We hear it all the time, "Hunting, is not what I do, but who I am." In my case however, it's both what I do and who I am. It's a fortunate opportunity I've been blessed with for the past 24 years.

I think we all dream of making a career out of something we love to do, and luckily for me I have definitely been able to make that dream come true.

As a youngster, I was introduced to hunting by my father.

We spent much of our time in our home state of Colorado chasing green heads and Canadian honkers (my father's real passion).

However, it was the once a year deer and elk hunting trip that I spent many sleepless nights thinking about. Although my father is since long gone now, the memories of my first spike muley, and him by my side at age 14 - will never be forgotten.

my life's direction changed forever

After high school I was offered a chance to guide deer and elk hunters close to home, and my life's direction changed forever. I continued school but only during the spring and summer sessions as fall was reserved for guiding hunters.

By my early 20's I was operating my own outfitting company and all thoughts of law school were long forgotten. For years I specialized in outfitting and guiding trophy Whitetail and Mule deer hunts on the Plains of eastern Colorado, along with some elk hunts in Colorado and New Mexico as well.

I lost count long ago of the many great bucks we've taken over the years, but there's no doubt that the Plains have been good to me. It's a passion I still have today as I continue to guide regularly throughout eastern Colorado and elsewhere!

Trophy Whitetail Secrets Joe Pacconi

Welcome to another episode of Whitetail Rendezvous. We're heading off to Ohio and we're going to connect with Pacconi's Trophy Whitetails of Southern Ohio. Joe, welcome to the show. 

Thank you, Bruce. It's a pleasure to be on the show and to talk about deer hunting with you.

It's always a pleasure. Let's start right out and tell us something about your hunting tradition. You've really delved in hard for hunting mature bucks. How did you get started in that?

It started when I was a kid in Pennsylvania. My entire family were hunters in PA; my dad and my grandfathers. In Pennsylvania, hunting deer, we even have the first day of deer season off of school. It's a pretty big thing there. It started there with me always seeing deer because we lived in an area where deer were heavily populated and some decent bucks. Nothing like what we hunt in Ohio now but that's where it all started for me. I just developed a love for always seeing whitetail deer in the wild and being out in the woods with my family members, my grandfathers, my dad, my uncles and all the traditions that we developed, going to the store at lunch time for pie when they're doing deer drives. Things like that are just memories that will be with me forever. Hunting deer with my family, it's just continued on into now that I'm an outfitter.

What are some of the early lessons that you learned that you're passing along to your kids, your family members or your guests at your outfit there?

Normally, first of all, we go through the basics: how to set a stand, how to scout for the deer and looking for rubs and scrapes. Trying to figure out if we're going to hunt on food plots early season. Late season, we hunt where the does are, obviously when they're rutting. In January, when it gets cold and the bucks run down looking for food, we'd try to hunt on the food sources and bring them in whenever they're run down and they let their guard down a little bit. That's the kind of stuff we teach everybody, even my kids. Why we harness a specific area at certain times a year as opposed to later in the year where we might be in a different spot, the little clues that bucks leave in the woods to where we can maybe pinpoint and get a line on them to set a stand.

Did you learn that from your uncles and early days in PA or is that something that you just matured into yourself? 

They weren't quite as serious as that because they were more gun hunters in PA but that's where it all started for me, the love of the outdoors with those guys. It developed for me into more trophy deer hunting instead of just getting a buck. It developed into learning how to kill these pook deer. That's basically where it's gotten to for me right now.

I think it's interesting that you talked about pook deer and I like to talk about mature deer. In your mind, let's take a look at both things. I think what you're saying is when you look at pook deer whitetail, that's 180, right?

Well I'm just excited about your new book. In the warm up, we were talking about you got a new book coming out just in time for Christmas so let's jump right into it. Let's talk about one the name of the book, where they're gonna be able to get it and why you wrote the book.

From Soil to Success

John: Yeah, the book is called From Soil to Success. I've been doing nutrition and agronomy in the seed industry for over 25 years and I'm all about education. I've always been focused on consulting and so the book I wrote to give people a different look at nutrition. So I say I'm a nutritious person foremost but yet I wrote a book on soil. And we'll get into that a little bit, and the book I'm looking to have released before Christmas.

