    Language: English
    Release date: 07-05-17

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The Odd Angry Shot is the seminal account of Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War.
Brief and bracing, tragic yet darkly funny, the novel is an award-winning commentary on Vietnam, following a close-knit group of knockabout SAS fighters: their friendships, homesickness and fears; and their practical jokes, drinking and fighting.
Chronicling their experiences over one year, we learn that their enemy is not just the Vietcong, but their superiors, the mud and torrential rain, and boredom. It is a reflective and brutal account of how war damages not only physically but psychologically, as soldiers readjust to home life.
    Critic Reviews:
"This autobiographical novel stands the test of time, revealing human faces caught in a tragic chapter of Australian history." (The Age)

    Very insightful!
I decided to read this book on my Kindle after reading a review of it in the weekend paper. I have not read any books about the Vietnam war before. This was quite an uncomfortable subject area to read about, and this book is very raw and honest (through the unpretty eyes of a 19 year old), but such an insightful book. It is very short, but leaves a strong impression of what it was like for these young Australians in Vietnam, and how this experience has affected their lives. The word 'remember' is used powerfully throughout the book, and sends a strong message about remembering the terrors of all wars.

    Author: Robert Louis Stevenson
    Narrator: Mark F. Smith
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-22-17
    Publisher: SAGA Egmont
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
"Kidnapped" is a historical fiction adventure novel by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. Written as a "boys' novel" and first published in the magazine Young Folks from May to July 1886, the novel has attracted the praise and admiration of writers as diverse as Henry James, Jorge Luis Borges, and Seamus Heaney. A sequel, "Catriona", was published in 1893.
As historical fiction, it is set around 18th century Scottish events, notably the "Appin Murder", which occurred near Ballachulish in 1752 in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising. Many of the characters, and one of the principals, Alan Breck Stewart, were real people. The political situation of the time is portrayed from different viewpoints, and the Scottish Highlanders are treated sympathetically.

    Title: Crime Scene
    Author: Ed Ireland
    Narrator: Alex Robertson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-20-17
    Publisher: Edward Ireland
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In Philadelphia during 1962, the crime family was at its peak. They had their own premiere hitman, Salvatore DeSantos, and it seemed as if the world was their oyster.
Behind the scenes there were power struggles beginning to take effect and pressure from the New York and Florida families. Don Angelo Bruno worked to control everything as best he could. Then came the call from New York...they were sending a younger member in to be trained by Sal. There was also a massive plan being implemented that called for Sal's unique talents.
With young Vinnie Collasimo in tow, Sal lands in Los Angeles and a meeting with the three most powerful Dons in America. Also at the meeting are members of the CIA and FBI. Something is in the wind, and when his next target is placed in his lap, Sal knows his world will never be the same. Not just his world, but the entire world!
This stylized fictional account of one man's part in that dark day in November in 1963 will have you wondering just how much of an involvement there was on the part of the American Mafia, the CIA, and other groups. Was Sal the triggerman that day? Would he follow orders even if he didn't agree with them? Would the Dons be willing to put up with the well-practiced deceit of the government?
Follow Sal as his story unfolds in this tale of double-crosses and lies. Told in the authentic vernacular of the streets of Philadelphia as well as being peppered with euphemisms from the Italian background they came from. Crime Scene is as authentic as a warm soft pretzel or a hot cheesesteak. It will bring a taste of South Philly into your world and an insight into life in the city, the mob, and the early sixties.

    A Great Read!
Iâve been reading Ed Irelandâs books for a while, and this is the first one that isnât in the Epic Fantasy genre.
Whatâs really cool, is he slipped into this genre without any difficulty, and I have to admit, this may be his best work yet. I know, for me, it was among the most entertaining. I loved Sal, and every time he was in a scene, I pictured and heard Joe Pesciâs character from Goodfellas. The author did a phenomenal job at carrying over Salâs charismatic qualities other characters commented on throughout, as well as giving each character their own soul, so to speak.
The store itself was fast paced and it was hard for me to put the book down. I wanted to see what was going to happen next. The multiple conspiracy theories were woven so tightly together with factual history, itâs difficult to separate the two. The story does an awesome job at scratching both my historian and entertainment itches that I wanted more by the end. Personally, I thought it ended perfectly with lovable mention of a goat. I wonât say any more than that, but itâs definitely a great way to close the tale.

I think you will enjoy it.
Book Review for Harlan Hagueâs âA Place For Mei Lin.â
This book is a surprise: it doesnât fit your expectations of a typical western. Usually there are gun-toting lawmen, ruthless rustlers, gamblers, and shady ladies at the local saloon. Right away, however, the Chinese name in the title offers a clue that something different is here. Instead, this is the story of a man with a ruined past and no future. His life takes a new turn in an accidental meeting with a Chinese girl sold into servitude in an Idaho saloon. Then action begins and picks up intensity through to the conclusion.
In many ways the author develops the theme of the old West as a place of hope and new beginnings. He puts that concept to the test as the story unfolds. There is a radical re-shaping of the heroâs vision and his place in the West. Only then does the author include the Chinese girl into a fanciful blending of East and West.
Get this book and read it. I think you will enjoy it.
For the men, (and women) that don't fit in...
Harlan Hague's latest story offers a fresh location and time in history for the Historical Fiction / Western enthusiast. Part drama, romance, action / adventure story, the protagonist Caleb came to mind when I started enjoying the new BBC series Poldark. The independent outsider maintains his vision and sense of morality despite adversity. Mei Lin is endearing, the setting interesting and not overly represented in fiction.
    An Intriguing Historical Fiction
Harlan Hague has written an intriguing historical fiction, A Place for Mei Lin, set in Americaâs Northwest in the early 20th century.
At one time Caleb Willis was blissfully happy with his wife and two children, but when his family all tragically died, he was without purpose, not caring what happened to him. He drifts from Virginia and settles in Idahoâs Sawtooth Mountains area and sets up a gold dredging operation near Stanley. On a trip to town, he encounters a young Chinese woman, Mei Lin, who had been sold and pressed into service in a brothel.

