    Title: Stories of Other Worlds
    Subtitle: A Honeymoon in Space
    Author: George Griffith
    Narrator: Dudley Sutton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-11-15
Publisher: Spokenworld Audio & Ladbroke Audio Ltd
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
For the very first time in audio, Dudley Sutton reads the pioneering science-fiction serial Stories of Other Worlds: A Honeymoon in Space, written by George Griffith and originally published over six parts in Pearson Magazine at the end of the 19th century in the UK.
The adventures, here collected as one audio edition, see his newly married adventurers, exemplars of the 'Race That Rules', exploring planets in different stages of geological and Darwinian evolution on an educational odyssey, drawing heavily on earlier cosmic voyages.
Very much products of their time, the stories hold up well against greats such as HG Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle. A truly fantastic piece of Victorian science fiction. As an explorer of the real world, Griffith shattered the existing record for voyaging around the world at the behest of Sir Arthur Pearson, completing his journey in just 65 days. He also helped discover the source of the Amazon river. He died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 48 in 1906.
In this collection, all six original short stories are brought together and read by the legendary Dudley Sutton (known to so many as Tinker from the Lovejoy TV series):
Book 1: A Trip to the Moon
Book 2: The World of the War God
Book 3: A Glimpse of the Silent Star
Book 4: The World of the Crystal Cities
    Book 5: In Saturns Realm
    Book 6: Homeward Bound

A Turn of the Century Space Odyssey
I have given a general review of George Griffith's novel, _A Honeymoon in Space_ (1901) on another site. This is a review of a particular edition of the novel, the Forgotten Futures Library edition. First, a quick bit of background information. George Griffith (1857-1906) was one of the so-called "rivals of H.G. Wells" who wrote science fiction in Britain during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. He was a competent writer, but he was constantly overshadowed by Wells throughout his career and was never able to achieve the same degree of fame. He was extremely anti-American in his politics, and this prevented his books from being published in America for a great many years. Some of his science fiction novels include _The Angel of the Revolution_ (1893), its sequel, _Olga Romanoff_ (1893-4), and _The Romance of the Golden Star_ (1891).
In 1900, Griffith serialized a novel in _Pearson's_ under the title, _Stories of Other Worlds_. In 1901, a book version of the novel appeared under the title, _A Honeymoon in Space_. Under the editorship of Marcus L. Rowland, both the magazine and the book version have been reprinted, along with period illustrations. There are brief but well-written explanitory notes and a glossary by the editor. Usually, the book version of the novel is reprinted nowadays... but not always. Sometimes chapters from the magazine edition do crop up, and I find that it is handy to have both of them back to back. Rowland notes that while there are parts of _Honeymoon in Space_ that seem to be remarkably similar to Edisonades or E.E. Smith space operas of later years, the novel in fact had little direct influence on mainstream science fiction. Griffith anticipated more than he influenced the field.
As to the novel itself, it involves Lord Redgrave, who launches a whirlwind courtship of Miss Zaidie Rennick and marries her.

    Fell Short
It was well read but the storyline was predictable and the character development never really made up for it.
The story was told from the perspective of three characters but it was hard to see how some parts/perspectives added to the story. Many of the sub plots were underdeveloped, unrelated to what appeared to be the key theme, and/or lacked satisfying conclusions, though more time was often spent on these sub plots, than the titled plot.
The court aspects also annoyed me. Even back in the war years I don't believe the lawyer would have gotten away with the hearsay, speculation, and storytelling as described which made the whole thing seem like a farce.
Overall, It was fine for a long car journey but not a satisfying or gripping tale.

A blend of fact and fiction, the story describes the massacre at Fort Seybert, Mary's life in an Indian village, and her eventual escape and return home. Mary lived from 1749 to about 1804, married and left numerous descendants. Her mother and four siblings were also captured but only one returned home. The historical fiction novel The Dark Side of the Mountain describes the massacre and the journey of her captured mother Anna Margaretha Mallow, who lost three children during that time.

    Good read
This is a very good account of what happened to white hostages. We had also read Follow the River in book club about a hostage taken from the same area. A girl in our book club had a relative who was also captured and later ransomed years later.
    History was real
I don't think it is classic literature, but it is an important story that I am glad is being told on a wider scale. Some of MY relatives were taken at Fort Seybert, too. It makes the event a little more real and that is really important
    Very good story!
I REALLY enjoyed this book! It is based on a true story of a family taken captive by the Shawnee. It is not a romance, nor is there any sexual content. It is suitable for preteens and older. It is a quick read. I will put it in my "to read again" collection.
    Very Good Story
The book was good, and held my interest. My only complaint is that it's too short. I would love to read more about Mary's experiences with the Shawnee.
    Good Story
This was a good story, a little on the short side. I liked it.

