In the aftermath of the First World War, Hugh Thurne, a British diplomat involved in the peace negotiations, seeks solace in his rented palazzo in Venice rather than returning to his wife and the charade of his marriage in London. Although profoundly disturbed about the long-term prospects for peace, he has faith in the city's power to raise his spirits. Hugh eagerly looks forward to visits with his old friends Giocomo and Valentina Venier in their dilapidated palazzo by the Grand Canal, renewing his affair with a young opera singer, Emanuela, and to the arrival of Violet Mancroft, the widow of his best friend lost in the war. What he does not anticipate is the shadow lying over the Venier family's future. Nor has he reckoned with the vagaries of his own heart.

    Great audio
This was my idea of a perfect audio book.
The well-drawn characters each take turns to speak in the first person which keeps the gripping plot moving at a good pace. The historical period itself is exciting and I particularly like the way Chevalier portrays the immense sense of change in society at the beginning of the 20th century.
Falling Angels is my second Chevalier audio book, after Remarkable Creatures, and I am delighted to see several more also available on Audible.
    back on form.
    Any additional comments?
I didn't like the format in which this book is written. all the characters say their own piece in each chapter which makes it a bit disjointed but I stuck with it and it became really good when it got to the suffragette part of the story.
eve Matheson did a good job of performing the book bringing the characters to life.
    Falling Angels
This was a poignant story about childhood, motherhood, suffrage, and life at the start of the 20 th century. The narrator was fantastic, managing to create separate identities for each of the characters - important for a story where each chapter is a first person narrative by a different character. What let it down was the recording quality, echoey, tinny and badly spliced in places. A real shame really.
    Slow start, strong finish
It was a little difficult to get into this story to start with due to the multiple characters speaking in the first person. The narrator did a great job of differentiating them but it was a confusing beginning. As time passed and the characterisation was clearer the story became more involving as it moved from the death of Queen Victoria to the death of Edward VII with lives and characters changing in large ways and small. By the end I was sorry to leave the story and wanted to know what happened next to some of the people I'd spent time with.
    Brink of a new era
Although written in the voices of the cast of characters, Eve Matheson conveys in her reading the way I read the story when not also listening to the audible version. Sympathetically but not overly dramatic when dealing with death.
The story describes a brief historical period but a time when there was the beginning of change especially for women.

Even as she falls in love with the builder's son, Ham, and panic spreads in the gathered tribes, Re Jana questions all that she hears and believes her family will be saved, even as the deluge begins and the doors to the ark are sealed.

    beautiful work
This is one of the most wonderful books that I have ever listened to. Rebecca goes against what her family wants her to do and does what she knows God wants her to do and she is greatly blessed by it. This is her life story of her life in the Appalachian mountains. It tells of the hard times that she had with the "folk that live there." This is a story that I wish was longer. A great blessing.

    Mon Dieu no passion
Ok I admire the author for writing about her great grandmother. HOWEVER, how you can take a time like the turn of the century, in Indochina, and a love that rips a family apart and make it so undiscriptive, I will never know. This author , probably without meaning to , has painted her gg as a person who is never satisfied even with the man she loved. She must have driven him mad with her constant second guessing. We are only unhappy when we settle for less. I am sure her grandmother was a fine person, but she is painted as an unsettled whiner. May a film director can take this story and make it good by adding soul and color as they ;did for "The Lover", it is not here by this author , in this book.

Here is a captivating coming-of-age novel in the tradition of Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress.
Translated by Martin Merz and Jane Weizhen Pan.
    Critic Reviews:
"The novel's larger portrait of Love Liu and Second Prize Wang's friendship emerges with touching clarity and provides a perfect counterbalance to the corruption and confusion of the Cultural Revolution." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Unfortunate reading, annoying self-narration
Everything in the story line revolves around the viewpoint of Love Liu, a particularly self-obsessed teenage boy, perhaps an unnecessarily redundant description. Set against the background of the cultural revolution, this coming-of-age story keeps the cultural revolution way too far in the background to inform the listeners. The immensity of the cruel and erratic politics of the time are merely hinted at in the novel, but explicated in the afterword (should have been the "Forward."). Love Liu does not seem to register anyone else's reality as having any validity, and as a result creates catastrophic problems for his parents, best friends, teachers, and himself. Themes and events are introduced and then dropped, leaving enough loose ends to be frustrating and dissatisfying. The ending was limp and bathetic.
I love books by Chinese authors and nonfiction about China and was looking forward to this. Alas, thumbs down.