I do have dealers around the U.S. and I am looking to set up more dealers so each dealer will have my book and also my website which is www.grandparayoutdoorscom in the cart there in the area where I have my food plot seed, minerals, and other products you will be able to purchase the book through there and it might be a great Christmas gift for your family, a husband, wife, kids, friends and my theme, which is educating the public.

Bruce: Now talk about the chapters, how is it laid out?

John: Okay, so it's going to be more like a guidebook, and what we're gonna do is we'll give people a little bit of a look into my background, we'll be looking at a lot of the different forages so we will have a section discussing a lot of different common and less common forages.

We're not gonna make this a super technical guidebook where you need to be a rocket scientist to understand where I'm going with it but we will discuss the different basic nutrients. Everything from the majors, the nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, to the overlooked sulfur.

And also the micronutrients and that's where my focus has been even not just with the dry products but also liquids and the foliers. We will be covering every nutrient and showing some different pictures on soils, and also how pH affects your plant growth and fertilizer uptake and so it should be a real...

Robert "Moose" Gendron - How to love deer hunting & enjoy nature at its best

Bruce: Do you call deer or do you vocalize with them at all?

Robert: I do a little bit, mostly during the rut. That's pretty much the only time I really vocalize a little bit with them. There's nothing like calling one in and hearing the buck grunt back at you. Seeing them is even better. Normally, when you're just in the stand by yourself for a few hours and you hear one of them, it just definitely gives me goosebumps.

Bruce: Sure gets my blood going. That's for darn sure. How do you get into your stand in the morning? Talk to us from the time you leave your truck or ATV, how do you stalk your stand so you can have a good opportunity not to bust a buck going in?

Robert: Normally, I take my four-wheeler so get on there, get on my buddy's property or wherever I'm hunting. Normally, I'll spray before I even go out, before I leave my house. Once I get there, again, I'll spray again just to make sure I get a good scent cover-up going. Depending on the sky, if there's a lot of clouds or not, if it's really dark, normally, I'll use a little red light to try to get to my stand. But I try to do it in the dark as much as possible. I just take my time. I take my time. That's the main thing. You don't want to make too much noise. You don't try to make anything move that you wouldn't want to disturb. It's kind of hard though because climbing up to my stand is a little noisy once in a while. I've spooked them before but they end up coming back a little later. It's not guaranteed that you won't see anything even if you make a lot of noise, I believe.

Bruce: Do you like to rifle hunt or archery hunt?

Robert: Archery right away. Deer in the heart. The straight cartridge hunt, rifle-wise, but I love to bow hunt. It's more of a challenge. I just love the more of the primitive side of it all. Bow is definitely my first choice.

Bruce: Tell us about the type of gear you use, your bow, the type of arrows, and the broad heads.

I'm really, really enjoying that bow.

Robert: I was using a Mathews but I just upgraded a Mathews that's just a few years old and decide to go out with a Bear Arena 30. There just seems...to me, that the ticket, to me....for some people, everybody's different. I really love that. I'm also using Black Eagle arrows, which is one of our great sponsors. For me, it's the straightest flying arrow that I've used yet. I am not complaining about those arrows at all. For broad heads, I'm using the Xecutioners, another one of our sponsors. This year is actually my first time using them and I've had great results. Other than that, I'm using Trophy Ridge for the sights. Everything...so far, I've put that bow together three or four months ago and it's right on the money. I'm really, really enjoying that bow.

