Berthel first met Hall of Fame football coach Hayden Fry when, in the mid-1980s, his investment firm, Berthel Fisher & Co., became a corporate sponsor of the University of Iowa Athletic Department. This business partnership not only helped Berthel Fisher establish a winning public image, but it also gave birth to one of the most important and enduring friendships of Tom Berthels life. Fry became a mentor and father figure to Berthel, and the wisdom Fry bestowed on him through their mutual friendship taught Berthel invaluable lessons in leadership, motivation, and what it takes to be a winner in business and in life.
These are the lessons that form the core of Beyond Xs and Os. In the book, Tom Berthel recounts the many lessons he learned from Coach Fry - some but not all related to football - and explains how they helped shape his life and business. In each chapter, Berthel outlines a specific lesson he learned from Coach Fry, explains how he integrated these philosophies into his business and personal life, and offers advice to help listeners apply them to their own lives and businesses.
Each chapter also features a special Postgame with Coach Fry sidebar written by the venerable Coach Fry himself, in which he reflects on the events and lessons depicted in the chapter and offers a deeper perspective on each, enriching the lesson.
    Editorial Reviews:
Although he never played for College Football Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry, Tom Berthel learned as much from him as anyone ever could. Their friendship, memorialized here with a plainspokenness that also serves as a hallmark of Iowa football under Coach Fry, features Berthel providing a guide to the wisdom of his mentor - from overcoming adversity to leading by example and hiring the right people to leaving a winning legacy - and also includes the Coachs commentary on the writing of a businessman he watched take a small regional financial office and build it into a $2-billion-plus company.
    Members Reviews:
    Awesome Coach, great book.
They nail it. Coach Fry was and is amazing an inspiration. Beyond the great read, I saw this inspiration beyond football into his core values. We started the color guard at Iowa for football after 20 years of no military honor guard for the games into 1982. As a young cadet going on the field we waited in the locker room. Coach Fry stopped his journalist questions and time with everyone to talk to the 4 of us on how important the color guard was just before going to the field. I never forgot that and my career of 25 years from part of that inspiration. His book is him. Real. Thanks for this book, memories and more fans will never forget!
    Pride in a legacy
Thank you for writing this down-to-earth book. The part about your mother was absolutely moving, I cannot say enough for the honor that you give to this woman, who did more than most women would have the strength to do! It showed a loving attitude towards your family that I found very pleasing.

    Publisher: Regnery Publishing
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
William E Simon - quintessential American figure of the American century: Wall Street wunderkind, Treasury Secretary under Presidents Nixon and Ford, successful entrepreneur, US Olympic Committee president, best-selling author, pioneering philanthropist, and devout Catholic.
Simon's insightful and often humorous autobiography, A Time for Reflection, includes a diverse cast of characters whose lives intersected with his own - from the President and his advisers at the White House to the highest realms of the Catholic Church (in particular, Cardinal Egan), to celebrities, like actress Meryl Streep and sports figures, like basketball coach Bobby Knight. In A Time for Reflection, Simon offers us some behind-the-scenes glimpses of history being made, including: President Nixon as Simon knew him, both in office and after; how Simon confronted Ronald Reagan during the Republican convention in 1980 to help nix the idea of a co-presidency with Gerald Ford; the tumult of the 1980 Moscow Olympic games, boycotted by the United States, and the 1984 Los Angeles games, boycotted by the Soviet Union; how Simon battled the Arab 'oil crisis' as 'energy czar' for President Nixon; Simon's fight in the Ford administration against Vice President Nelson Rockefeller on how to help a bankrupt New York City; making the case for freedom with his best-selling books A Time for Truth and A Time for Action.
Simon's fascinating life also encompassed sailing adventures - including conquering the Northwest Passage from Alaska to Greenland and being named king by a group of Fiji islanders - as well as adventures of the soul: giving away millions to charity; becoming a Eucharistic minister; and helping to care for the sick, the poor, and the dying. William E. Simon passed away on June 2000, but his autobiography, written in conjunction with and completed by John M Caher, is now published for the first time. It is a testimony to one of the truly impressive Americans of the twentieth century.
    Members Reviews:
    Bill Simon's autobiography
A Time for Reflection is most interesting if ou have read "A Time For Truth".
A picture of the author obtained in Reflection in this case reinforced the
importance of the prior book, Time for Truth. i.e. The value of Constitutional Freedoms are illustrated in economic as well as moral values.
For me "Time For Truth" made clear the lack of understanding most government employees have of the impact of their decisions.
    For me three Stars
    A Noble, Extraordinary Life
William Simon's is an extraordinary lifestory, and reading his memoir, published posthumously this year following his death in 2000, was thoroughly enjoyable. Simon's life had so many incarnations -- prescient Wall Street trader, principled public servant (energy czar and treasury secretary), conservative intellectual, pathbreaking merchant banker, champion of the U.S. Olympic movement, philanthropist, intrepid adventurer, Eucharistic Minister -- that it's hard to fathom one person leading such an eclectic, richly diverse life.
Known for his sharp opinions while in public office, Simon is largely magnanimous in recounting his life experiences.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
True Faith and Allegiance: An American Paratrooper and the 1972 Battle for An Loc is an intimate and compelling account of the most brutal infantry warfare. It is also a critique of the mishandling of America's departure from Indochina. An unintended consequence of Washington's stampede to get out of Indochina was an upsurge in combat on a scale not seen before in Vietnam, peaking with the Easter Offensive of 1972.
The battle for An Loc, a key component in the North Vietnamese attempt to overwhelm the South, swept Mike McDermott, then the senior advisor to an elite South Vietnamese paratrooper battalion, into some of the most horrific close-quarters fighting of the war. His in-the-trenches account is augmented by detailed descriptions of a user's perspective on the parachute resupply, tactical airpower, and B-52 strikes that allowed the An Loc garrison to survive.
True Faith and Allegiance is a riveting recounting of the prism through which a Vietnam veteran views the war as he continues to live with the aftereffects of life-altering experiences in the service of his country.
The book is published by The University of Alabama Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"I cannot recommend this book strongly enough." (James H. Willbanks, author of The Battle of An Loc, Abandoning Vietnam)
"McDermott thinks and writes clearly, and deals with significant issues. He describes the nature of the fighting at An Loc with great clarity." (Edwin E. Moïse, author of The A to Z of the Vietnam War and Modern China: A History)