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In the 17th century, a wall is built around the deer park of a great house. Wychwood is a world in itself, its ornamental lakes and majestic avenues planned by Mr Norris, a master of the new art of landscaping. A world where, after decades of civil war, everyone has something to hide or something to fear, where dissidents hide in the forest and Londoners fleeing the plague are at the gate.
Three centuries later, one hot weekend, there is a house party at Wychwood. Over the course of the weekend another wall goes up, dividing Berlin. Erotic entanglements blur, with distant rumours of historic changes, and a little girl, Nell, observes all.
As Nell grows up, and as the Berlin Wall falls, the world splits again. There are TV cameras in the dining room, golf buggies in the park and a Great Storm brewing. A fatwa alerts Westerners to a new ideological fault line. A refugee from the new conflict, the one which is still tearing us apart, seeks safety in Wychwood.
From the author of The Pike, winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Duff Cooper Prize and the Costa Biography Award, comes a feast of a book. Peculiar Ground is a breathtakingly ambitious, beautifully written novel about young love and the pathos of aging, about gamekeepers and aristos, agitators and witches, about fantasies of magic and the reality of the land, and about frontiers and fortresses and secret gardens.
Full list of narrators includes Lucy Hughes-Hallett, Anna Bentinck, and Maggie Ollerenshaw.

One for listeners who like a challenge
If you could sum up Peculiar Ground in three words, what would they be?
    challenging evocative overcomlex
What did you like best about this story?
The evocation of the early restoration peraiod from the perspectiveof a returning landowner, dispossessed under the previous commonweaklth regime and t5he sights, sounds and smells ofclothes, landscape, food, everything.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
The is distyinctyive character tiof the minor players in the narrative ,You get a better picture of the minor characters than yoou would by just reading it,, especially those of lower social status
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I nearly criedboth when LordWoldingham's son drowned and when Cecily revkeale dher plsguee symtoms to Norris through a window
    Any additional comments?
I had two problems: the first was t he multiplicity of the characters in the twentieth century sections: they ir individual characters emerged too slowly and I couldn't see the point of some of the female chasracters. There were too many themes: the borders theme came over clearly but thereee alkso seemed to be sdome significance in the action of water, which I didn't quite grasp.Overall I preferred the 1660s s sections and I was tempted to skip .

    Publisher's Summary:
The Middle Country, home of the Otori clan, is ruled by a benign but weak leader, while in the East the warrior-like Tohan are gathering power. On the plain of Yaegahara, the clans clash in a bloody battle that leaves Otori Shigeru desperate for vengeance. Meanwhile, in a remote mountain village, a boy is born gifted with the supernatural skills of his father, once the deadliest assassin of the Tribe.
Set in the years before the beginning of Across the Nightingale Floor, Heaven's Net Is Wide by Lian Hearn is the first and last tale, which both closes the circle and introduces new listeners to the fantastical, beautiful and thrilling world of the Otori. It is an epic story of betrayal, revenge, magic and love.

"It was pure pleasure." (Sunday Telegraph)
"Lian Hearn has written a saga that will continue to give pleasure to many." ( The Guardian)

I started reading this thinking it was the first in the series, not realizing it was a prequel. Its still good. Like a Japanese tale but its written by a Westerner. Its pretty accurate to true Japanese myth. Jizo really is the guardian god of miscarried and stillborn babies. One thing bugged me. It mentioned the "long nosed goblins that live in the mountains" that were swordmasters. These "goblins" are properly called tengu, not goblins.
    Very hard to put down.
In my opinion this book should have been first, but with this being said I believe that the author gave you characters whom you felt something for does what they call the "Origin Story" to find out why the father of the main character and his in all ways his wife too. Plus we now know why they turned him into a god after his death and why everyone else felt that it was their duty to place their loyalty to him and his wife. But with everything I could never understand why the main characters became so scared at the very end of the story. Yet I could not put it down, and reading the origin of the characters makes me want to reread the pryor books. Plus it is so well put together. It's very hard to put down. Especially if you enjoy Samurai stories. Yet the words Samurai, Ninjas, Dyamo or Katanas are mentioned in these stories. But you can pretty much determine whose who.
Beautifully brings the series full circle
The Tales of the Otori were recommended to me by a friend, but I'm wary of enthusiastic recommendations and at first only bought the first two books, Across the Nightingale Floor and Grass for his Pillow. Half-way into the first book, I was totally hooked and immediately ordered the last three of the series so as not to have to wait once I was done with the second.
This work was supposed to be a trilogy, became a tetralogy, then a pentalogy. I loved the first three books, and when I read the fourth, Harsh Cry of the Heron, I thought to myself, Lian Hearn should have stopped at three and left the fulfillment of the prophecy to our imagination. The fourth book is really the weakest of the series and undid whatever good feelings one had for the main characters (Takeo becomes a wimp, and Kaede a total b*tch).
