Frustrating
There were parts of the book that were dead on with descriptions, feelings, reactions. This author knows about the role of the spousal abused.
I could not wrap my head around, however, that Tess (the abused) would choose so many blatantly stupid ways of doing things, while on the run. A 'Jimmy' vehicle, easily spotted. A cell phone, easily traced. Her own self, no disguises until she finally thinks she should wear a hat and sunglasses. Choosing to saunter right into a store, gas station, motel. Going to the bathroom after just tipping off others in the store to what she carried. Making a phone call to a friend, collect. (just to name a few) Tess spent 15 years with an abuser and she knew how powerful, rich and resourceful and deadly he was. She told her friend, Justin, many awful things and he went right along with making these crazy choices. Even the thug, Morelli, made choices that did not take into account how ruthless his boss (Tess's abuser) was.
Frustration was the defining emotion for me for this book and it's one of the few I wish I would not have wasted my time with.
A Strong Four
I found this book to be different from the books I normally read. I like suspense, but the issue of abuse added another dimension here. Tess Sinclair runs from her abusive boyfriend, Randall, with whom she's lived for almost 13 years, although she knows she has little chance of escaping his powerful reach. But, when she discovers he had a man killed, and he confesses to also killing Tess's sister, she can't take him and his abuse any longer.
She has a flat tire in the pouring rain, and a man comes up and offers to help. She can't get the lugs off, so she eventually lets him. As she starts off, she notices her helper is hitchhiking, so she offers him a ride. Justin saves her from one of Randall's henchmen, and she tells him some of what is happening. This begins a fast paced run where one thing happens after another. It is also the start of a beautiful love story, where Tess learns how amazing real love can be.
There are several scenes of explicit lovemaking, but this is the first book I've read in years where this was important to the story. I'd prefer less of it, but Tess needed to see relationships did not have to hurt, and she needed to have her self-concept rebuild. Although I still don't approve of pre-marital sex, it fit into this story better than most.
I did find a few errors. Several times the speaker would change without a new paragraph. Tess should have had a bruised face after Randall hit her and knocked her down the previous night, but Justin only saw how smooth her skin was and how pretty she appeared. When Tess was trying to leave Justin to keep him safe, I couldn't see why she wouldn't have locked her car doors.