So everybody in the neighborhood, with us growing up in the ghetto of Baltimore, that's how I got the name Camo Thug. Basically because, if they're saying, "Here comes Robbie, here comes the Camo Thug", all because I wore camouflage clothes and I did a lot of deer hunting. : Well, you're gonna get a kick out of this story, too. Last year, my mother and daughter, like I said, she's my little hunting partner and I used to go hunting a lot and she knows… I used to do a lot of different, like, I tried every attractant on the market. So, I know, I used to take a lot of corn down in my spot. And I have a spot down in Maryland I hunt. So she goes, "Daddy, I got some stuff I didn't eat. I want to take that and put it out and let's put one of your cameras on it." Robbie Knickman produces the Mix

So we took it down to my hunting spot, we put a camera on it. And I seen the reaction, the way the deer hit it. Which it kind of amazed me, how they were just tearing it up, because basically what I did was I her pile next to a pile of corn. Well my video camera, which you can see some pictures on my Facebook page, you're gonna see where the deer are nailing what she put out compared to the corn. They did not touch the corn until everything in that pile that she put out was gone. Robbie Knickman produces the Mix

So, I saw the feedback and I said, "Well, let me try something." So all of 2014, I played with a lot of different formulas. And it’s like I tell people, The Mix is not your ordinary deer attractant. Basically, when you see it, you'll be like, oh my God, are you serious? Because a little seven year old came up with the idea of it. I mean, it was just amazing how the deer react.

I mean, the first two weeks in there I had to patent it, because I mean, it's simple when people see the ingredients, but the way the deer hit it. It's like, because it's like, once the deer hit it, like I have one guy, one of Davis guys in West Virginia. You know, Glenn used it, and he said deer were actually coming back to the spot, digging, looking for it, and digging a hole. Then, my friend Billy Neeble in North Carolina put it out. He put two bags out; the deer killed it. It was gone.

Kip Adams QDMA Bruce: what's happening over at QDMA these days? Kip: Well, we're having a good year. Membership continues to grow which is a great sign, that means that hunters want to continue to learn more about deer and enhancing habitat, how to be a better hunter, so I've got some new educational programs and lots of things for youth hunters and overall life is good.

Bruce: Well that's great and what things are you focused on personally, yourself in the education? Because people email me all the time or text me and say, "Bruce, can I find out about this, can I find out about that?" And I use you guys as a resource because I think, bar none, you probably have the best data, best information in the whitetail world. Kip: Well I certainly appreciate that compliment regarding our educational materials, and the newest things that we have, we always put out our Annual Whitetail Report which provides information for hunters and that's a hunter's favorite. But the newest thing, and I'm real excited about this, is a hunter book. Kip Adams QDMA

You can buy a book on to really help you do just about anything in the world. Build computers, I think brain surgery, anything else, but there's not a really good book that really explains hunting and how to get involved, what to do, how to start, and all that. So we partner with Kalkomey, who's the largest provider of online hunter education classes in the U.S. They have 300,000 people that sign up for that every year, but about 100,000 of 'em drop out. So Kalkomey said, "Hey, the biggest thing that the hunters want is a true book on how do do this." And there's not a good one available. Kip Adams QDMA

So that's gonna come out a little bit later this year and I am super excited for it. I got to write a few of the chapters and I got to review all of the book, so it is going to be a tremendous resource for hunters whether you're just starting or you've been hunting for decades. This is one of the neatest trends that's going on right now and across the whitetail's range. It's something that hunters should be super proud of. The data that we presented this year in our 2016 whitetail report, we always look at state by state harvest with regard to numbers of bucks and does, age structure of that. And that harvest actually was from the 2014 season. And the reason for that Bruce is, unfortunately, there's a few states right now that don't have all of the data analyzed from this past deer season. So the most recent season where everything is complete, analyzed and able to look at, showed that in that year for the first time in the history of deer management in the U.S.

Well I host Guide to the Outdoors. With L.L. Bean the size that it's become we're known more for clothing, apparel, travel gear, and such. And as you've already heard, I'm quite passionate, maybe on the border of sick and twisted, about hunting and fishing and the outdoors. So, years back I decided we really needed to let people know what our heritage is, where we belong, and what we're all about. I petitioned a meeting with our CEO at the time. I said, "This is what I'd like to do. I want to start a show that takes us back to the roots of who L.L. Bean is and it shows the truer side of it." And now, with that show, it allows me to open my world, which hopefully is to a lot of people the world of hunting and fishing, the outdoors.
