I had just finished picking up a vintage black merino wool cardigan sweater when I noticed a man parked in his wagon-style vehicle with a small trailer attached. He was lying down, reading, and after a bit of curiosity got the better of me, I struck up a conversation.His name is Michael, and when I asked if he’d be open to an immediate interview, he said ‘yes.’ What followed was a raw, candid conversation about his struggles with addiction and the work he does with the homeless. Michael didn’t want to share too many personal details, wishing only to be remembered as ‘Michael.’ But what he did share was powerful, and I think you’ll find it just as compelling as I did.Though my microphone failed during the recording, thanks to Michael Winter (a different Michael), we managed to restore the audio, and I’m grateful for that. The weight of these experiences is something I continue to reflect on and try to make sense of.For many veterans, myself included, the battles don’t end when we come home. This episode is a re-do, a continuation of the conversation, exploring how my choices to join and the consequences of war left scars I never anticipated.
