It's December 1900, and Berylda Jones is heading home to Bathurst for Christmas. Tragically, 'home' is where she and her beloved sister, Greta, live in terror, under the control of their sadistic Uncle Alec.
But Berylda has a plan, borne out of desperation, to free herself and Greta from Alec for good - if she can only find the courage to execute it.
Then, on New Year's Eve, just as Alec tightens his grip on the sisters, a stranger arrives at their gate - Ben Wilberry, a botanist in search of a particular native wildflower, with his friend, the artist Cosmo Thompson.
Ben is oblivious to what depravity lies beyond this threshold and what follows is a journey that will take him and Berylda, and Greta and Cosmo, out to the old gold rush town of Hill End in search of a means to cure evil and a solution to what seems an impossible situation.
Against the tumultuous backdrop of Australian Federation and the coming of the Women's Vote, Paper Daisies is a story of what it means to find moral courage, of a crime that must be committed to see justice done and a sweet love that flourishes against the odds.

    Rich and beautifully written
Dark story line, however, the descriptive style of it captured me throughly. The middle of the story drug a bit.
    Too much emotion played out
Paper daisies started well, however I thought the story stalled somewhat when the main character bounced her emotions backwards and forwards and often these were over played. I was going to give up when the story took up again and had more flow and excitement to the story. Overall it is not as good as Kim ' s other book The blue mile which I really enjoyed, but still worth a read.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-12-15
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
Locked in a deadly feud, cowboys Randy Locke and Frank Farmer have spent decades attempting to annihilate each other any time they are within shooting distance.
So far, the men are even. One of Frank's bullets has given Randy a permanent limp. Vain Frank wears a prosthetic ear, his own lost to Randy's assault. If either of them remembers the original reason for the feud, it seems moot now.
Their quest for revenge has led them on a merry chase through the Old West - through soon-to-be ghost towns and major cities; cattle ranches and mountain cabins; brothels and fishing boats; jailhouses and movie sets. Even their marriages have fallen victim to the feud.
The story of their long-term hatred well known throughout the country, Frank and Randy are approached (separately, of course) by Abraham Cripplehorn with a proposition. With the popular Buffalo Bill's Wild West show a raging success, why not publicize their next duel and sell tickets to the event? Winner take all, in more ways than one.
Frank and Randy make a date for death... but will they be able to wait for the show? And could it be that their decades-long thirst for revenge is the only thing they are living for?
Loren D. Estleman's The Long High Noon takes the listener on a thrilling adventure, touring the Old West from the days of the trains and cattle to roads and film sets.

    Great
I have read almost every book that Estleman has written, and that's a lot of books --he's written seventy. This book, one of his western historicals, as opposed to his crime fiction, is one of his best. Set in the west-- post civil war to the early 1900's-- it tells the story of two Cowboys gunning for each other throughout the western states. The book is to a certain extent tounge in cheek than but also tugs at the heart strings. As always, Estleman's writing is superb, and his knowledge of the west is encyclopedic. What I like best about his writing is that the research flows as part of the story and is not just clunky exposition. Just read the book. Guarantee you'll like it.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling..." Annie sang quietly, holding Derek's baby blue cardigan and trying to detect a familiar smell. The same cardigan he was supposed to wear at his christening. Annie and her friends leave Ireland in 1926 young and optimistic, hoping to find a better life in Liverpool. Only things do not turn out the way they had imagined. Annie falls in love, marries and starts a family of her own. But with the onset of World War Two comes tragedy and loss, testing Annie's strength to the limit. Little does she realize that the salvation of her loved ones lies partly with a German woman named Hilde, whose life and situation mirrors Annie's own. Liverpool Connection is the second book of a trilogy and is based on a true story. The first book, The Night I Danced with Rommel, tells Hilde's story. The books are historical novels based on facts and tell the writer's family history.

