What's the greatest lesson your mother ever taught you? In this true story of love, loss, and learning, Dave Tank reflects on the stretch of turbulent years that carried him around the world many times over, only to return home in the most tragic of circumstances when his mother dies suddenly from an undetected cancer.
Without his closest ally, Dave struggles to find happiness in an existence now void of purpose. Pushed to his limit, he walks away from a promising career to search for the joy and meaning his life is now without. In the streets of Paris and Rome, he finds joy - but still seeks meaning. At a loss for where to find his life's direction, Dave is guided to the answers by the most unlikely of teachers - his late mother.
Through the journals she kept for the benefit of her children, she posthumously shares her experiences, her struggles, and her wisdom. This is the story of two lives and the year they became one.
Members Reviews:
Fantastic
Heartwarming, heartbreaking, breathtaking, wonderfully written tribute. I read the entire book today because I couldn't put it down. Extremely well done.
Read it for your mom...read it for yourself
Let me preface this review by stating this is not typically the type of book I would read; I tend to go back and forth between rock n roll autobiographies (Motley Crue's The Dirt may be the best book ever written) and Business Strategy books (yes, 2 different ends of the literary spectrum). However, Dave has written a book to which anyone who cares about their family can relate. His writing style is easy to read and the book is a page turner; as a result, I read the book on flights to and from Detroit/Austin, TX one weekend.
The book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions in its journey: laughter, sadness, reflection and wondering if you really are valuing the meaningful aspects of life and dedicating your time and efforts appropriately.
Perhaps the most telling review I can give the book is after I had finished the book and my plane landed in Detroit....as I was driving home, I called my mom.
A beautiful tribute, Dave shares life lessons from his Mother
A beautiful tribute, Dave shares life lessons from his Mother, and his own journey around the world and towards happiness. An honest, raw, and emotional memoir that will touch your heart.
"We give our love, sometimes completely and sometimes tentatively, to so many things, people, and animals. Loss of that love does make it sad sometimes, but the greatest good is that we are capable of that love at all."
Dave Tank's turn of phrase is only outdone by his love for his mother
I stayed up until 3 am reading this book. Dave Tank's turn of phrase is only outdone by his love for his mother. Well written, sweet story. If we're lucky, we live to see our parents move on to whatever is next. It's hard to feel that way, but it is heart-achingly true. I lost my father not too long ago, right after Dave lost his mother, and this book was cathartic. It's okay to see the wonderment in every day and continue to share it with loved ones who are no longer here.
Also, take a look around the world! The story is about more than loss, it's a fun jab and giving the finger to corporate work and a fun jaunt to Paris.
Dave - thanks for sharing your story. And your mother's story.
Raw, honest, funny, heartbreaking.
Impressive debut memoir.
