A Tale with a Solution for Terrorism

Very impressed with Ing's clever solution to the crisis of international terrorism, although to make it would result in the kind of sacrifice he brings forward in this novel. It is not a recent novel but is relevant because the crisis remains with us as does the problem his solution targets. Excellent novel you'll burn through.

Well-written story on ignored but very possible topic

I was pleased to see Dean's 1980 story, "Soft Targets", re-released. Dean's a family friend and autographs upon request all of his books we buy. Anybody who knows Dean can close their eyes and hear him talk through all of his books. Soft Targets addresses an entirely plausible issue whose nonoccurrence is taken for granted by the American public - terrorists loose in our own country, waging a religious war in the name of their leader. Hakim Arif stars as the leader of the Arab-backed El-Fatah band of terrorists who have in their group a Panamanian and - surprise - two Israeli members of a religious sect whose beliefs are so convoluted as to ally them with their own enemy. Maurice Everett is the FCC Chairman whose idea to have the country's major TV networks ridicule terrorists versus giving them the publicity they and their backers so crave, puts him and the co-creators of the idea at the top of El-Fatah's hit list. The two men match wits and cross each other's trails through several confrontations running the full gamut of terrorist activity and although Hakim's band succeeds in kidnapping a member of Everett's coterie of television co-conspirators - and scooping up Everett in his new identity through pure bad luck when the plan to fake his death backfired - Everett wins through, saving his fellow hostage after the terrorists have a falling out amongst themselves. Dean crafts his stories with technical excellence, fully accurate geographic detail, trademark colloquialisms and word usage, and draws on his experience as an ex-Air Force crew chief and small-car buff to put together yet another story that will draw you through from beginning to end. It's a great story. Those of you who have read other books by Dean may have noticed a common thread amongst his leading characters: a gruff, burly, worldly-wise and competent tough guy of mature years who nevertheless has his sensitive side.

This is not an Appleby book, and it suffers from a vacuum of intelligence. Petticate, the protagonist, is a cartoon Englishman, without charm or wit; his wife and the society in their circle are all almost belligerently stupid. Petticate's predicament starts out promisingly but it's just not a pleasant place to stay for a long visit.

Holy Mother of Pearl

This was a great read. No if's, and's or but's about it. Ms. Mosiman can tell a story that will have you reading and flipping pages so fast that you can barely catch your breath. She can also create characters so real you can feel their emotions - which is what you will do with young Molly. The more you read, the more you are right there with her, feeling the emotional and physical horrors that Cruise forces her to endure.

The storytelling is wickedly wonderful and I guarantee that the next road trip you take you will wonder about who the people really are in the cars and trucks that pass you by on the highway.

Bravo!

Dark and gripping...

This book kept me reading even when I didn't really want to know what was going to happen next.

I liked the way the author provided the various points of view without giving too much away. Each person's emotions came through loud and clear without being overstated.

The small insights into Cruise's history and actions are horrifyingly poignant. While abhorring his actions, I found myself almost feeling bad for how he became the person we read about on the road with Molly.

The finish was as untidy as the rest of the journey.

Disturbing, but well worth the read.

Disappointed with spoilers

This book started out really good with the "spirit", Facebook, searching Mother, murderer, etc. It had a lot going for it and the writing was very, very good. I couldn't wait to read more. Then, the spirit left, the mother we don't know what happened to her and the finality of her search, this weird "Star" character that I just couldn't get into, and Oh yeah the murderer was now supposed to be a heroine? I didn't care how confused and screwed up this Janet/Jimmie character was I had no compassion for her, she was a cold-blooded killer. I think the author has great potential and could do much better. Overall the book was a huge disappointment. Won't read another from this author.

Not a proper title...

The story was good, the characters were interesting and I liked the poetic justice at the end. However, I have no idea why the author used this title unless it was just to drum up sales by keeping current. Except for a very little bit of this dealt with Facebook. I guess the initial brothers entry is how death was brought about by Facebook. No matter what it was worth the time I spent reading it and it was a fairly quick read.

On the Internet, nobody knows you're dead

I had several problems with this book, but I think I can sum them all up; the book lacks a coherent plot line. It kind of jerks around like a handheld video of a really exotic vacation that you glimpse only briefly between shots of the ground or the videographer's shoes. The author introduces some characters (like Jimmie's sergeant), only to abandon them, and flings Janet about - from lover to murderer to drunkard to fugitive to friend back to fugitive to lunatic suicide victim pulling a "Thelma-and-Louise" into the vocano crater - with no clear picture of her; no backstory to inform her motivations. Jimmie's mom makes the trip to Hawaii to hunt for him, but it's never clear whether or not she ever got any answers to if he was dead, what happened to him; nothing. Even her story is jumbled up with a rekindled romance that seems to spring to life with no frame of reference. Aaugh! There is too much to say, and I really don't want to be so terribly negative. I think I am upset with this book because I believe, based on hints I saw throughout the book, that this author could have done so much better.

Good, just not what I expected

I thought it was about how Facebook affected the lives of the characters in the story, but the title was a bit misleading. Plus, I had a difficult time enjoying the story.

A good start, but in the end, too much story for one book.

To me, the writer tried to do too much.

A good story but a bit too gory.

Unlike previos novels by Chris Ewan, Safe House is far from funny, even though it does have its lighter moments. A few scenes are quite brutal and, for my taste, way too explicit.

Simon Vance is, as usual, excellent.

So, back to The Good Thief's books....

Really enjoyed. Excellent 1st audiobook experience

This is my 1st audiobook and it's been excellent. The story is gripping and well written. It takes a while to get into the narrator doing all the different characters voices but after the first few chapters it adds to it I think :)

I'd never heard of Chris Ewan but I loved this

A really good story, I almost missed my stop on the bus one day because I was so engrossed in the story!

A good read (or listen!)

I listened to this book on Audible having checked out a list of popular audiobooks and this came near the top. It is a good book to listen to with plenty of action. The narrator has a good voice and delivery and helps to bring the story to life. As is the case with these sort of stories perhaps the plot is a bit far fetched, however if stories weren't a bit far fetched they would be fairly dull, so I think that this is acceptable. Chris Ewan manages to keep the story moving along at a good pace and you never believe that he is padding things out or has lost his way.

I won't detail the story line, I am sure that others will do that!

However I would recommend giving this story a chance.

Excellent story, plenty of twists.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Interesting characters, some clever & some downright evil ! Lots of twists. My favourite narrator too.

I would make the protagonist a little smarter and less buffeted by events and people around her, she has the foreseeability of a chicken trying to cross a six lane highway.

Most of the story was not too interesting.

Patience Tomlinson can make even a character without a frontal lobe interesting.

I didn't like the protagonist, nor her son, nor her ex-husband. The most interesting of the characters were the two kids who were living with her, and if I had not purchased another of this series, before I heard this one, I would not purchase another.