    Brilliant
Would you consider the audio edition of Liverpool Connection to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version but the narrator brought the characters to life in such a way that the audio would be just as good or better.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I found the part of the book when the bombs first hit London to be particularly moving.
    Any additional comments?
This is an honest and heart wrenching story of the trials and tribulations experienced by those during the war. The writing was detailed and the characters were real. I spent a good portion of this book on the verge of tears but it is not soppy.
I received the book in exchange for an honest review.
    Educational & Entertaining!
Note: This is Book 2 in a trilogy, The Night I Danced with Rommel being Book 1. This book can be read as a stand alone.
The story starts in 1926 in Ireland. Annie and her friends feel they need to emigrate to England to find work and a better life. At age 16, she arrives in Liverpool and starts off with relatives. Pretty soon she has found a sweet beau. Marriage and children follow. As WWII erupts through Europe, Annie and her family and friends are tested in ways none of them had anticipated. This story is based on the actual lives of the authors ancestors, which makes it that much more poignant.
I really enjoyed Book 1 in this series, but I think I enjoyed this one just a smidge more. Maybe that is because this book references Hildes life from Book 1 from time to time and I can clearly see the parallels between Annie and Hilde. For both of these books, I really appreciate how the author simply tells the tales of the ladies during WWII without relying on drama. Life was a handful to start with and it doesnt need extra drama to validate the characters.
One of the things I learned from this book was that the Irish did not have to participate in WWII. However, several of Annies family and friends (Irish) living in England decide to join up with the English forces. This caused a lot of grief for Annies family and some felt this was betraying their heritage. And those that joined the service werent limited to just the men. In England during WWII, women were also drafted into war service. The author does a great job of showing how suddenly ones life can change during this time period.

    Best Served Cold
Alice Catherine Carters "The Final Dawn" is a dark, straightforward story of revenge. Her tale of the quest for vengeance takes place over decades and the vast expanses of Russia. Carter does a god job of making you feel the cold of the steppes and the cold that can exist inside the human heart. If youre looking for a quick read with strong themes, this will do.
The narrator, Melanie Fraser, was wonderful. I received this as a free Audible download in return for an honest review.
    Thrilling tale.
This story grabbed me from the start. Set in Russia during World War II, this story is as cold as the landscape and just as harsh. Valeyria is shaped by events that happen in the opening scene and harbors a hatred that will never melt. No spoilers, but strap in for an afternoon and enjoy the ride.
As always, Melanie Fraser gives a stellar vocal performance that will have you drawn in from the start. I think this style of story is made for her voice.
    A new "voice"!
It is easy to write about books I love, because I can enthuse and blatantly gush. It is easy to write about books I really dislike, because I can get very specific concerning the things that bothered me. But what about a book that falls somewhere in between? This is such a story so, let me begin with the things I liked and even admired.
This is a debut novel, and, as a first effort, is extremely respectable! For one thing, the premise of the story is excellent, and founded strongly in events that did occur during the October Revolution. (coincidentally, I read this book shortly after finishing a nonfiction of that revolution and its effects on Russia.)
The writing is excellent, and, upon occasion, close to brilliant. The author is an accomplished wordsmith, and if she seemed to be trying a bit too hard on occasion, that will work itself out with practice ..and I hope we will see many more examples of that practice! Her presentations of settings and action scenes are particularly good.
Now, for the things that didnt please this reader quite as much. The first rule I learned when trying to write was : show, dont tell. The authors tells us too much, and shows us too little. I would have been happier if this book had been 5 times as long as it was (it came close to being a longish novella), and would have enjoyed watching he r construct her main characters bit by careful bit. I know she can, because on those occasions when she does *show* motivation through action, she does so spectacularly. I am thinking specifically of the scene in which Valeria (a driven character if there ever was one!) is introduced to the art of hunting.

    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury

    Publisher's Summary:
What if Virginia Woolf's sister had kept a diary? For fans of The Paris Wife and Loving Frank comes a spellbinding new story of the inseparable bond between Virginia and her sister, the gifted painter Vanessa Bell, and the real-life betrayal that threatened to destroy their family. Hailed by The New York Times Book Review as "an uncanny success" and based on meticulous research, this stunning novel illuminates a little-known episode in the celebrated sisters' glittering bohemian youth among the legendary Bloomsbury Group.
London, 1905: The city is alight with change, and the Stephen siblings are at the forefront. Vanessa, Virginia, Thoby, and Adrian are leaving behind their childhood home and taking a house in the leafy heart of avant-garde Bloomsbury. There they bring together a glittering circle of bright, outrageous artistic friends who will grow into legend and come to be known as the Bloomsbury Group. And at the center of this charmed circle are the devoted, gifted sisters: Vanessa, the painter, and Virginia, the writer. Each member of the group will go on to earn fame and success, but so far Vanessa Bell has never sold a painting. Virginia Woolf's book review has just been turned down by The Times.
Lytton Strachey has not published anything. E. M. Forster has finished his first novel but does not like the title. Leonard Woolf is still a civil servant in Ceylon, and John Maynard Keynes is looking for a job. Together, this sparkling coterie of artists and intellectuals throw away convention and embrace the wild freedom of being young, single bohemians in London.
But the landscape shifts when Vanessa unexpectedly falls in love and her sister feels dangerously abandoned. Eerily possessive, charismatic, manipulative, and brilliant, Virginia has always lived in the shelter of Vanessa's constant attention and encouragement. Without it, she careens toward self-destruction and madness.

