Mark owns whiskywhiskywhisky.com a wonderful forum for malt heads. He has also opened up his own shop The Good Spirits Co, Bath St, Glasgow... and he help found Glasgow's Whisky festival.

Today we ask him about all of that and get him to drink some Talisker (Friends of the Classic Malts Bottling)

About Glasgow's Whisky Festival

The event aims to put Glasgow back on the whisky map with an emphasis on Glasgow’s closest distilleries and the independent bottlers that belong to this great city. But it’s not just about Glasgow, as we’ll be celebrating whisky from all of Scotland and the rest of the world.

The event is being co-organised by Mark Connelly, founder of WhiskyWhiskyWhisky and Bill Mackintosh, Chairman of Glasgow’s Whisky Club in conjunction with Glasgow’s Whisky Club. Both have become frustrated at what Scotland's largest city has to offer the whisky enthusiast and feel that our national drink deserves to be given a bigger stage.

Members of the club will be on hand on the day to answer questions and help out where possible. We will also have club member and YouTube star Ralfy at the festival to capture the atmosphere and record interviews in his unique style. Bunnets at the ready!

BIG PEAT - "Vatted" Islay Malt

But what exactly, you may ask, is a Vatted Malt? It is what the Scotch Whisky industry has traditionally called “a marriage of Malts”. Such vattings often form the heart and soul of a blended scotch whisky (which carries the lighter tasting grain whisky , to soften matters).

 

This vatting carries a big peaty (often called “phenolic”), beachy oceanic slightly ashy selection of Malts from the island of Islay, from where the Laing family hail - and no wonder! - as we have included Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Port Ellen in the "recipe". Ally these lusty and robust Malts selected for BIG PEAT with the fact that no chill filtration takes place – a more old fashioned traditional approach – and you will detect a massive amplification of the anticipated sea-faring qualities on the nose, palate, and finish. These are particularly appreciated when consumed leisurely in the same style these Malts have waited for you in the cold, dark and windswept warehouses of Islay.

Today beatboxer extraordinaire Shlomo gets to sample a very rare and exquiste Glenfiddich Eau de Robidou.

A Guinness World Record Holder & World Loopstation Champion, Shlomo has headlined at major festivals across the globe including Glastonbury and he has appeared on BBC 2’s Later with Jools Holland and BBC 1’s Jonathon Ross Show.

Created in small oval casks as part of Glenfiddich’s Artist in Residence project by Stephanie Bourne, sadly the Scotch Whisky Association will not allow this wonderful spirit to be classed as a whisky. The casks were designed to be small and different in shape to help accelerate the maturation process by increasing the wood surface area ratio to the liquid inside the cask.

Six years later it tastes and smells fantastic. It might technically not be a whisky, not to worry... we can still enjoy it. However let’s call it a Man-fume.

Glenfiddich takes it water from the Robbie Dhu spring... hence the name Eau de Robidou.