Newton Cutter was of strong German-Swiss stock, one of the successful gold miners that had left the hard digging behind to take up the trade he learned at his father's knee.
At 18, leaving his family almost 2000 miles away, Newton had dug for gold in the hills of Bear Valley, California, finding fortune through backbreaking work. The freezing winters drove him south to find a warmer climate and one day he rode into a quiet county town called Bradford. A handsome, single man used to physical labor, he renovated an old warehouse and opened up the only blacksmith shop within 60 miles. Within two years, it was a thriving business and Newton had once again found a satisfying level of success.
But something was missing. It was a true home and a family. Now he faced the greatest work of his life.

    Different Type of Western
I got this book via audiobook boom. Newton Cutter is a different type of hero. This is a long story and you have to be awake to listen to it. If not you will miss something and wonder how the story got to where it is. Newton is the main character but there are a lot of secondary characters that make the story complicated. If you listen closely you will not get lost. I liked some parts better than others. The narration helped move the story along.

Meanwhile in Scotland, John Grant, a young man with unusual abilities, is rescued from certain death by a formidable Moorish warrior whose own life was once saved by John's father.
Unbeknown to them, John Grant and Prince Constantine share a unique connection - a connection that lies at the very centre of their beings.

    Enthralling
I loved this novel which reminded me a little of Dorothy Dunnett's wonderful books. However I did struggle with it in audio form and feel, with its jumping in time, it would be easier to follow in book form. I enjoyed Neil Oliver's use of language and really liked his voice but there was no pause between chapters and slight pauses, especially when a new chapter takes you to a different time or place in the story, do help when listening rather than reading what is a fairly complex narrative. Personally I love the blend of history and the supernatural and the author's version of Jeanne d'Arc's life. His writing let me "see" all the action (though some of the bloodiest scenes made my stomach clench!) and I think this would make a great film. I would certainly be keen to listen to another book by Mr Oliver.
    A stunning, sweeping epic
I absolutely loved this book. It's a sweeping epic of a story spanning a continent and several lives. It is woven together by a beautifully crafted narrative and made all the more appealing by Neil Oliver's performance.
This is the best book I've listened to in a long time.
    A captivating story.
A well written story beautifully told, a fascinating glimpse of a moment in history. My only grumble is that the very end seemed a little rushed, it took me by surprise.
    Disjointed Warrior Tale
Set in the 15th century It starts with a prologue -a woman jumps from a tower. Then there's a young boy John (who lives with his mother), and a bear of a man -Badr who is a warrior. We discover Badr knew the boy's father, so the two eventually come together. Separately a new strand starts up with the story of John's mother. The writing is evocative and I can see how the author tries to weave the story together. At times it is emotional, but I found it really confusing to follow on audio and wasn't interested enough to finish it. Read by the author, he has a strong, clear voice but the production wasn't great as there was no pause between chapters. I often didn't realise a new chapter started and this added to my confusion. Overall disappointed with what could have been a heartfelt story of past times.
    What utter rubbish
I thought I was getting a historical fiction novel not superstitious/mythical rubbish. Gave up after2 hours.

Spannend, lehrreich, wichtig, sehr gute Literatur
Love, War, History in a Great Mix
This book earns 5 stars from me for several reasons. First it includes many historic facts dealing with the era of World War I in Europe, especially from the British, German, French, Russian and American perspectives. Interwoven into this history are people from those countries representing different social, educational and political perspectives. Ken Follett develops the story chronologically and keeps the reader guessing how his heroes will master their situation and how the mighty will fall. I'm looking forward to reading Mr. Follett's next book.
    Super gut geschrieben