    Amazing read
An amazing read read by brilliant narraters!!! really good book couldn't put down, top marks!!!
    Excellent
This is a fascinating insight into Vanessa and Virginia's relationship and their individual personalities and talents. Additionally the forming and growth of the Bloomsbury Group is highlighted so well, we really get to feel the human side of so many well known names.
Lastly it was enlightening for me to learn so much more about Vanessa who sadly historically has been overshadowed by Virginia's fame. I was riveted to the whole book and enjoyed it tremendously.
excellent narration which really captivated me!
This was a step into the unknown as I usually listen to thrillers, so a very different pace and gentle style. Beautifully narrated and a real pleasure to listen to :)
loved this book. want to read more of this author.
great narrator. easy to imagine the Bloomsbury world & know they were real people.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
For fans of C J Sansom and S J Parris, Holy Spy features the Queen's Intelligencer John Shakespeare in the latest of Rory Clements' acclaimed and best-selling series of Tudor spy thrillers.
Clements, winner of the Ellis Peters Historical Fiction Award, "does for Elizabeth's reign what C.J. Sansom does for Henry VIII's" (Sunday Times).
In London's smoky taverns, a conspiracy is brewing: a group of wealthy, young Catholic dissidents plot to assassinate Elizabeth, free Mary Queen of Scots - and open England to Spanish invasion. But the conspirators have been infiltrated by Sir Francis Walsingham's top intelligencer, John Shakespeare. Shakespeare, however, is torn: The woman he loves stands accused of murder.
In a desperate race against time, he must save her from the noose and the realm from treachery. And then it dawns that both investigations are inextricably linked - by corruption very close to the seat of power....
    Critic Reviews:
"Clements has the edge when it comes to creating a lively, fast-moving plot." (The Sunday Times)
    "Enjoyable, bloody and brutish." (Guardian)
"Real quality...faster moving than C. J. Sansom...very, very well done." (Front Row, BBC Radio 4)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent as always
    Any additional comments?
This is a prequel to the other John Shakespeare books but no less enjoyable for that. The story is satisfyingly complex, combining a murder mystery with affairs of state. The characterisation and evocation of the sense of Elizabethan England is superb. The narration is very good for almost all the characters, but unfortunately slightly colourless for Shakespeare himself. I highly recommend this book.
    Nearly but not quite.
It's not bad it's just that the character of Shakespeare never develops enough to actually care what happens to him. Somehow the plot and the other characters also don;t become three dimensional either. It feels like it should work and be an Elizabethan Brother Cadfael but it falls short.
    Latest Rory Clements Shakespeare series
I enjoyed this book. It as usual evoked the period well and mixed true events with the fictional to good effect.
However if I was recommending this series to others I would recommend that they read The Queens Man " first this second then the others in their published order so the story as a whole is chronological. At the start of this book I was confused as I had not realised that it was part of a prequel so it took me a while to get into it.
Once I had realised that however it was easier to immerse myself into this story of the Babington plot.
It is well worth a read.
    Holy Spy?
This is Book 7 of the series.
Holy Spy tells a story of the conspiracy to assassinate Queen Elizabeth & place Mary Queen of Scott's on the throne of England.
    John Shakespeare is the spy.
In the taverns of London & abroad, a conspiracy grows amongst a group of wealthy, young Catholic dissidents.
    Really enjoyed this one.
    Tedious, boring, neverending.
Probably the biggest dissappointment so far since I joined Audible. (100+books).
If it was half length it might be bearable but the author loves to repeat himself hence the the volume.
There is no wit in it, everyone is soo seeeerious and booooring....