A Lovely Story About Two Close Knit Sisters
"Word Blind" was a lovely short story about two sisters, Annie and May whom one could read very well and the other had trouble with words. Annie was frustrated that she had trouble with words and her father thought that perhaps she was slow or lacking something. In those days there wasn't a word for dyslexia.
This was a beautifully told double narrative from each sister's point of view. I love how this audiobook was presented and I felt that it was thought-provoking as well as a delightful listen. Definitely recommended.
Genevieve Sibayan did a fabulous job narrating this book. She has a soft voice which was perfect for the story. She differentiated the sisters, one having a slightly younger voice than the other and her voice inflections were terrific. A great match of author/reader.
"This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audiobook Blast."
    Dyslexia, Childhood, Sisters
If you could sum up Word Blind in three words, what would they be?
    Draws you in!
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It warmed my heart! Can't think of anything else to say that wouldn't spoil it.
What does Genevieve Sibayan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Oh, I absolutely LOVED the quality of her voice! It's a voice that you really want to keep listening to. I'd likely keep listening to a book I didn't like, just to listen to her. I love how she says the name Annie.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The part when Annie overhears her father telling someone how she was stupid made me think deeper about an issue that I do not have. It helped me understand better.
    Any additional comments?
Very enjoyable listen! Wonderful voice, and a nice and short story. This book is very instrumental in educating people on what dyslexia is and how it can affect
    a child and their family.
    Word Blind
This was a fascinating book.Annie and May are sisters,While one is a great reader and thinker, the other is a visual person and can not read.Feeling alone Annie come into contact with an uncle who is also 'word Blind'.Between the two girls ,they make their way into a brand new world. There is a sense of history to this book.I loved it!I was given this book free of charge for an honest review.
    Frustrating For This Listener/Reviewer
This book was not for me. *I was given a copy to listen to in exchange for my review. I really tried to give it a fair shot, but even with less than an hour to go, I still hadn't had anything or character grab my interests.
Perhaps it was the setting, perhaps it was the story but I just could not get into it, it didn't keep my interest and I'm sorry that it didn't grab me.

    Publisher's Summary:
Rush Oh! is a deeply moving and captivating novel that will capture listeners' imaginations and launch a brilliant new voice in fiction.
When the eldest daughter of a whaling family in Eden, New South Wales, sets out to chronicle the particularly difficult season of 1908, the story she tells is poignant and hilarious, filled with drama and misadventure. Swinging from her own hopes and disappointments, both domestic and romantic, to the challenges that beset their tiny whaling operation, Mary's tale is entirely relatable despite the 100-odd years that separate her world from ours.
Chronicling her family's struggle to survive the season and her own attempts to navigate an all-consuming crush on an itinerant whaleman with a murky past, Rush Oh! is also a celebration of an extraordinary episode in Australian history when a family of whalers formed a fond, unique allegiance with a pod of killer whales - and, in particular, a killer whale named Tom.

An interesting book about the convict community and corruption in Sydney during the 19th century. I didn't realise it was the second book in a trilogy which is a shame. I have purchased the third book which I'm looking forward to. I have read another trilogy of Deborah Challinor starting with "Tamar". It was a wonderful series.

    Present-day Endeavours Parallel Throughout History
Strange Objects takes you on a journey during the historical finding of shipwrecked items unseen for centuries, which unexpectedly begins a series of events that could change Australian history forever.
Gary Crew, author of Strange Objects, was born in 1947 and has become a highly respected writer for young adults in Australia. During his career he has earned the prestigious Children's Book of the Year Award a record four times which include the CBC Book of the Year: Older Readers for Angel's Gate and Strange Objects. Gary's talent does not only lie with novels but also with picture books and this has led to the CBC Picture Book of the Year award for First Light and The Watertower.
Strange Objects recounts the enigmatic events following Steven Messengers finding of the Iron pot, where the story takes place over two periods in time, the present and 1629. Steven is a young teenager finding it hard dealing with life's events such as being a teenager, his only friend Nigel Kratzman and living in rural Australia. On a biology field trip at the Murchison River Steven stumbles upon an iron pot containing a mummified hand with a gold ring attached, and a leather bound journal. Due to its significance various people investigate the findings and try to accurately inform the public. Everyone involved becomes captivated by the contest and the leather bound journal is seen to be the key in unlocking the mysteriousness of the items. However one of the problems is that the gold ring, previously attached to the finger, disappeared and ended up in the possession of Steven unbeknown to anyone.
The story then starts to take a turn into the mysterious and strange as the journal is translated to reveal the author as Wouter Loos, a criminal and survivor of The Batavia Shipwreck in 1629. Its publication in the newspaper share the experiences which he and his fellow cast-way Jan Pelgrom underwent during their time in the outback and their unanticipated discovery of the mysterious white girl Ela. However back in the present Steven begins to have visions while wearing the ring of events dating back to 1629 when Wouter Loos wrote the journal. Certain parallelled circumstances begin to unfold between Steven and Wouter as his diary and the Journal develop. The need for personal interpretation is essential and the connections are somewhat hidden and require an inquisitive mind.
Strange Objects by Gary Crew is Historical Fiction, which demands continuous concentration right through to the end, with a personal interpretation and perception of the underlying meaning a necessity. One of the outstanding features of this novel is Gary's descriptive writing ability; whether revealing objects or the settings, his clever use of language allows you to `jump' into every incident.
