Marthellen & The Major

After reading this second book in the series, feel like the Judge & Judith and their family are part of my family. Winsome characters developing and a good feel for the times of 1880 in Carson City, Nevada. It's refreshing to read of an older married couple and their adventures. Hope there's lot more books in this series.

I love her writing!

Good read! A great page turner! I enjoyed the book in it's entirety! Worth reading and reading again and again!

Goodbye....

After reading Gage's novel 'Confession', I somehow wondered if I hallucinated or misremembered how trashy 'A Glimpse of Stocking' was. Could something as bland, boring and ponderous as 'Confession' originate from a person who also has a mind that concocts gloriously over-the-top melodrama? Apparently, yes. No matter what 'A Glimpse...' was or wasn't, 'Taboo' is fresh in my mind and even trashier than I remember 'A Glimpse...' being, so colour me lucid, and colour the impossible possible! Now that's what I'm talking about; so camp there's even a cabin.

The gist of the set-up is 1930-1940s era Hollywood, with brief excursions to other less-glamorous places. There's a girl, there's a guy, there's haters, there's tragedy, and of course, an operatic climax. It's perfectly plotted; not only that, it has observations about Hollywood that may not be anything new, but are well-phrased and, I don't know, I just really liked reading them.

I'm not usually one to be impressed by violence or business deals in my fiction (Harold Robbins, I'm looking at you--except not really), however the leading man, Joe Knight, when he makes things happen, oh boy, I wanted to applaud the guy. The bada$$ to end all bada$$es, is our Knight in shining armour. He kind of mellows some after he meets the female lead, but considering they don't meet till well on into the story it's no biggie. Also, there are other omg amazing things happening to make up for it. I won't go into those things, or any that came before it, 'cause believe me, you don't want the surprises spoiled. At least I wouldn't have.

If you are at all interested in trash, camp, melodrama, you've got to get your hands on this book. It's a classic in my mind.

My fav book ever!

Well, what can I say? If you like Jackie Collins.. read this! It's even better. It's got twists and turns and every time you think you know what's going to happen...BOOM! She shocks you w/another twist. This is my favorite book and I highly recommend it!

Taboo leaves a haunting thought on love..

Although the plot needs a few details to enhance its credibility, the entire story is beautifully presented to its finale - love that is so painfully beautiful that it is a sin to love as much. It leaves a slightly disturbing view of what is left of us when loves consumes so much of us that there is little left when it's gone. This is the kind of love many of love yearn for in love, willing to exchange to have it. Life may very well be the price to pay to have it. This is all states beautifully with the quote: "When love comes, you plunge without thinking. You see that your life was an empty shell before love came, so you turn your back on the past without a second thought. And then, when the world comes back to claim its own, there's no way to fight it, because you have no heart to endure loneliness anymore.

A disappointing book

I was very disappointed in this book. The story was very boring the narrator was very boring. Maybe he didn't have a chance with the writing to make it seem more exciting than it was. However it was a waste of time.

Save your credits! It's a Trainwreck

This was a twisted, unresolved, tedious, limp imitation of Jane Eyre. Calling it a 'novel of the Revolution' was both a stretch, and hugely disrespectful. The picture on the front cover is the best part of the story. I wish there had been a way to split the star or make it a 'minus star'.

Medieval history comes wonderfully alive

Medieval history comes wonderfully alive in this great family saga. I have read all of Rebecca Gable's historic epics about the Helmsbys and Warringtons which also are a narration of medieval England from the time of the conquest till the beginning of the English Renaissance with Henry VIII. All novels are interconnected yet independent reads. What used to be the dark époques for me has become colorful and comprehensive. Oh, how I wish she would fill in the blanks with novels about the reigns she left out: John Lackland and Edward I and II. I will not give up hope that one day after Ms. Gable's has explored enough of the German king Otto, she will return to her roots and field of study: "medieval English history" !

Toller Roman mit mittelalterlichem Geschichtshintergrund

Ein Roman, den man nicht mehr aus der Hand legen moechte, hat man mal angefangen...sehr spannend und auch einfuehlsam geschrieben. Man leidet foermlich mit der Hauptfigur Caedmon!

It's the best historical fiction I have ever read. And it is written in the German language. It is so great that Amazon has foreign language books.

I have a hard copy of this book and have read it countless times. One of those stories that's hard to put down. The author is very good about keeping it accurate, of course with a little bit of writers freedom!

A wonderful historical mystery in German

This is the first of this author's historical mysteries I have read but it will not be the last. It is set in the 14th century, and the heroine is a feisty woman (my favorite kind of heroine!) who has studied both Jewish and Muslim medical lore (much ahead of European medical thought at the time), and fights prejudices against non-Christian healing methods during one of the bubonic plague outbreaks.

I am something of an expert on the history of medicine, and I was very impressed with the accurate background of the story. But what really made me stay glued to the Kindle page is the rare combination of great story telling and awesome command of language the author offers. This is a book I wanted to read out loud because the language is so beautiful, and between the likeable characters and their difficult journey, I could barely stand to put down the book (ah -- Kindle).

For those who are not fairly fluent in German, the book may be difficult, because it uses quite a bit of medieval vocabulary that is not familiar to modern readers. But if, like me, you are trying to remain fluent in German while living an English-speaking life, this is a gem worth investing in.

Very exciting and easy to ready German book

I like historical novels and really liked the story of this book. Very exciting to read about pest as disease, the circumstances the people lived at that time and how they treaded pest. Completely new to me was the information about how Jews were treated at that time and what was their position. Highly interesting indeed! It is easy to read German language too- can recommend.

First part is interesting

Kind of lost interest in second half of story because some of the situations could not have possibly happened. Way to farfetched and ending dragged on and on.

A Good Tale

A great little novel, with a lovely plot on an historical fact of an idea. Very enjoyable listening and well read by Mr Keeble.

Utterly awful.

I downloaded this book following a good review in The Guardian. What a terrible mistake. The narrator makes the most of what he has to work with - although there is a sense that even he looses heart at about the half way mark given the appalling writing which repeats, and repeats and then repeats it's self. The main problem is that Malcolm Archibald is a very poor writer. The plot is laughable - the attention to period detail negligable. The dialogue between characters is just pathetic - failing to reach 'A' level standard. There are just so many better books to listen to than this - which is just 8 hours of wasted time. Rather than this, why not consider 'Stones Fall' - better in every way.

gripping story

Having read the book, I listened to the audio version while travelling at work. It was just as good: Archibald's text transfers very well to the spoken word: it was like listening to a play.

All credit to the reader, Jonathan Keeble, who kept the flow smooth, even with the Geordie and French accents.

Overall, this was a highly enjoyable listening experience.

Depressing

the most depressing story ever told, I kept waiting on her exciting life to unfold, it barely did and in the the last 20 minutes of a 14Hour story I cant believe I stayed with it that long.

Mind Capturing Book that Keeps you turning

Jory Sherman caprutes your imagination from the first page to the last. The story is absolutely great. I couldn't put the book down. It gives the reader a good look into how settlers and trappers had difficulties settling down and getting accustomed to the new surroundings and wildlife. We see how the lives of new settlers are affected by Indians. Jory Sherman presents his main characters as bold people, willing to explore what lays beyond their camps. He is an excellent author, causing a feeling of closeness to the characters in this book. We feel for Sheila and Davey as they attempt to overcome their problems. We can understand their pains and happiness. I would Suggest that anyone who likes old fashioned, historical settings to read this book. You will not be disappointed