In October 2011, Jeff Ragsdale, a down-and-out actor and stand-up comedian, posted a flyer around Lower Manhattan asking people to call him if they wanted to talk. He thought hed get a dozen calls; instead he got hundreds, and then thousands, once pictures of the flyer went viral on the net. The calls came from all over the country and from as far away as Spain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Taiwan, and Australia. Jeff spoke to as many people as he could, answering his phone all day long. Here are the conversations, texts, and voicemails of a particular moment in time - a hilarious, dark, intimate portrait of the way we live now.

    Release date: 05-01-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Topgun on Wall Street chronicles one mans extraordinary journey from the cornfields of Ohio, to the cockpit of an F-14, to the boardrooms on Wall Street. Lieutenant Commander Jeffery Lay and number-one New York Times best-selling author Patrick Robinson bring a provocative, ground-breaking voice to the business landscape with a revolutionary answer for stabilizing corporate America: business - the military way.
As a Topgun fighter pilot, Lieutenant Commander Lay perfected a tried-and-true military technique: PLAN - BRIEF - EXECUTE - DEBRIEF. However, when he retired from active duty in 2006 and went to work for a subsidiary of the ill-fated Lehman Brothers, he noticed that everything about the business world was different: less efficient, awash with excuses for failure, allowance of men with tricky morals to rise to the top, self-gain overshadowing teamwork, and a devastating lack of accountability.
With such deeply rooted flaws, is corporate America doomed for perpetual failure? Answer: Not if we put admirals in charge and adopt the militarys tight chain of command. This game-changing thesis is interwoven with Lieutenant Commander Lays dramatic story, including his high-intensity strike fighter aircraft landings, never-before-heard details of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), and his heart-breaking, humbling, and inspirational battle with cancer at the peak of his military career. Topgun on Wall Street is written by a leader determined to show the business world that excellence is a choice and perfection is attainable.

    Great aviation elements
I was not at all sure what to expect from this book, but some of the reviews made me curious enough to buy. Good decision. It was very thought provoking and gave fascinating insights into flying strike fighters off a carrier. I can't say I disagree with Mr. Lay's views on the financial crisis but that's not my reason for writing these comments; I have about as much chance of investing as I do in piloting a space ship to Jupiter. However, I love flying and - to my delight - the aviation elements were considerable. There was much more about the author's experiences throughout his flying career than I'd anticipated from the title alone and it totally made the book for me. Don't let the cover blurb mislead you because this is most definitely not a dry tome on financial wheeler-dealing. If you're interested in the story of a man's rise from country kid in Ohio to Annapolis plebe to F-14 Top Gun graduate, I definitely recommend this book.
One of the greatest books I have ever read
One of the greatest books I have ever read. The sacrifices and self discipline these men endure to fly the F14 Tomcat strike fighters, and to go on and become Top Gun pilots, takes a bit of getting one's head around. This is a book written as only Patrick Robinson could write it. A book you just can't put down once you start it. Why doesn't the education department teach our young people in high school, there is more to life than bullying, drugs and making an arse of ones self on the streets at night. Thank God there are people like Commander Lay still in the world, to keep us safe and secure. Thank God there are people like Patrick Robinson still in the world, who can write with such brilliance that you never want to reach the last page of one of his books.
