NOT a children's book

Although the story was accurate information about the battle... the story was far too graphic for children. The narrator's performance was distracting because he whistled while he spoke. Every S sound was a whistle. For a book about Saxons and soldiers one can imagine how annoying it was to listen to him read it.

Whilst well aware that bad language is normal in some communities. This was more than "Reflecting real life".

Possibly a better read than listen

It became hard to listen to with a couple of character voices as they were so screechy and certain phrases and words were repeated so much it became a bit annoying. I think it would probably be better read as a book than listened to as the story was quite interesting and easy to follow, I just couldn't connect with it enough even during the darker, grittier parts.

Easy read.

Kept me interested and I learned a few things too like the ordeal of the slaves in England in the earlier days

The characters are very interesting and I loved that the story is told completely in verse

I found this historical fiction to be intriguing and I wanted to plunge into the next chapter immediately after I finished the previous one. The characters are very interesting and I loved that the story is told completely in verse!

Enjoyable book, technical issues with audio

This story follows a family from Germany to South Africa and highlights the various trials they encounter. Audible's summary explains the storyline nicely. This book is not long, therefore, there is not too much detail covering the backstory or setting but there is the right amount to make this story go smoothly. There is not any explicit sex or violence described.

This could be the story about a real family who lived during the Nazi and Apartheid era. Despite their hardships, they are some of the lucky ones.

The narrator has a pleasant voice and did a lovely job narrating this book. I would listen to another book by this narrator.

I would read/ listen to another book by this author.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

The audiobook does however have many technical issues that I hope will be remedied.

Good story potential; technical issues with it

The story is that of a well written about part of history, but from a somewhat unique perspective; that of a families struggle with leaving one horror (Nazism) only to be dropped into another (Apartheid0 as seen through the eyes of a twin daughter. This story has ton of potential to be a moving and perplexing listen. The work is well written in that the characters and plot are well developed and the narration of Angela Ness fits the people and locales very nicely.

However, the technical issues with this listen were just too much to overcome. Sentences often repeated (not the fault of the narrator from the sound of it) and at a couple of points it reverted back to the previous chapter. I tried downloading the book again, but had the same issue.

In 1938, a woman is hit by a car on Oxford Street in Sydney. Sheâs taken to Sydney Hospital where, comatose but aware, injected with morphine, memories come flooding back to her. These memories are disjointed, and it is difficult to know what might be real. The woman, eventually identified as Jean Ford, has Â100 in her pocket. She also has memories of being found guilty of murder and sent to Long Bay:

âWhat was it â almost twenty years ago now? â I was sent to die under a different name. I travelled to Long Bay Penitentiary like a celebrity, on a tram with tinted windows, ...â

From this beginning, Pip Smith writes a novel about the different and varied lives of Eugenia Falleni. Part of the story is told by Jean Ford in the first person, other parts are presented chronologically, interspersed with what may (or may not) be accurate reportage from the time. The first part of the novel presents a life of the young Eugenia, a life which makes some of her later choices understandable. If a girl had little power in the late nineteenth century, then a man surely had more. Eugenia Falleni spent over twenty years living as a man named Harry Crawford. And as a man, Crawford married two women and (possibly) murdered one of them.

âShe was just a half-wild creature who felt herself apart and different, who had grown cunning and furtive, hiding her secret and satisfying her needs.â

So many questions. So few definitive answers. Much of Eugenia Falleni/Harry Crawford/Jean Fordâs life remains a mystery. Ms Smithâs novel provides possibilities to consider: just how fixed is identity, how mutable might it be? And how very difficult it was (and still is for many) to live outside accepted, defined and prescribed gender roles. The many different characters who appear in the novel each provide a different perspective, another aspect of Eugenia Falleni/ Harry Crawfordâs life to consider.

I found this novel unsettling. Iâve previously read Mark Tedeschiâs true crime account âEugenia: A True Story of Adversity, Tragedy, Crime and Courageâ, but this is the first novel Iâve read based on Eugenia Falleniâs life. I was intrigued to read that it was seeing a police mugshot of âHarry Leon Crawfordâ who, after being arrested for the murder of his wife, was discovered to be Eugenia Falleni, a woman who had been passing as a man since 1899 which provided Ms Smith with the starting point for her novel. Iâve seen the same mugshot, and wondered about the lives, about the experiences, behind the eyes. In this accomplished debut novel, Ms Smith provides some possibilities to consider.

Just missed the mark

Plenty of content but story just didn't hold together for me, couldn't get to know the characters quick enough so kept losing interest, sorry but not personal or gripping in either character formation or storyline.

Passed a few afternoons while it rained but easily put down.

A Twisted Root of Arthurian Legend

Whatever you do don't shake your head and mutter "Oh no not King Arthur AGAIN!". Historical-based fantasy is very much in vogue within the genre and where better to start than a hundred years before the Arthurian legends? James Wilde has done just that and presented us with a Dark World lit only by the dying embers of the Roman Empire. Something dark and troubling is brewing just North of Hadrian's Wall, war is afoot, ancient magics and Gods are infiltrating the world once more and of course there is a prophecy of epic proportions about to reveal itself.

The Dark Ages are of course ripe for such novels and James Wilde is the latest author to populate a largely unknown part of our history with a quality bit of fantasy. He gives us a decent set of characters to follow and in conjunction with David Shaw-Parker treats us to a fast-moving plot of no little interest. I really enjoyed it and think it ends well suggesting this will grow into an enjoyable series as he gives us a genuinely new twist on the roots of Arthurian legend.

For me personally it didn't quite hit the heights of the very best in the genre with some of the characters feeling all too familiar and occasionally the combination of author and narrator generating the melodramatic rather than genuine excitement. It would be harsh to damn the whole thing because of that though. I got a lot out of it and I think it has real potential to develop into a very entertaining series.

the narator has the ability to bring to life the characters but also invoke the scenes set by the author, sinister forests, beautiful countryside vistas, lively towns, barracks life. Great story very well told
