    Publisher's Summary:
In 1981 the hostages in Iran had been released, the Russians were the bad guys, Reagan was the commander and chief, and the DM-to-dollar exchange rate was peaking at an all-time high since World War II.
The free world was in turmoil and needed someone to secure it. At least according to the lieutenant.
Spicher Air Force Base was located in a rural section of Central Germany known as the Eiffel Mountains. It was up to Sergeant Anthony Harris and the rest of the USAF Security Policemen assigned to the 44th Squadron, Delta Flight, to make sure that the world stayed free or that at least their small corner of it did.
"Gentlemen, war is hell, even in peacetime."
The lieutenant had actually once said that to the flight during guardmount, and he meant it.

Yeah, That's How It Was - A Tale Well Told
The original version was pretty darn good. The 2014 re-edited version is even better, and makes for a very satisfying read.
This is an interesting aspect of the American Military that gets very little coverage. Author has most definitely been there and done that - he gets the feel exactly right; just ask any 811X0.
Anyone who enjoys well-crafted military fiction, and any past or present USAF Security Specialist should thoroughly enjoy this book.
Now, would like to see something about the missile field side of the house.

Great read. Being an old air Force cop, I can relate to all of it.
    Great Book
I really enjoyed this book. Having been a security policemen during the same time I recognized most of the acronyms. The author tells a good story while giving a pretty accurate picture of the Air Force Security Police. I highly recommend this book.
    Enjoyable
It reads like a tv series. Lots of small incidences and climaxes instead of one big climbing story arc. The military jargon could have used some clarity in spots. The book reminded me of an Elmore Leonard.

Good read if youâve ever been sf and itâs cheap. Go out and give it a read and see for yourself

    Publisher's Summary:
Queen Elizabeth I is dying, and the king of Englands oldest and bitterest enemy, Scotland, is poised to take the throne. With all her old allies and advisors dead, she turns to the only man she can trust: Henry Gresham.
Gresham finds himself unwillingly dragged into the political manoeuvring that will decide Englands next ruler. Involved in the race to be the first to tell James VI of Scotland that Elizabeth has chosen him as her successor, Gresham faces savage attacks on his home and those he loves.
    Critic Reviews:
"Stephen has a good feel for the momentary decisions that can help to shape the course of history." (The Times)
"Henry Gresham is a hero for all seasons." (Val McDermid)
"Breathtaking plotting and delightful characterization in a Jacobean tale of murder and political intrigue - a pyrotechnic, explosive rocket of a book." (Jenni Murray)
"Martin Stephen takes a refreshingly different approach in his Jacobean thriller...dastardly political and religious manoeuvrings, footpads, trollops and demented Catholics, all add up to a terrific book, the first of a long series, we must hope." (Spectator)
"Here is a thriller that is just exploding with action and double-dealing and which paints Jacobean London in vivid and dramatic detail." (Northern Echo)

Desperately needed to be proof-read before being published
Another good yarn from Martin Stephen, but completely spoiled by the very many and varied errors. If you're new to this author read "A Desperate Remedy" instead: it's brilliant!; if you've read everything else he's read, preserve your memories of an excellent author, and wait until this is released again in a form worthy of this author.

    COMING OF THE KING,,,6
The last few chapters were not good, kind of confusing, and the final sentence left you hanging. At the time, it was unclear to me whether or not there was a sequel to this book. I have found out since that the Shakespeare novel would solve the dilemma about the cliff hanging last sentence. I Have purchased that book, I hope it will be better than this one. I like Henry Gresham.

First book by this author. A complex group of characters. At times, difficult to follow. Unfortunately I could determine first book in series. It would have helped to read in order.

Very interesting, the description of the landscape and the people.

    Publisher's Summary:
A novel adventuring between the pre-WWI Russian enclave in Brisbane and Tsarist Russia. From the author of Schindler's Ark, another tale of oppression and the triumph of determined peoples.Artem Samsurov, a charismatic protege of Lenin and an ardent socialist, reaches sanctuary in Australia after escaping his Siberian labour camp and making a long, perilous journey via Japan. But Brisbane in 1911 turns out not to be quite the workers' paradise he was expecting, or the bickering local Russian emigres a model of brotherhood. As Artem helps organise a strike and gets dangerously entangled in the death of another exile, he discovers that corruption, repression and injustice are almost as prevalent in Brisbane as at home. Yet he finds fellow spirits in a fiery old suffragette and a distractingly attractive married woman, who undermines his belief that a revolutionary cannot spare the time for relationships. When the revolution dawns and he returns to Russia, will his ideals hold true?

    Editorial Reviews:
From the Booker Prize-winning author of Schindler's Ark, the book adapted into the film Schindler's List, comes this World War I drama of a Russian revolutionary in exile in a Russian community in Brisbane, Australia. Thomas Keneally's The People's Train follows socialist Artem Samsurov in his new life in Brisbane, a community which he finds lacking in revolutionary zeal. As he forms relationships with other Russian émigrés, including a married woman, his beliefs are challenged. Actor David Tredinnick inhabits the Russian's soul, bringing this story to life for listeners for years to come.
    Members Reviews:
    A good but frustrating read
I enjoyed the first half of the book, set in Australia, but the wheels of the train began to fall off a bit in the second half. The story line was interesting enough but there was much too much unnecessary detail on the actual October revolution which often read like a tedious history account, without adding anything particularly new or interesting to the basic story line. I mostly skimmed this part. As a result the ending was a bit flat. Having said this, it is an ambitious book and covers new ground in telling about the experiences of early Bolsheviks in Australia, which I found intrinsically interesting.
Engaging story from fine historical novelist
Another engaging novel from a fine practitioner of historical novel writing. This one concerns a fictionalised version of a historical figure who spent some years in Australia before returning to play a major role in the Russian revolution. Once again, Keneally manages to find humanity in inhumane times.

As every game and skirmish bring them closer to a violent end, what began as a game turns into a business as serious as death and dishonor, and each soldier realizes the price and the prize that betrayal offers.
    Critic Reviews:
"The madness of war and the passion evoked by baseball complement each other beautifully in this extraordinary first novel.... A sensitive, forceful, even breathtaking commingling of play and war, daydream and nightmare, the humane and the bestial, in which the human dimensions of warfare are unforgettably evoked."(Kirkus Reviews)
"A sweeping novel of humanity on the battlefield, peopled with provocative characters. Play for a Kingdom is that rare treat: a novel that interweaves war and play, an ironic tale told with compassion. Watch Tom Dyja." (Santa Barbara News-Press)

One of the most original and surprising "baseball" novels I've read (and I read a lot of them.) I was recommended this book but when I got it I seriously doubted if the author could make the premise believable. (baseball games between union and confederate soldiers during the civil war? come on!) Not only does he - but he writes beautifully about the reality and horror of war with a truly remarkable side baseball story. Totally worth checking out.

    Outstanding Civil War fiction
An excellent debut novel. The battle scences were right on and the baseball subplot was woven in very well. A very plausible plot, with an outstanding, rewarding ending. Well done.
Imagine a war where none dies
I read this a while back, but if memory serves me right this is fictionall diary. I gathered emotions that ir was well done as though it did happen. It captured the brutality of war's futility and how a common compassion for the growth of America's game could have replaced killing your own brothers with passion for thiscompetitive game. Great read if you love sports.

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The Confessions of Edward Day follows a young man through the 1970s and early 80s as he strives for love and fulfillment. While attending a lush party on the Jersey shore, Edward encounters two fellow thespians who change the course of his life forever. The beautiful Madeleine Delavergne quickly becomes his heart's desire, while Guy Margate - after saving Edward from drowning - morphs from a savior into his chief rival on stage and for Madeleine's affections. And for a decade following that fateful meeting, their competition drives them toward a dramatic confrontation and inevitable tragedy.
    Critic Reviews:
"The tension and constantly shifting exchange of power between the two men as they battle for Madeleine's attentions and struggle with their careers propels the plot until the love triangle comes to a dramatic head. Guy is a slippery character, while Edward, in his search for truth in acting and in life, makes a compelling fictional memoirist. Another winner for Martin, who never disappoints." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Two thumbs up
I really enjoyed this book. It is an insightful portrait of actors (could be any other creative types) struggling to make it in an odds-against-them world and have a personal life at the same time. It's catnip for theater lovers.
    Great Character Study
When Ed Day is in a life threatening situation, a man he has never met saves him.
This complication brings about the many dealings of Ed and his rescuer. These dealings are complex and involve many years and aspects of Ed's life.
The writing is coherent and Valerie Martin really does an excellent job at defining all the players' character. The plot is subtle but intriguing. It asks the reader what you might owe someone who saves your life and sees that you have an obligation of some sort because of that?
The narration is really good, too.
Window into the world of acting.
I really enjoyed the story. Interesting view into actors' lives. Engaging story with twists and turns.
I didn't like the reader. He often lacked inflection and emotion. It seemed so out of place given the subject of the book that I kept wondering if the style was an intentional contrast to the idea of a good actor. Still well worth a listen.
    A winner!
This book is fabulous. A great great story with compelling characters. I finished it 3 days ago and I am still thinking about it. The reading could have been improved with a reader who was more of an "actor". It took me a while to stop being bothered that the narrator of the story is an actor, yet the reader couldn't "act".
